Prepositions with time

Hey, so prepositions. Yeah, they’re not easy and I understand why. Because we have so many of them. Most of the time you can’t find any logic in why we use this one instead of that. Why we use in, on, that, over, under; Many different meanings, metaphorical meanings, literal meanings, directional meanings, to all of the prepositions. So, today’s preposition lesson is about prepositions with time. Now, prepositions with time is a lot easier because, you can find more logic with that, than other things. For example, see those possible time expressions, where do you think that they match to? And I’ll give you a few moments.

Okay, let’s get rid of that. Now, let’s see. Let’s see what you thought? So, let’s start nice and easy with in. “In:, you can see we use with long periods of time. So, for example, years, seasons, months, we’ve got May 2013 and summer, in May, in Sun, in 2013. We also have, these ones, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. Those are just because yes, no real logic. So, long story short, “In” for a long period of time.

Next one “On”, “On” you can see, we use with specific days. For example: 23rd of May, a specific day, on the 23rd of May. The same as, on my birthday. My birthday, again, just one day, “On”. As well as, Christmas Day and any other one day, we use “On”.

So, let’s have a look at one more, “At” with “At” we use with specific times. For example, 8 o’clock. But, also we use it with, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, all holidays, we would use with “At”. So, specific times, exact times and holidays.

So, let’s have a bit of a test with that. Oky, doky, so the answers, let’s see what you had. The first one, I’m going to Disney World, something June. Now, did you think that something was “In”? I hope so, because, June is a month, long period of time; With months, long periods of time “In”. Now, I know what you’re thinking. What’s the next one? Let’s compare. Let’s meet something third of January. This one, it’s “On”. Now, some of you may be thinking well, that’s June, that’s a long period of time. You’ve got January here. That’s also a long period of time. So, why isn’t that one, “In”? Simple answer. It’s not talking about a long period of time. This one we’re talking about one day. So, if it’s only one day. It’s one day, it’s “On”. That’s why. So, in June, on the 3rd of January. Which is also my birthday. If you want to send me, happy birthday greetings.

I’m too drunk to talk! I’ll call you something in the morning. Now remember with this one, that this one is a because, yes answer; With the morning, that’s right, “In”. I’ll call you in the morning. Next one I went to bed something 3 a.m. last night. Now there is an exact time so we must use “At”. Good, remember we need to use “At” for exact times. And I want to be in New York…New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve, now, this is a tricky one because, it’s a holiday, New Year’s, so it could be at New Year’s. But New year’s Eve, that’s one day, “On”. I want to be in New York on New Year’s Eve.

Next one I have to wake up something 7 hours! something 6:00 a.m.! So and this one, we mean seven hours, future. The clue is in the name, “in the future”. I have to wake up in seven hours. So, when we want to say a period of time from now to the future, we use “In”. In seven hours, in two days, in two weeks, in two months, in two years, doesn’t matter; From now, future, “In”.

The next one you should know, it’s in an exact time, 6:00 a.m. It’s “At”. That’s better,”At”.

Cool, so I hope this first lesson of prepositions, prepositions with time, has helped you understand a little bit more. And we will do a series of preposition lessons to help you understand, all the prepositions and all their meanings. They have metaphorical meanings, literal meanings, directional meanings.
