Questions in English - Part 2

Hi guys, welcome back to another lesson of how to get a British accent and generally understand British people. This lesson we’re looking at “do you and did you” and how to pronounce it with a British accent.

So “Did you” we can pronounce it like “/dɪdʒə/” but, both of them we can pronounce like “/dʒə/” Sounds very lazy? It is. But, we do say this sometimes. So, if we can pronounce both like “/dʒə/”, how do we know whether it’s past or present? Well, you get it from the context usually. With words like: “last night”, we know it’s past. /dʒə/, “did you”

Or: “usually” we know it’s a present simple. “do you” /dʒə/. So, with “do you want to go to a park?”, remember everything we’ve learned so far? How would you change this question? Remembering that we can change “want to” to “wanna” the whole question can be: “/dʒə/ wanna go to a park?” “do you want to go to a park?” Sure. That’s fine. But, we can change it to: /dʒə/. “/dʒə/ wanna go to a park?”

“Did you go out last night?” Remember we have a “glottal T”, could be, so “/dʒə/ go out last night?” or “/dɪdʒə/ go out last night?” we could pronounce it both ways.

Pronounce both of them, just, practice both of them. “Where do you usually go out?” Good question, it’s very common. Maybe you are new to an area and you want to know: “Where do you usually go out?” How would we pronounce that? “Where /dʒə/ usually go out?” Where /dʒə/. Where /dʒə/. “Where /dʒə/ usually go out?” Remember again, we can pronounce that as a “glottal T” or a “true T”. So “Where /dʒə/ usually go out?” “Where /dʒə/ usually go ou ?” Both are ok. Well done! You’re becoming more British. Keep going. I’ll se you in tomorrow’s class. Go and get a cup of tea or something.
