062 - Become Rich at English and Life

Hello there, Kevin here. Welcome to another episode of the Feel Good English podcast, the podcast that is helping you become more fluent in English and more fluent in life. And today I am going to help you become more fluent with money. That sounds interesting, right?

So, around the turn of the twentieth century, twentieth century being the year nineteen hundred actually, so one thousand nine hundred, a young teenager by the name of Napoleon Hill was a freelance journalist and he had the opportunity to interview a very very successful Scottish American named Andrew Carnegie.

Andrew Carnegie who is still known as one of the most successful people ever, told Napoleon about all of the things that he thought helped him to become as successful as he was and he also thought “Wow, it’s a shame that people have to live their lives learning all of these lessons over and over when the path to success seems so clear.” Andrew Carnegie thought.

So he gave Napoleon a challenge, he said, “I want you to spend the next twenty years focusing on what makes people successful and I Andrew Carnegie will give you access to some of the most successful people in the world so you can interview them and find the secrets to success.” And fortunately for us, Napoleon Hill took on this challenge and spend the next several years interviewing over five hundred successful people to find Become Rich at English and

consistencies in what they did, how did live their lives which led to such great successes.

What he discovered was very surprising; the number one way that these people become successful was by playing the lottery. They played the lottery and they all won big bucks, the powerball was huge, it was up to one hundred million and they just played it every week and they won tons of money. That is obviously not true.

But something that is true that he found was that none of these men had any skills that was incredibly difficult to attain by other people, and this is the key.

In today’s episode I am going to give you six steps from the book Think and Grow Rich that can help you become a success. Now if you want to make a lot of money you can start applying this to your life, if you want to become an excellent competent superhero English speaker, you can do that too.

So listen today to these six steps that will help you understand them and apply then whatever you want to become successful in. And because this is the feel good English podcast I’m going to help you to become successful with your English.

These six steps that lead to success according to all of the people Napoleon Hill…First step, get very very specific with what you desire. Do you want to make more money? What is the exact amount? Do you want to make ten thousand a month, ten thousand a year, one million a year, whatever that may be, get a specific with it. Being specific helps us monitor our progress, gives us a clear target which also helps us stay motivated.

Step two, determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. There is no such thing as something for nothing. And unfortunately these days I think a lot of people assume they can become successful quickly and easily using shortcuts or just finding the right answer, buying the right product.

I had an English student once when I was a teacher in Brazil and this guy was very successful within his company, he was the CTO, the Chief Technical Officer of the company. And he told me something once that really stuck with me. He told me that something he thinks is very important if somebody is trying to become successful is they need to know what they are going to have to sacrifice; you have to make sacrifices in order to have big results .

And this is exactly what was talked about in the book as well, what are you going to give up in order to achieve the results you want? It could be time, you need to spend a lot of time on it. It could be investment, money invested to go to school, to study, to study abroad in another country.

It could be your social life, you can’t do as much with your friends if you are trying to really achieve big things, so you have to be honest with yourself. What am I going to have to give up to give myself I’ve been necessary resources to achieve success? Number two, find out what you will have to sacrifice.

Number three, define a definite time by which you want to receive these results. If you want to have a higher salary, by when do you want this? Set a deadline. This also gives us clarity and focus on what we need to do because we limit ourselves to this time line.

There is a quote that goes, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” If you give yourself a certain amount of time to complete something, it will take that long to complete. If you say, “I want to be done with this by next week”, you know what? You will probably finish it by next week. If you say, “I want to be done with this by tomorrow”, when do you think you will finish it? Probably tomorrow.

So giving yourself a clear time whenever that may be is important and don’t give yourself too little bit of time but also don’t give yourself too much time, be reasonable.

And the fourth step, create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin immediately. Whether you are ready or not put the plan into action, take action stop waiting for everything to be perfect stop waiting for the right time and take action now. Starting small as we talk about a lot on the Feel God English podcast can work, just start.

Fifth step, write out a clear and concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire or the goal that you really want to achieve, name the time limits, state what you’re going to sacrifice to achieve that goal and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to achieve it. Getting very specific, writing it down on paper and including all of these steps.

And the last thing you’re going to do is you’re going to put your pen down, stand up, take a deep breath, go down to your local bar and have an ice cold beer and this is the key to success.

Just kidding.

What we are going to do with the sixth step is read what you wrote down in the fifth step aloud twice daily. Read it in the morning as you wake up and read it at night before you go to bed. Why? Because we need to remind ourselves everyday of exactly what we want, especially these days.

This book was written a hundred years ago almost, but these days we get distracted by so much, there is so much information we can easily get distracted and change our goals, change our plans and even forget about what we originally wanted. So we have to stay focused every day.

Okay, that’s the six steps. So pretty clear, pretty straightforward, maybe sound a little too simple for you; but you know what? Sometimes success means simplifying everything, getting rid of all those crazy ideas and new ideas and new thoughts and plans and frustrations and anxieties and all of that and just simplifying and getting focused on a clear vision.

And here is a quick review of the six steps. So, step one, get very specific on what you want to achieve with English. Don’t just say you want to speak English that is way too vague; be definite with your answer. In what situation do you want to be confident in English? At work, at school, with travelling; because you’re not going to become comfortable in every single situation all of the time but you can definitely focus on specific it reasons.

Second step, what are you going to sacrifice for this? Are you going to give up certain activities, other activities in your life so you can spend more time with English? Do you have to give up another hobby right now so you can focus your energies on English? Maybe you have to give up some emotions, maybe you have to give up this fear of speaking English in other places and you’re going to have to sacrifice your intentions to always stay away from fear.

I know that might sound a little crazy but it’s true, you’re going to have to sacrifice your comfort zone and go out of your comfort zone if you want to improve.

Third step is a time line, when do you want to achieve this? Now in the past with my students I would say give yourself at least a couple of months to see good progress in English, don’t think that if you study for a week you are going to see big differences. That doesn’t happen in language learning.

Give yourself a couple of months, could even be more reasonable, give yourself six months and set your goals to that time line.

Fourth plan could be the most difficult one is you need to create a definite plan and begin. It could be finding the right teacher, finding the right classes, going online and using services like Italki to get a lot of speaking practice. Cambly is also a great option if you want short classes, or maybe you may need to take big action and plan a trip abroad and save up money to do that so you can really build confidence in an English speaking country. But take action, decide on a plan and get somebody to help you if you need to do that.

Fifth step, write it down, put it on paper, make it definite, make it clear, put all these steps down on paper. What is your goal, what is your time line, what is your plan and what you’re going to have to sacrifice to get this.

And sixth, read it every day. Read it in the morning and read it at night, read your plan to yourself twice a day to help maintain your focus.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is a classic book, you can easily find it online at a variety of places. I am sure they have the audio book on YouTube. If you want the official audio book to download on your phone in a much more practical form, go to feelgoodenglish.com/rich and find the link where you can download the audio book for free .

I am going to do this one a little differently I will give you the vocab lesson at the very end of the audio. Until next time, I hope you become really really really rich and buy an island in Dubai with your own private jet. And if you do, please invite me to come over and hang out and have a margarita with you.

And speaking of Dubai, how about the Dubai joke? What is the difference between Dubai and Abu Dhabi? The people in Dubai don’t like The Flintstones but people in Abu Dhabi do..

That’s horrible. See you in the next lesson.

At five minutes and twenty seconds I say, “My student told me something that’s really stuck with me.” So the word “stuck” to stuck is “to stay”. In this case it is “to not forget”. So he told me something that stuck in my brain, I never forgot it, it really stuck with me.

Six minutes thirty seconds “To set a deadline”, a deadline is a time or a date when something needs to be done. So you set a deadline, “We have a very short to deadline on this” means it has to be done very soon. Or maybe you don’t have a deadline; if there’s no deadline on this, don’t worry about it, there is no deadline, meaning you can finish whenever you want.

Eight minutes thirty five seconds, “To read aloud”. To do something aloud, out one word, “aloud” like loud and noisy thing. When something is loud it’s very noisy, it is very the opposite of quiet. So, “aloud”, one word, is to do something with your voice, speaking with the volume, a high volume.

So if you read it silently, the opposite of reading it aloud.

So when you are in school, when you are a kid and everybody it has to go around the room and read a portion of a book or an article and they have to read it aloud. You can also say “out loud”, two words, “out loud”. “Read it out loud” or “Read it aloud.” Read it with your voice protruding the room.

Nine minutes five seconds, “It is pretty straightforward”. To be “straightforward” is direct, to the point, easy to understand, not complicated and not difficult.

So I’m going to give you some directions about this and it is pretty straightforward, it is pretty direct, it is pretty simple, straightforward; the opposite would be very complicated.

And lastly, nine minutes forty two seconds, I say “That’s way too vague.” “Vague.” “That’s way too vague.” “Vague” is not clear, not precise. If somebody tells you something, “Hey that’s way too vague.” Often, maybe my wife will say things and she’s Brazilian she’s also a woman and I think that makes her sometimes speak very vaguely, she speaks in a very vague way, not straight to the point.

Americans seem to be more precise and more direct and more straightforward with what they want to say, as opposed to vague, which is not clear, not direct, not straight to the point..

Now go back to the beginning of the episode, have these words in your head, listen to them spoken during the episode.
