once upon a time in Hollywood is Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie. it is said to be a masterpiece, the film boasts some of Hollywood’s biggest names

in the town, it can all change like that.

In 1960s Los Angeles, Rick Dalton is fading Television actor who, together with his stunt double, Cliff, embark on a journey to make a name for themselves in the Hollywood film industry. If you’re new here, you will first will watch the clip with subtitles in English, then we will teach you all of the most important vocabulary, pronunciation and cultural context, before moving onto the next clip.

A the title of this movie, it tells us it’s a story set a long time ago, although in the case of Tarantino’s movie, it is probably to add a certain feeling of enchantment.

A stunt is a dangerous and exciting action requiring special skill, performed for artistic purposes usually on television, theatres, or cinema.

A double is a person who looks the same or very similar to someone else. in filmmaking, stunt doubles are trained professionals who replace actors in performing some dangerous video sequences.

You’ve seen my stunts. I can kick. I can punch. I can do horse work, car work

We ask what’s the matter? When we want to know what’s wrong or if there’s a problem.

one of the defining characteristics of the character played by Leonardo Dicaprio in this movie is that he’s an actor who’s been successful in the past but struggles to get roles in the present. He’s, what we would call, a has-been.

That’s to say, someone who was popular in the past, but is not so much so now.

a coach who’s has-been doesn’t coach champions. he just makes more has-beens.

here I am. Flat on my ass. Why do I got living next door to me? by saying he’s flat on his ass, he’s saying he’s broke, or in other words, has no money. this comes from the collocation to be flat broke.

Margot Robbie’s character says that she plays Ms. Carlsson in a movie. If an actor plays a character, it means that they have the role of that character in a movie, series, or play. Example. Jennifer Anniston played Rachel Green in the series Friends.

We say “like that” or “just like that” when we’re talking about something happening fast, unexpectedly, not giving one an opportunity to prepare.

what we see here is a very common reduction, in which we omit the H sound in the pronoun “him”. So, it sounds like ihm. the same happens with the pronouns “he” and “her”. Later in the scene, we also see “them” be reduced to “em”.

all these reductions are very common in everyday speech. In the following clip, instead of: take him fishing and get him on our side we here take-im fishing and get-im on our side

A wardrobe assistant would be someone who helps the actor get dressed.

the word bitch does not mean a prostitute, as many English learners mistakenly believe. Rather, it is usually used to refer to a woman who’s annoying or unpleasant. Calling a woman bitch is offensive and very impolite.

The answer is that there isn’t much of a difference.

Generally, we’d look at the use of help someone out as an alternative of help that carries a more conversational tone.

Ain’t is a very informal and colloquial word that’s used as an alternative to the negative forms of the verb to be (am not, is not, are not), the verb have (have not and has not), and the verb do (do not and does not).

It’s also sometimes used to replace the past forms of those verbs. This word is grammatically incorrect and some people argue that this word is used by people with little education, but depending on the context it can also be used to achieve a colloquial or comedic effect.

Then, Randy talks about his guys sitting around talking to each other on the chance he might use them. To sit around means to spend time sitting down and doing very little, being lazy. Example, we sat around most of the evening, waiting for Jake and drinking beers.

on the chance means “on the possibility that”

example, I came early on the chance that we might have time to chat. to add more emphasis, we can say, on the off chance, meaning that we don’t think it is very probable.

Example, I want to remain friends with her on the off chance that she breaks up with her boyfriend.

Her and if your dudes were better match for me I’d say “oh, okay, you got me.”

Rick is saying that Randy’s stunt performers are not as good a match for him as Cliff is.

A match is something that looks the same as something else. in this case, two people who are a match look alike. As we’ve seen before, a stunt performer needs to look like the actor he or she is doing the stunts for.

So, he’s saying that Brad Pitt’s character looks more like himself than the other stunt men Randy is mentioning. Then he says “if your dudes were a better match for me I’d say “oh, you got me.”

when we say “you got me” we’re admitting that we’re wrong and someone has discovered something we’re hiding or planning.

Actually, in India, the names of constellations are different. Where you have the Big Dipper, we have the Big Curry Pot.

Rick here is describing some of the stunts Cliff is able to do. You can throw him off a building or light him on fire. As an adverb, off often communicates leaving the top of a surface and it can be used together with some verbs, like fall off or jump off.

to light something on fire means to make something be on fire. another way to express this same idea is to set something on fire.

and I don’t dig the vibe he brings on a set.

a vibe is a feeling that you get from a particular person, place or situation. it can be good or bad. if you talk about someone’s vibe, you’re referring to a certain energy that person transmits.

in this case, Randy gets a bad vibe from Cliff.

Hutch, who the hell are these guys?

I don’t know, but I get a good vibe from them.
