Comparatives and Superlatives
Hi, I’m an engineer here at Walliams Industries. Today I’m going to tell you a bit about the company and show you exactly what we do here. What I’m excited to show you today is complete company transparency. Due to some recent concerns from some of our customersو I’d like to show you the process of exactly how we make those monsters that you love to see. First I’d like to introduce you to Offal JimJam. Offal JimJam was our first attempt at making a monster. Sure he’s big and he’s strong and he’s dangerous, but we wanted to do more.
So let me show you exactly how we improve our monsters. To improve a monster, we have to compare it to one we have. So what we need to do is write a comparative sentence into our computer. First what are comparative sentences? Well, you need them to compare two things. In this case we’ll compare Offal JimJam, we’ll call him A and our new monster B. We’re gonna call him Charlie. At the moment A and B are the same. To say two things have the same level of something we say A is as something as B. The adjective doesn’t change so, now A is as tall as B, is as dangerous as B, is as heavy as B, and is as smart as B. The same level of everything. But we want to change and improve B so our comparative sentence looks like this: B is more or less something than A. First, size: Well A is too small. We want B to be more this adjective, tall. For this adjective to say more tall, we’ll put “er” at the end of the adjective, taller. B is taller than A. Easy, right? Next dangerous, for this adjective we’ll put more before the adjective. So B is more dangerous than A. But why are they different? Well it’s all about syllables. What’s a syllable? I’ll give you a clue. Syllable has three syllables. Sy, lla, ble. An adjective with just one syllable, we simply put “er” at the end. More than one syllable, we put “more” before the adjective.
Let’s try with another one, smart. B is smarter than A. Next, heavy. Heavy has two syllables, more heavy, right? Well, two syllables, it could be more heavy but it could also be “er” the end, but the end of the adjective finishes with “Y”, so we need to say, heavier. More heavier? No, just B is heavier than A. Remember with “Y” endings, both are fine but “ier” is more common. So our comparative sentence to create a new monster: B is taller, more dangerous, smarter and heavier than A.
And that, that makes science happen. So as you can see after writing in the comparative sentence, we’ve created a new villain. Let’s meet Charlie! So as you can see, Charlie is smarter, heavier, and more dangerous than Offal JimJam. That’s how we compare things in English, and that’s how we make our monsters; comparative sentences. So comparative sentences are easy, right? But the only exceptions are irregular adjectives like: good and bad. We don’t say gooder and bader. We say better and worse. Look at these words: fat, big, sad. See how they end with a single consonant? If we want to make fatter, bigger, sadder, that final consonant will be doubled. So in fatter there is a double “t”, bigger double “g”, sadder double “d”.
Now I’d like to show you what we’re most proud of, our latest two villains. We didn’t want just something bad, evil, fast, and beautiful. No. We wanted the number 1 of these things in the world! A superlative supervillain! and to write a superlative sentence, it would look something like this: Superlatives describe something that’s greater than anything else. The number 1 of that thing. And how do we make a superlative sentence? Well, it would look like this: Our new monster, X is the something. We want to say the number 1 something. Again it follows the rule of syllables. Just one syllable is the something “est”or with a “Y” adjective, “iest”. More than one syllable, we put “most” before the adjective.
And so this, this is Lady Rella. She’s the fastest, prettiest, most beautiful, and most evil villain we’ve ever created. However… Sorry… Hi…This is what we’re most proud of. We wanted a villain who showed strength, but also glamour! But we wanted the number 1 of that in the world. So introducing The most glamorous! The strongest villain in the world. We simply call him “One”.
As we love safety, here are some common mistakes so you can avoid them. Don’t make comparatives in superlatives. We won’t say, something is the more beautiful. The more, no. It should be something is the most beautiful. Remember those irregular adjectives? like good and bad, well the superlative of those would be, best and worst.
Thank you for visiting Walliams Industries! We hope you’ve enjoyed your tour of our facility as much as we’ve enjoyed giving it to you.
