Hi. At this accent lesson we’ll look at Ls and Ts. So we start with the Ls. If the L’s in the middle of the word say for example, “silly”, “chilly”, “million”, you’ll pronounce it like this: “silly”, “chilly”, “million”. If the L’s at the end of the word, it could have a “w” sound. So “bottle” or “bottle”. Another way of saying “sick” is “ill”, so you could say “I’m ill”. “JP is ill”. Or “I’m ill”. “I’m ill”. You’d pronounce it “Metallica” not “Metallica”. “Metallica”

Another common question we get is about the T. One is the true “T” and the glottal “T”. We spoke about that before. And the other’s like an American T. You remember the true T. We actually pronounce it. The glottal T, it stops in the throat. So let’s choose words like “water”, true T “Water”. Pronounce the T. Glottal T “Wa’e”. The T is cut in the throat.

The American way the T can sound like a D. “Wa(d)er”. /t/ sounds like a /d/. Other examples a name like “Matty”. With a true t sounds like “Matty”. Glottal T “Ma’y”. The American T “Ma(d)y”. Again it sounds like a D with the American English. Sometimes for us it’s difficult to know with you say “Maddy” with Ds or “Matty” with Ts if an American says it. See you in the next class.
