Business English Expressions and Idioms

Today we’ll be doing some super common business expressions and idioms that you can start using right now in any workplace.

So, it’s a normal day at your job. But, your job is very stressful. why? Because, you have lots of work to do. You have emails to send. Phone calls to make. More importantly, you have a huge meeting today. You just remembered you are making a presentation in this meeting. But, you haven’t finished. You haven’t even started. What can you do? Okay, well the time now is roughly ten to one, your meeting is at 2:00 p.m. You have a little over an hour to prepare. It’s impossible. You need more time. how can you do that/ okay, it’s fine. It’s fine.

She can call her boss. She can make the meeting later. How do you say that in English? Like this: To say you want a meeting or event to happen later, you say these. Can we postpone the meeting or can we push back the meeting? How long? How long does she need? Maybe just one more hour. It’s fine. Hi, yeah, sorry, can we push back the meeting until 3:00? The boss, he doesn’t like that at all. He wants to say no, that is impossible, it’s impractical, definitely no; Impossible. How can he say that? like this: No it’s out of the question. Specifically, if you want to say no, this is impossible, it’s impractical, I’m not going to talk about it ,because it’s impossible. It won’t happen. No, it’s out of the question.

On the other hand. You can use this in the negative. If you want to say, hmm you know that’s, it’s not impossible. You can say hmm, it’s, it’s not out of the question. He doesn’t want to wait until three. He doesn’t even want to wait until 2 p.m. no. No, no. He wants to make the time of the meeting earlier. How can he say that? In fact we need to bring it, the meeting, forward. Make the meeting earlier. Meet me in five minutes, with an amazing presentation. So, you know that to bring something forward means to make the meeting or the event happen earlier. It’s the opposite of to postpone something, to push something back. You can also say to put off the meeting or to put the meeting off you can separate that phrasal verb. This is the phrasal verb version. It basically means the same thing. However it’s a bit less formal. You probably want to use postpone. That’s the more formal version of put off. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Five minutes. She can’t do a whole presentation in five minutes. Hmm she’ll have to improvise.

So what happens next? When you do something that requires preparation but you don’t prepare you just improvise. You are winging it. I’m gonna wing it. I haven’t prepared. I have no preparation at all. I have to improvise. I’m gonna wing it. Sometimes you can wing it and you’re amazing but other times if you wing something without any preparation you can really fail and fail hard and unfortunately that’s what she did. The presentation was terrible. When people expect you to do something but you fail and you fail hard. You do something really bad and it’s your fault. It’s your responsibility that something bad happened, he would say wow you really dropped the ball on this, you’re fired. You’re fired is what you say to someone when you say you don’t have a job here anymore. You, no more job. So of course it’s a sad day, he’s angry, she said, everyone’s crying. Ah we can’t end this like this. Let’s do this super happy ending, yeah. Hi yeah, sorry, can we push back the meeting until 3:00? Of course, it’s not out of the question to ask for more time, that’s perfectly fine, I understand. Ah, you’re great. And now she has all the time she needs to prepare for an amazing meeting and you know what happens after that? She did the presentation and she was amazing, so much so that our bus gives her a promotion. Yay, it’s a great day. Thanks for watching
