متن انگلیسی درس

The time for talking is over! It’s time to push buttons.

Your flying eggs are pretty impressive, Mr. Eggman, but let’s face it, you’ll never catch me.

Confidence, a fool’s substitute for intelligence.

That’s not good.

Sonic, I know you got the super speed and everything, but Maddie and I– Totally defenseless, probably gonna get blown up.

Pretty much, yeah.

Don’t worry, I know exactly what to do.

I was not expecting that. But I was expecting not to expect something, so it doesn’t count.

The time for talking is over! It’s time to push buttons.

There are so many expressions with the word time. This is one of them.

To announce that an activity will begin we could say “it’s time for—”,

For example: It’s time for dinner!

Okay, time for bed. I’m gonna go brush my teeth.

But, as used here, it means that someone should do something.

The collocations that we usually use is “it’s time for (someone) to do (something).”

It’s time for you to buy a new car, man.

You buy a new car!

I bought a new car.

To say that a certain activity should end, or that the opportunity to do something has passed, we might say what Dr. Robotnik says:

“the time for – is over.”

Example: The time for submitting job applications is over.

He says “it’s time to push buttons”.

He means it literally but he may also mean the figurative expression.

As idiom, to push someone’s buttons means to annoy them.

I didn’t mean to be so out there, but I am furious with him.

Wow, um—

Calm down?

I’m trying, but, man, that guy can push my buttons.

Why are you so mad at him?

Look, I don’t wanna talk about it, okay?

Well, it seems like—

You wanna be on my list, too? Keep talking.

Your flying eggs are pretty impressive, Mr. Eggman, but let’s face it, you’ll never catch me.

This is something we say before saying something that is unpleasant but true.

Three’s been cash coming in?

Have you been holding out on me?

No. No, I’ve been investing it.

Let’s face it. I’m better with money than you are.

Better at spending it.

Now it’s time for a grammar quiz!

Sonic says, “You’ll never catch me.”

Why do you think he refers to the future by using WILL and not the other two forms to talk about the future:

Going to: “You’re never going to catch me” or present cotunnite: “You’re never catching me”

you’ll never catch me.

Confidence, a fool’s substitute for intelligence.

Here are your options. When he says this, he’s—

When you’re sure about something, you make a prediction with will.

Example: you’ll love New York City!

If you find the difference between these three ways to talk about the future confusing, be sure to check out this video.

Now, Sonic is sure Dr. Robotnik won’t catch him because he’s incredibly fast.

talking about confidence—

you’ll never catch me.

Confidence, a fool’s substitute for intelligence.

that’s an interesting saying he just invented.

A fool is a person who lacks good sense or judgment. A stupid or silly person.

We say many different things as “it’s a fool’s something.”

what we mean when we say this is that something is absurd, pointless, useless.

Let’s watch some examples: is there any hope, Gandalf, for Frodo and Sam?

There never was much hope.

Just a fool’s hope.

It’s not over.

There’s still a fight to be had.

We’ve an armada against us, and with the Dutchman, there’s no chance.

There’s only a fool’s chance.

I’ll try to keep you alive, for her sake. A fool’s task, admittedly, but I’ve never been able to refuse your wife anything. I won’t forget this. You’re a true friend.

Sonic, I know you got the super speed and everything, but Maddie and I– Totally defenseless, probably gonna get blown up. we sometimes say and everything at the end of an idea as a way of saying electera or after we’ve mentioned a good aspect about something or someone.

Example, he’s a great candidate for the job and everything, but he can only work part-time.

it also means that something is complete, as seen in this funny example: all right, well, tell him Amy called. Last name?

he knows my last name, I’m his girlfriend. We have a contract that everything. I’ll send you a pdf.

And then, very often, as in these examples, we introduced a different idea or opinion. I really appreciate your offer to let me move in and everything but— don’t you think it’s going to be weird?

that’s great and everything, but actually– we have an appointment tomorrow at Billingsley.

totally defenseless, probably going to get blown up. Let’s first look at how these two adverbs change in fast speech. totally become [tuh-duh-lee] probably reduces to [pro-bly]

after this, going to get sounds more like gonna get

going to get blown up it turns into gonna get blow-nup

let’s hear it one more time and then you’ll have the chance to repeat it.

totally defenseless, probably going to get blown up.

totally defenseless, probably going to get blown up.

here’s another sentence for you to practice your pronunciation.

how would you say that this: this is how sonic says it:

don’t worry, I know exactly what to do. In most cases, when said in a natural way, we don’t articulate this T.

This is: don’t worry

don’t worry, guys, I will do everything.

don’t worry. I had a backup plan.

This is a tricky word. the x in this word sounds like a g + z. exactly

you probably say it as a k + s.

this is true for other words. Taxi is pronounced with a “ks”, but example is pronounced with a “gz”. Also note that he emphasizes exactly.

don’t worry, I know exactly what to do.

It’s 867 Clinton street, apartment 2A. I know exactly where that bastard is.

this is a success story. tell me exactly what happened. altogether it is: don’t worry, I know exactly what to do.

don’t worry, I know exactly what to do.

I was not expecting that. But I was expecting not to expect something, so it doesn’t count.

if you say that something counts, you mean that it is important or valuable. Example: it doesn’t matter what you’ve said; what counts is how you act.

so as he says here, “it doesn’t count” he means that it doesn’t matter.

Joey, what are you doing? You promised Phoebe no meat till she has the babies.

Well, I figured we’re in another country, so it doesn’t count.

That’s true.

The man’s got a point.

When I got the call to do Sonic, It was really exciting.

Good morning my rural chump

Mr.—

Dr. Robotnik

he is a madman. I can’t with that guy. You’re mine hedgehog. That was an illegal left by the way. of course he’s a 300 IQ so it took me a week and a half to prepare. Robotnik wants to control humanity with his machines.

Sonic is a power that he needs to control the world.

Is that all you got!

No but thank you for asking. Oh-oh–that’s not good. I just thought you might like a latte with steamed Austrian goal milk. of course I what a latte.

I love the way you make them.

I think I’m kind of right in a zeitgeist guys with this character.

Give me a big, fat break! the moustache was ridiculous. I wish I could grow it. being able to do a movie that brings a good memory back, and connects with new generations of people, it was really amazing.

I’ve been very lucky in that regard. Nailed it!

I’m just having so much fun. we’ve created a monster we won’t be able to control. Mr.—

Dr. Robotnik

he is a madman.

which of these groups do you think are closer in meaning to madman?

I can’t with that guy. You’re mine hedgehog. That was an illegal left by the way. Sonic uses an interesting expression here. In this context, he means that he had a hard time dealing with Dr. Robotnik, probably because he’s persistent or too much of a nuisance

this is a bit similar to when we say “you’re too much”, which can mean: you are too much of a problem for me” or “you are just too funny, clever, entertaining, etc.”

we’ve covered this expression in our hilarious lesson “Joey’s Punching Girlfriend.”

Hey. Hey, cute jacket.

Oh, thanks.

That’s so sweet.

Whoa. Ow.

Oh, “Ow”

Did Joe tell you to say that?

You guys are too much.

you know what? I gotta tell you—

I think you’re the one that is too much. Joey has the nicest friends.

and the nicest girlfriend. you’re so sweet.

Then he says “that was an illegal left”. he’s saying this because he turned to the left into a street that has transit going from left to right, which is funny because Sonic is not a car.

Robotnik wants to control humanity with his machines. A sound a lot of learners fail to articulate correctly is the “L” when it’s in the final position of a word. when you pronounce it, make sure the tip of your tongue doesn’t touch the roof of your mouth.

It’s control, not controL

This is– humanity with his machines. in this case, ‘ch’ sounds like “sh”. is not machine, it’s machine. let’s listen and repeat. Robotnik wants to control humanity with his machines. is that all you got! no but thank you for asking. in action and superhero movies, you might often here “Is that all you got?” or some other similar expressions.

this means “is that all you can do?”

Robotnik’s reply, “thank you for asking”, is funny because it doesn’t fit in the context of a combat. we say this, or “thanks for asking” after someone asks a question that shows they care about us.

how are you really?

I’m on a better path. It’s a journey. thank you for asking, Manny. And thank you for your letters. Okay, you have to understand something. we’re in a hospital right now.

Why? Is Leonard okay? Leonard’s fine. I’m fine, thanks for asking, by the way.

I think I’m kind of right in a zeitgeist guys with this character. Give me a big, fat break!

zeitgeist refers to the defining spirit or mood of a certain point in history, as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.

for example, you could say that the cafe culture of Buenos Aires has a zeitgeist of 19th century Paris. what Carrey probably mean is that playing this character made him feel like he was back in a the 1990s again (when the original Sonic the Hedgehog game first was released).

Give me a break is a common expression used for showing that you are annoyed by something someone has said or done, or that you do not think that what they have said is true.

You know, it’s been really nice hanging out with Jax because he likes to talk about his feeling. Give me a break, Jess. is that really what you want– a man who talks about his feelings all the time?

he says big and fat here to make the phrase sound extra emphatic.

I was gonna smoke the marijuana like a cigarette. now you’re looking at nice big, fat punishment. The mustache was ridiculous. I wish I could grow it

in this case ridiculous is used to mean crazy, that is in a bad way, or crazy in a funny way. you can tell which by the tone, for example: that roller coaster was ridiculous. I’m never doing that again.

that roller coaster was ridiculous! we’ve got to go on it again. being able to do a movie that brings a good memory back, and connects generations of people, it was really amazing.

I’ve been very lucky in that regard.

to bring back means to cause ideas, feelings, or memories to be in your mind again. bringing memories back is a common collocation.

in that regard here means in connection with the point previously mentioned. so Jim Carrey is just saying that he’s lucky that he’s been called to work in a movie that brings back good memories.

Nailed it!

To nail something means to do something really well. we say it as for example: you’re going to nail your exam.

Sometimes we just say “nailed it!” after we’ve done something really well, like in these examples: oh! Look at this one. Wow! You nailed it. We did it! Hey, that was incredible! That was amazing! I mean, we totally nailed it! It was beautiful!
