Hi guys! Welcome back to our series on how to get a British accent. So, we know that the English language is not phonetic language and specially British English pronounces things in sometimes strange ways not obvious ways. So in todays class, we’re focusing on the verb “Are” and the pronoun “you”. “Are” sometimes we’d pronounce it like /ə/. Remember that schwa sound? “You” we sometimes pronounce like /jə/, again with the schwa sound, the uh.
So, given what you’ve learned so far from the previous lessons, how would you pronounce and say this whole question? “Are you going to go out tonight?” Obviously we don’t say it like that. So how would you say that more British? …. To make it easier it can sound like this: /ə jə gonna/. Remember that “gonna” is the same as “going to”. “Go out” or “/gəʊ aʊ/”. Remember the glottal “T”. So it could be “Go out” or “/gəʊ aʊ/”. “Tonight”. Again “/təˈnaɪ/”. “/təˈnaɪ/”. So the whole question. “/ə jə gonna gəʊ aʊ təˈnaɪ/” Faster. “/ə jə gonna gəʊ aʊ təˈnaɪ/” So from “Are you going to go out tonight?” it sounds like a robot. The true British way would sound like “/ə jə gonna gəʊ aʊ təˈnaɪ/”
How about this one. “/ə jə/ gonna buy that or /ðæ/”. “/ə jə/ gonna buy that” “/ə jə/ gonna buy /ðæ/”. Both ways are fine. This is including everything you’ve learned from the previous lessons. So keep this in mind the next time you want to ask questions which has /Are you./ at the beginning. /ə jə/. /ə jə/. make it really really fast. “/ə jə/ gonna buy /ðæ/?” “/ə jə gonna gəʊ aʊ təˈnaɪ/?” You try. And I’ll see you in the next lesson.
