I’ll be there for you.
To be there for somebody, means to make yourself available and willing (ready) to help them when they need it.
Example:
I have the best friends.
I’ve been through some tough times, and they’ve always been there for me.
All right so the expression you’ve just learned and the name of the song, I’ll be there for you is a way to show support to someone right? so I want to give you five other expressions very American expressions that you can use to show support or encouragement to a friend.
So the first one is: Hang in there, with that means basically is that you’re telling your friends that although things are difficult right now. Don’t give up because things will get better. Hang in there.
The next one is very similar, which is Stay strong, so this is exactly what it sounds like you tell a friend this they are feeling like things are difficult but they need to stay strong not get week not give up
And the next was just a little bit different. I’m behind you 100% if you’re behind someone. That means that you support their decision or your basically there to lend them a hand. And if you say that you’re behind the 100% that means you fully behind them so it’s the way to show them that with a decision that they’re making, in moving forward then you will give them 100% of your support.
So the next one is really great for giving your friend some encouragement and that is the sky’s the limit, it’s basically saying that there are no limits. There are no borders that they have unlimited potential. Nothing is impossible. So if you’re wanting to kind of inspire someone. This would be a great one to use.
And then finally, the fifth one is every cloud has its silver lining. This one basically you can use that. If your friend is feeling depressed if something bad happened to them you would say every thought has its silver lining meaning that even though bad things happen to us.
There’s usually always some positive side to it, so even though things seem bad right now. You never know in the feuture what this is going to be to and so often our lives. Things that seem negative in the moment would lead to most growth. The most learning so we should really never give up in the face of version and of course the best way to remember any new vocabulary or expressions that you learn is to put them to use right away.
So I want you to try this out by picking one of these expressions you’ve just learned and writing example down the comments below and I will correct many of your answers.
your job’s a joke, you’re broke
Your love life’s D.O.A.
To be a joke ;
Normally, a joke is a funny story or trick;
that is said or done in order to make people laugh.
Example:
He told a joke about a farmer and a lawyer that was super funny.
However, more informally, we can say that something or somebody is a joke when we mean that it is considered to be so bad or worthless (without value) that it is ridiculous.
Example: Our new math teacher’s a joke- he can’t even control the class.
The test was a joke.
Everyone finished it in less than an hour.
To be broke;
As used in this song, to be broke is to have very little or no money at all to spend.
Example:
My friends keep asking me if I want to go out tonight, but I’m completely broke.
Be careful not to confuse it with being broken.
If something is broken, that means that it is not working (functioning).
Like, when a phone stops working and you can’t use it anymore, it’s probably broken, and needs to be fixed.
In this case, broken can also imply to be fractured or damaged and no longer in one piece.
Example: He was trying to play football, but all he got was a broken arm.
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke
Your love life’s D.O.A.
Your love life’s D.O.A.
D.O.A. means Dead-On-Arrival, a term often utilized in the medical field to a person who needed urgent medical assistance, but died before arriving at the hospital.
In the song, it is used figuratively, meaning to say that the person’s relationships all seem to end very quickly.
However, more commonly we might use the term non-existent, meaning that it doesn’t exist.
Example:
Her prospects for a new job are non-existent.
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear.
Stuck in second gear;
A gear is the mechanism used for controlling the speed of a vehicle such as a car or motorcycle.
If a car is stuck in second gear, you can’t shift (change) its gear from second to third, so, you can’t move it any faster than what second gear allows you.
In this line, the song compares a person’s life with a care being stuck in second gear- that is, when you start “running” and having some progress, but can’t go any faster than second gear (slow speed).
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year.
It hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year ;
When you feel like everything around you is working for you, that you are are lucky for how well your life is going on a particular day, you can say that it is your day.
If the time you are referring to is a week, a month, or year, you can say the corresponding period of time.
Example:
This is totally my year.
I have been promoted twice at work in the last three months, and it’s only March.
The song talks about the opposite of this situation-When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month.
Example:
I failed my test and lost my credit card.
This really hasn’t been my day.
I’ll be there for you
When the rain starts to pour.
To pour;
when referring to a liquid, pouring means to drop (fall).
It’s mostly used when referring to drinks- when talking about filling up a container.
Example:
Could you pour me sone milk?
When we refer to the rain, it means that it is raining heavily.
We can also make this into a phrasal verb with the same meaning by adding the preposition “down”.
Wow, it’s pouring (down) outside.
You’re still in bed at ten.
You’re still- in beh- daten.
You’re still in bed at ten.
The work began at eight.
The work began-na-deit.
The work began at eight.
You’ve burned your breakfast, so far, things are going great.
So far; As used in the song, it means until now;
Up to the present moment.
Example:
Are you enjoying the movie?
So far, I haven’t really liked it.
Nothing has happened yet.
To be going great;
Successful and happening in a good way.
Example:
This trip is going great!
I’m having so much fun.
Your mother warned you there’d be days like these.
(Your mother warn-jew there’d be days like these.)
Your mother warned you there’d be days like these.
But what she didn’t tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees.
To warn;
To inform someone in advance of a danger, problem, or other unpleasant situation that will happen soon, or that has the possibility of happening.
Example:
I warned her not to waste her money on that movie.
Brought you down to your knees:
If something brings you down to your knees, it defeats you, or makes you extremely weak, as if you were on your knees (figuratively).
The breakup (ended relationship) really brought him down to his knees.
But what she didn’t tell you when the world.
Buh-wuh-she didn’t tell you when the world.
But what she didn’t tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees and seems you’re the only one who knows what it’s like to be me someone to face the day with.
What it’s like;
How it is;
what it feels like.
Example:
What it’s like to save lives?
It’s impossible for men to comprehend what it’s like to give birth.
Face the day:
The verb to face is to confront and deal with, or accept.
So, to face the day is to deal with the day’s challenges, and take action.
Example:
She couldn’t face the teacher after she had once again forgotten to do her homework.
Seems you’re the only one who knows
What it’s like to be me (wuh-dits like to be me)
What it’s like to be me
someone to face the day with
Make it through all the rest with
Someone I’ll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I’m best with you, yeah.
To make it through;
To persevere (continue to progress) through a difficult situation or period of time.
Example: That meeting was so boring, I didn’t think I was going to make it through.
I successfully made it through another semester of my Masters!
The rest;
What remains;
everything els.
Example:
It’s delicious, but I can’t finish all this dessert.
Do you want the rest?
At my worst;
If you are “at your worst”, you are in the most serious, understand, or unpleasant state.
Example:
When I get to exercise and meditate in the morning, I’m at my best.
That’s why when I travel, I’m usually at my worst.
