Present Perfect Simple Vs Continuous (Part 1) - Lesson 5
What is the difference between present perfect simple and present perfect continuous? So ,the super short answer is this, so, in this example, we’ve got continuous, I have been living in London for a year. And in simple I have lived in London for a year. Both of these mean the same thing both of them mean you still live in London. Now, it still continues now and the length of time is one year. But, let’s remove that time period and you’ll see something crazy. I’m lying. It’s not crazy. But, it is interesting. I promise without the time period. now they don’t mean the same thing.
Continuous actually. That doesn’t matter with a time period or without continuous means it’s still happening. Now, so, we it doesn’t matter about the time period too much with simple with a time period. It means it still continues without the time. Period, that’s the same as any other present perfect, simple sentence I have been to New York. I have eaten sushi. I have met someone famous. It’s an experience in your life in the past which has finished. But, we don’t have more information. you’ll remember from the previous videos. Why is my voice doing this?
Another example, another example, another example, I think another example in both of these cases they mean something different. Right, in this case present perfect simple Taylor Swift has dated him. We know that in the past it happened. It’s finished, they dated. We don’t know when. We don’t know specific details. We just know she has that experience of dating him. But, in continuous Taylor Swift has been dating him. Now, you know the difference. Right, that’s still continuing. If we say this. So, be very careful. You want to say it’s finished and it just happened.
Nothing more. You, simple if you want to say it’s still continuing, use continuous. If there’s no time period. If you want at a time period. For example, for two years now it doesn’t matter. Both of these mean it’s still continuing. Now, this is the same example as we saw in the previous video. Remember the examples, I have studied. I have been studying or I have worked. I have been working, if you add a time period they all mean the same thing. But, without the time period then you see the difference in questions. If you ask the length of time again it’s the same you’re mentioning a length of time in a question how long have you blah, blah, blah, how long have you been, blah, blah, blah.
In they both mean still continuing. So, practice questions for you write your answers in the comments have you ever lived in London? Do you still live in London? Now, if so how long have you been living in London or how long have you lived in London. Next, what’s your job? what do you do? How long have you been doing it? Or are you a student? What do you study? How long have you been studying it? Answers in the comments.
