So I’m super excited to be bringing you this lesson with Men in Black: International, which is the latest installment in the Men in Black movie franchise.

I’m sure, if you’re watching this, you probably have already seen the wildly popular original Men in Black movies, which star Will Smith.

Well, once again the world needs to be saved from an alien threat and new agents played by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are here to take care of that.

So, we’ll start out by teaching you with the trailer from the new movie.

Then, we’ll watch a scene from the original movie starring Will Smith, before finally learning with an interview with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson talking about the new movie.

The woman, who’s name is agent O, says they’re “recognizable only as déjà-vu, and dismissed just as quickly.”

To dismiss (someone or something) is to decide that they are not important and not worth thinking or talking about.

For example, you might consider an idea, but then dismiss it when you think it’s not practical.

This whole speech has actually been used in the older movies.

You are a rumor, recognizable only as déjà-vu, and dismissed just as quickly.

You don’t exist. You never even born. Men is black is an organization that operates in secret.

They say they’re recognized as a deja-vu because once a person comes in contact with them, their memory is erased -or deleted- with the deneuralyzer.

We are the best-kept secret in the universe.

I know. I want in.

To keep a secret means to not tell anybody about a secret someone shared with you.

Here they phrased this with the superlative adjective best, to say that the fact that the Men in Black exists is a secret that’s better kept than any other secret.

Then, Agent M says “I want in”.

This is what we say when we want to join something, for example, a group or effort.

In this case, she wants to join the Men in Black organization.

We’re flying to London tonight.

Sir?

If you’re going after Schmidt, I want in.

MIB, you Kereliam scum. And FYI, your little club here sucks!

FYI is an acronym that stands for for you information.

We say this when we want someone to know something.

Example: For your information, I won’t be attending the meeting because I’m going to be traveling.

And I looked everywhere, all over the apartment, including the roof.

Which, FYI, Ross, one of your neighbors, growing weed.

Just point to the wire you want me to cut.

Which one’s red?

Oftentimes, when we say this it is because we’re angry about something.

Example: For your information, I already did the job that you failed to do.

Although the acronym originated as a fast way to text message the phrase to someone, now it is also used in spoken English.

This is similar to other texting shortcuts you may know, like, LOL and OMG.

In this clip, Agent H calls the alien creature scum.

Literally, it refers to a layer of dirt or foam that accumulates on top of stagnant water

For example, pond scum.

As slang, this is used to refer to very bad, unpleasant people.

You’re scum! You’re scum!

In the Men in Black movies, they frequently refer to the evil aliens as this.

Prisoners of MIB, the scum of the universe.

Well, now it’s the scum’s turn—

Let’s now take a closer look at the phonetics of these two utterances.

This usually happens when a word ends in T and the next one starts with a vowel, and especially if it’s a function word.

This same instance of reduction and thinking occurs in the phrases, about our date, right after and that is, in the following clips:

Right after I call an ex-girlfriend.

To pledge is to make a formal or official promise that you will do something.

God of mischief – do hereby pledge to you—

In this clip, Pawny is pledging to be loyal to Agent M.

He treats her as a queen and he considers himself her subject.

In this context, a conclusion is what you believe is true after considering all the information that you have.

We can express this idea as an action with the verb to conclusion. However, the phrase to come to a conclusion is more common.

I came to the conclusion that the dog was sick when he didn’t eat his favorite food.

Anyways, I wanted you guys all to know that I’ve been taking a really hard look at things—and come to the conclusion I have to stop kidding myself.

I suck at acting.

A common colocation similar to this one is to jump to conclusions, which means to quickly start to believe something is true when you haven’t taken the time to consider all possibilities.

What will follow is a series of simple tests for motor skills, concentration, stamina.

The word motor here is used in a physiological sense to refer to muscular movements.

You’re motor skills are your abilities to move parts your body in a synchronized manner to achieve a purpose.

Stamina is the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort.

For example: Sprinters have a lot of power.

Marathon runners, on the other hand, have a lot of stamina.

You ride a bike around town.

You must have amazing stamina.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Well, first off, I was gonna pop this guy hanging from the street light, and then I realized, you know, he’s just working out.

And how would I feel if somebody come running in my gym bust me in my ass while I’m on the treadmill?

Then I saw this snarling beast guy.

And I noticed he had a tissue in his hand and realized, you know, he’s not snarling, he’s sneezing.

You know, he ain’t no real threat there.

Then I saw little our Tiffany. I’m thinking, you know, 8-year-old, while girl, middle of the ghetto bunch of monster, this time of night with quantum physics books?

She about to start some shit, Zed.

She’s about 8 years old. Those books are way too advanced for her.

If you ask me, I say she’s up to something.

And to be honest, I’d appreciate it

if you eased up off my back about it.

And to be honest, I’d appreciate it

if you eased up off my back about it.

Generally, we use the imperative phrase get off my back to tell someone in an aggressive way that they should stop bothering us, criticizing us or demanding us to do something in a certain way.

Will’s character here says ease up off my back. On its own, to ease up on something/someone is a phrase verb that means to start doing less of something or to do something with less intensity.

Example: I should ease up on the video games.

When you combine ease up with off my back you get a slightly modified meaning of get off my back.

If you tell someone to get off your back, you’re telling them to stop doing whatever they’re doing that’s bothering you.

If you tell them to ease up off your back, you’re telling them to do a little bit less of that and not necessarily to stop doing it completely.

Well, first off, I was gonna pop this guy hanging from the street light, and then I realized, you know, he’s just working out.

As a verb, to pop has many different informal and even slang meanings.

In this case, Will Smith character is using pop as a synonym of to shoot.

Here are a couple of phrase verbs with pop. To pop in or into a place means to quickly enter place.

Hey, this isn’t the way to work.

I just want to pop in and make sure Ma’s okay.

Last night in bed, I’ll admit it, she popped into my head a couple of times.

And to pop up means to appear.

You will never guess who just popped up on our radar.

And how would I feel if somebody come running in my gym bust me in my ass while I’m on the treadmill?

To bust (someone) in their ass is a very colloquial and vulgar way to say to shoot someone.

A treadmill is a machine with a moving belt that you can run on in a gym.

As you have probably noticed, Will Smith’s character speaks with a lot of urban slang, and he even makes grammatical errors, which native speakers do all the time.

Here he says.

How would I feel if somebody come running in my gym bust me in my ass while I’m on the treadmill?

However, if you know anything about the conditional tense, then you know it should be:

How would I feel if somebody came running in my gym and busted me in my ass while I was on the treadmill?

You can learn a lot more about the correct use of the conditional in this lesson we made.

Then I saw this snarling beast guy.

And I noticed he had a tissue in his hand and realized, you know, he’s not snarling, he’s sneezing.

You know, he ain’t no real threat there.

Snarl is what animals do when they make an intimidating noise while showing their teeth.

You can talk about, for example, a snarling dog, or as he says here, a snarling beast.

Then he observes that the beast is not actually snarling, it’s sneezing.

Then he says “he ain’t no real threat there”.

Ain’t is a very informal and colloquial word that’s used as an alternative to the negative forms of the verb to be (am not, is not, are not), the verb have (have not and has not), and the verb do (do not and does not).

It’s also sometimes used to replace the past forms of those verbs.

This word is grammatically incorrect and some people argue that this word is used by people with little education, but depending on the context it can also be used to achieve a colloquial or comedic effect.

Let’s see some other examples of ain’t.

Look, do you want your money, my man?

First off, I ain’t your man, you asshole.

You remember my driver Elliot?

Elliot, give this man the envelop.

Ain’t you gonna count it?

Nick ain’t got the balls to stiff me.

I’d love to leave my door unlocked when I leave the house, but this ain’t Canada.

Come on. I ain’t scared of you.

Then I saw little our Tiffany. I’m thinking, you know, 8-year-old, while girl, middle of the ghetto—

A ghetto is a poor residential area of a city, usually troubled by large amounts of crime.

She about to start some shit, Zed. If you ask me, I say she’s up to something.

Shit, like the words pop and bust in this clip, is another word with many slang meanings.

In this case, to start some shit equals star some trouble.

We often say if you ask me right before saying what we think about something.

I love my job.

If you ask me, anyone who hates their job has no one to blame but themselves.

We make our own destinies, and I’ve made a sweet one here.

He says the girl was up to something.

This means she was planning to do something wrong or was doing something secret.

He thinks the girl is an alien.

A similar expression is to be up to no good.

You know, not too long ago, I would have been worried that if I left you alone, you’d be up to no good with some blond bimbo.

Oh, I’ve changed.

Joining the Man in Black franchise, what, 22 years after the first film came out.

How’s it feel? ‘Cause I was just a kid when that one came out.

I was 14, were you?

We’re the same age. We were 14.

So—I remembered being wildly impressed by the film and the world it created, and– Will Smith and how cool he was.

And then walking outside and then kinda looking at things kinda differently, you know.

Looking between the – down the alleyways.

And, then, down in the sewer— kind of trap—and thinking—

“Wow I wonder if there are any aliens around this place” you know?

So, I like the fantasy that it instills in one.

What qualities do you guys have though that would make you a reason to be recruited by Man in Black?

Like you, yourselves.

We’re not aliens.

I think, uhm—

I think curiosity, which is something that my character, M, has in spades— when she gets the sense that, you know, there’s, you know— more than what meets the eye to the experience of being human and being on the earth.

When you get the sense that something is a certain way, you have a feeling that what you believe is true.

You know what? I don’t have time for this. Find another way home.

I’m starting to get the sense that you’re angry with me.

Really? What tipped you off?

Couple things, actually.

Your tone of voice, your body language—

Get out.

Well, now, that.

When we say that there’s more to something than meets the eye, we’re saying that something is not as simple as it looks.

Example: There’s more to this country than it meets the eye.

I wish I had time to stay here longer and learn more about the culture.

You can also use this to describe a person.

Example: There’s more to her than meets the eye.

She’s actually a very interesting person when you get to know her.

There is more to you than meets the eye, isn’t there?

Joining the Man in Black franchise, what, 22 years after the first film came out.

A movie franchise is a collection of related films that share the same fictional universe.

Some examples of famous movie franchises are Harry Potter (and Fantastic Beats), Transformers, the Godfather, among many more.

When we talk about a movie being available to be watched, we say a movie came out or it was be released.

I remembered being wildly impressed by the film and the world it created, and

If you impress someone, you make them admire you and respect you.

In turn, if you’re impressed by someone or something, you feel that way.

I’m impressed. Did you write that song?

Uh, yeah. It’s called “I’m A Believer.”

Saying you’re wildly impressed by something makes it sound more emphatic.

Looking between the – down the alleyways.

And, then, down in the sewer

An alley or alleyway is a narrow street between or behind buildings, not usually used by cars.

And a sewer is an underground conduit for carrying off drainage water and waste matter.

So, I like the fantasy that it instills in one.

If you instill something in or into someone, you gradually cause them to have a certain attitude, feeling, etc.

We often use this word when talking about the values, practices or customs that we have learned from our parents.

For example: My father instilled a love for music in me.

The thing is, Cam, all we can do is instill our beliefs in her and hope that she makes good choices.

To have something in spades means to have a very large amount of something.

She has creativity in spades. Her artworks are fascinating!

He has money and confidence in spades. No wonder he’s so popular.
