047 - How should I use your podcast transcripts

Hello there! Kevin here with another episode of the Feel Good English podcast, the only podcast that helps you become a badass English speaker and a badass person.

Today we have a Q&A episode, Q&A… Question and answer episode, and this comes from Alessandra from Italy, one of the Feel Good podcast listeners, and Alessandra writes:

“Hi Kevin, I love your podcast. I’m focusing on improving English for business but I really enjoy the way you combine English lessons with personal development suggestions.

I like to know whether it is better to read the transcripts while listening to the podcasts or once you’ve listened to the whole episode?

Take care.

Alessandra from Italy.”

So Alessandra wants to know when you should read the transcripts, which I do have on my website, should you read the transcript while you’re listening to the podcast or after you’ve finished listening to the podcast. Well, I do have an answer in today’s episode.

Go to my website, feelgoodenglish.com/member, slash is the bar that you put after dotcom, right? The slash is the bar that goes after dot com not the guitarist of Guns & Roses, also the guitarist of Guns & Roses. I’m not talking about that Slash.

So, anyway. Learn when you should be reading the transcript in today’s episode and then go get the transcripts by becoming a member for free by simply writing a review, and let’s get into the answer.

So, when considering your English abilities, there are different aspects, different skills that you need to develop, and in my opinion, the most important skill you can develop is comprehension, being able to understand other people speaking and writing but I think mostly speaking, being able to hear somebody speaking and comprehend and understand everything that they’re saying to you. The way that we do this is by developing our ear, by developing our listening skills.

The good news is that developing our listening skills is one of the easiest things we can do.

Why? Because all we have to do to develop our listening skills is to listen to alot of English, listening to English, lessons that are made for English learners helps a lot especially if you’re the more lower stages of English, the beginning and the intermediate stages, listening to slower English that’s why a lot of the websites online have slowed down English, it’s easier to understand.

Listening to a lot of English, repeating the lessons often help you hear the same words over and over, having daily contact with English, you know that you are practicing and training your ear as much as possible, developing good comprehension skills will help you speak better, understand better obviously, and in general, become more confident with your English speaking.

So how do you utilise transcripts to help you become a better speaker?

My advice for you which transcripts, what we wanna do is focus on training our listening abilities first, listening to the episode, at least one time without the transcript is the best way to use them.

Listen one, two, three times forcing your ears to understand as much as possible, you’re using your listening abilities, you’re forcing your listening abilities to try to comprehend what I’m saying as much as possible. As soon as you bring in text, then you’re using your eyes more, visually learning these words and we don’t want to mix yet.

So (inaudible) watching a TV show in English but they have subtitles in your own language, you’re just going to read the subtitles in your own language and that won’t help you much because you’re not listening to the English, reading the subtitles in your own language.

Even with English subtitles, it could help you while watching TV you have the English subtitles that can help you see what they’re talking about but you also won’t be improving your listening skills as much if you are reading the subtitles so with my podcast, you’re going to listen to the episode one, two, three times forcing your ears as much as possible to pick up, to understand as much English as possible, and then, go get the transcript and read along with the audio, so you’re going to listen to the audio and read along with the transcripts so you can see exactly what I said.

This is going to help you, first build your listening skills and find out the things that you missed, notice those words and phrases that you missed and also if you listen to it a few times, you will understand a little bit more each time so by the third time you’re listening to the episode, and it could be four, five, six times that is totally dependent on how dedicated you are but you will understand a little bit more each time and then in the end, the only things that you won’t understand are the things you don’t know, so if there’s some phrases, expressions, phrasal verb that you just aren’t understanding, when you get the transcript, you will find that missing information and you will learn those new words, and only those new words that you needed to learn more deeply so you’ve already understood… Let’s say 90% of the podcast, you will use the transcript after repeating the episode a few times to understand that extra 10%.

Okay?

And this is just my opinion, I’ve seen this work many, many times for myself and for the hundreds of students I have taught in the past, of course there are different methods that work for different people, the most important thing is to do things that make you motivated, that feel good to you, like the Feel Good English podcast so you can stay consistent. So you can do these things as much as possible.

Consistency, practicing everyday is key. So, what I’m telling you here can help you get progress. Progress is a big motivator, if you’re seeing yourself get better, you will continue to study and practice but also finding methods that work best for you, that you feel good about is very important. Got it?

Thanks Alessandra for the question and if you have a question for me, send them to kevin@feelgoodenglish.com and I will answer your questions on the show.

I hope you’re having an awesome day.

Until next time, stay positive, keep learning, keep moving forward.

See you in the next lesson.
