Awesome ! Ethan, thanks so much. I’m super excited to be here and talk a little bit about words that reduce in English. When words reduce it means their pronunciation changes in conversation, in connected speech from what you would expect based on the written word, so for example ‘to’ becomes ‘tuh’. ‘fur’ becomes ‘fuhr’. ‘want’ to becomes ‘wanna’.

These reductions happen all the time to the smaller words that are unstressed or not emphasized in a sentence.

Native speakers use reductions constantly and it can often make them difficult to understand.

Knowing about and understanding common reductions can help immensely in your listening comprehension and if you want to learn more about the most common words and word pairs that reduce, definitely check out these lessons on the Clear English Corner.

We’ll share links for you in the video description. In this lesson– we’re talking about 7 super common word pairs that reduce with examples from the popular TV series friends.

So let’s dive right in with our first example.

Two small words you’ll often see together are has and to, like: She has to leave. But instead of clearly and distinctly hearing has and to a lot of times what you’ll hear is hasta.

So she has to leave becomes she has to leave. she has to leave. he has to decide. becomes he has to decide. he has to decide.

here’s a few more examples of hasta from friends. This night has to go. This night has to go just perfect, you know.

It only has to happen once.

It has to be an injection.

My brother the PhD would like to know if there’s any way to treat this orally. No. Under these circumstances it has to be an injection and it has to be now.

Another common word pair is got to.

Got to becomes gotta. now notice that the t’s at the end of God and the beginning of two combined together but instead of gotta . you here gotta. the sound becomes more of a D gotta, this is called the flap T in American English this flap T or quick D sound happens when the T comes between two vowel sounds.

as in the words water and better and also the combination gotta , so we’ve got to go becomes we’ve got to go. we’ve got to go. I’ve got a lot to do becomes I’ve godda lot to do. I’ve godda lot to do.

Here’s a few more examples of godda.

Come on! you’re going out with the guy there’s godda be something wrong with him.

I’ve godda smoke.

I’ve godda have the smoke.

Oh I’ve gotta smoke I’ve gotta head the Smoke.

If you never smoke again I’ll give you $7,000.

yeah , all right .

you godda do it man.

out of becomes oudda. notice again those t’s become a flap T or quick D oudda.

so instead of we are out of time you might hear we’re outta time we’re outta time .

he’s out of the office. will most likely become he’s oudda the office. he’s oudda the office .

Now this one I find particularly funny the words front of.

front of a lot of times will turn into Frunna, frunna.

so in front of everyone may sound like in frunna everyone.

I’ll meet you in front of the theatre. can turn into I’ll meet you in frunna the theatre.

I’ll meet you in frunna the theatre.

Here are a couple more examples of frunna

Monica, I started my day by pinging in frunna 25 other women.

in fruuna 25 other women and you’re worried about who’s gonna take you to the Big Apple Circus?

This is me in the sound of music. You see the Von Trapp kids? No. That’s because I’m in frunna them.

yeah I thought that was an ALP. After dinner me, her and pepper all fell asleep in frunna the fire.

Well I woke up in the middle of the night and I saw that the fire was dying out. So, I picked up a log and threw it on. Or at least what I thought was a log.

Oh my god! you threw pepper on the fire!

Isn’t it interesting how the pronunciation of these words changes in connected speech.

now you might have noticed another common reduction in a couple of these clips . a long with lotta , Ross’s dad , Jack and Chandler also use the reduction– gonna gonna gonna is the common reduction of the words going to going to .when you’re talking about an event that’s going to happen or

something you’re going to do . so instead of I’m going to do this tomorrow you might hear I’m gonna do this tomorrow I’m gonna do this tomorrow
