063 - Get motivated

Hello there!

Kevin, here – with another episode of the Feel Good English podcast.

The podcast that is helping you become a more fluent English speaker, and a more fluent person. Bringing you lessons that are more inspiring, interesting and fun.

And today I have another TED Tuesday lesson. The video I’m going to talk about was originally on YouTube. Then it moved over to TED, because it is a pretty inspiring and fun video. It’s called, a ‘Pep Talk from Kid President,’ in the video, you’ll find a young boy; I’d say he’s probably around 10, giving a very encouraging and inspiring talk. That’s what a Pep Talk is by the way. Pep (P-E-P); the speech that you give to inspire and motivate and encourage people before a sports game, you see people in the locker room and there the coach is talking to them, “We’re going to do this! let’s do this guys, yeah!” that’s a pep talk.

And in this short inspiring pep talk, kid president, trying to motivate you a little bit. So, this is what I’m going to do. I’m going to make a little ‘English lesson sandwich’. How is this is sandwich? Well, I’m going to play the talk really quick, it’s only two-minutes. Play the entire version. Then I’m going to go through it, and dissect it, break it down for you. And then I’ll play it again at the end. Pretty efficient ay? Trying to make English as convenient for you as possible.

If you want a transcript to this episode and another episode, you can go to www.feelgoodenglish.com. There, I offer transcript to listeners so you can deep and learn more deeply. Now, let’s get “Into a Pep Talk from Kid President.”

“I think we all need pep talk; the world knows you, stop boing. Yeah, you!

Boring is easy, every one can be boring but you’re gooder than that. And life is not a game people, life isn’t a cereal either. Well, it isn’t cereal. And if life is a game, are we all in the same team? I mean – really? right? I’m on your team, be on my team. This is life people, you got air coming through your nose. Your heart beats, that means it’s time to do something.

A poem,

Two roads diverged in the woods

And I took the road less traveled

And it heart man! Really bad

rocks thorns and glass, my pants broke

Wahh… Not cool,

Robert Frost,

But what if there really were two paths? I want to be in and on that list of awesome. It’s like that dude Jeremy said. Don’t stop believing unless your dream is stupid. And then you should get a better grade. I think that’s how it goes. You better dream and keep going. keep going keep going and keep going.

What if Michael Jordan have quit? Well, he didt quit. So he retired, yeah yes he retired. But before that, in high school, what if he had quit when he didn’t make the team? He’d have never made Space jam. And I love Space jam! Well, what will be your space jam? What will you create to make the world awesome? Nothing! If you keep sitting there. That’s why I’m talking to you today. This is your time, this is my time, it’s our time. we can make every day better for each other. If we’re all in the same team, let’s start acting like it!

We’ve got work to do. We do care about it? Oh, we do care about it! We are meant to be awesome. Let’s go out there! I don’t know everything, I’m just a kid, but I do know this. It’s everybody’s duty to give the world a reason to dance, so get to it!!

You’ve just been pep talked! Create something that would make the world awesome!

Play ball.

“I think we all know need apep talk. The world needs you, to stop being boring! Yeah, you!

Boring is easy; everybody can be boring, but you’re gooder than that!” I think we all need a pep talk, like I said a pep talk is a motivational talk of the news in sports, or school and this kid can give you a pep talk. He then says the world needs you, to stop being boring! Yeah, you! know that’s bad grammar, gooder. How do we say gooder with good grammar? Better!

“Life is not a game people. Life isn’t a cereal you know; well it isn’t cereal. And if life is a game, aren’t we all on the same team? I mean, really – right? I’m on your team, you’re on my team,”

Life is not a game people life isn’t a cereal either. Well, it is a cereal,” probably missed that,

l ife is a cereal and you are as cereal as you eat for breakfast. To say, breakfast item. Usually made with wheat or corn and we have a cereal here called life. Look it up on google; Life Cereal.

“And if life is a game, aren’t we all in the same team? I mean, really – right?

I’m on your team, you’re on my team,” so he was just saying, if life is a game, let’s just play along together.

“This is life people you got air coming through your nose, you’ve got a heartbeat; that means it’s time to do something”

So, he’s basically saying you’re alive. You have air coming through your nose, you have a heartbeat – your heart is beating.

A poem:

Two roads diverged in the woods

And I took the road less traveled

And it heart man! Really bad

rocks thorns and glass, my pants broke

Wahh… Not cool, Robert Frost,

And then he goes into a poem, by Robert Frost. And the poem is, “Two Road diverged in the woods”

Two roads diverged in the woods

And I took the road less traveled; meaning, the road that was not as common, the less traveled road, the one that people usually didn’t choose. And this is a metaphor for taking chances, taking risks going down paths and choosing things in your life that most people don’t choose.

And then he says, “It hurt man really bad; rocks thorns and glass. My pants broke…,” so rocks, you know what rocks are. Thorns are what roses have you know, the flower roses that have those little spikes those little points that come off of it that can hurt you, that’s what a thorne is. And glass, his pants broke. I don’t know why. Not cool Robert Frost.

“But, what if there really were two paths? I want the one that leads to awesome. It’s like that dude Journey said; “don’t stop believing, unless your dream is stupid. Then, you should get a better dream,” I think that’s our roads. Get a better dream and keep going. Keep going, keep going, and keep going.”

But, we’re the in the world of two paths? I want the one that leads to awesome. It’s like the dude Journey said; “don’t stop believing, unless your dream is stupid. Then, you should get a better dream,” and I think that how it goes. Get a better dream and keep going, and keep going. Choosing the path that leads to awesome. Doing something different, taking risks, being bold, being courageous, and if you don’t have a good dream, finding another one, finding another big dream that you can follow, and keep going after and, keep going, being persistent.

What if Michael Jordan had quit? Well, he didn’t quit. So he retired, yeah yes he retired. But before that, in high school, what if he quit when he didn’t make the team? He’ll never make his space jam. And I love space jam!

“What if Michael Jordan had quit?” we all know who Michael Jordan is. “Well, he didn’t quit. So he retired, yeah yes”

When you use the two words together, what if, it means something in the past that didn’t happen. But, what if it happened? If it happened, today things would be different. What if, he retired? Before that in high school, what if he quit and he didn’t meet the team, he would’ve never made space jam. And I love space jam. Space jam is a movie, it had I think bugs bunny, the Looney Toons cartoon in it and I; to be honest never saw it. but that’s what he’s referring to.

What will be your space jam? What will you create to make the world awesome? Nothing if you keep sitting there. that’s why I’m talking to you today. This is your time, this is my time, it’s our time.

“What would be your space jam? What will you create to make the world awesome?” So, he’s asking you what is something that you’re really trying to build or create or do, that will make the world awesome, great, spectacular?

“Nothing, if you keep sitting there. That’s why I’m talking to you today. This is your time, this is my time, it’s our time.”

We can make every day better for each other, if we’re all in the same team, let’s start acting like it. We got work to do. we can cry about it, Or, we can dance about it. We were meant to be awesome. Let’s get out there! I don’t know everything, I’m just a kid,” but I know this; it’s everybody’s duty to give the world a reason to dance. So, get to it!

“If we can make every day better for each other, if we’re all in the same team, let’s start acting like it. We got work to do. We can cry about it or dance about it. We were made to be awesome let’s get out there!” To get out there; is just to leave your comfort zone, leave your safety zone and do something courageous.

“I don’t know everything, I’m just a kid,” but I know this; it’s everybody’s duty to give the world a reason to dance. So, get to it!” So, he is a kid, but he says it’s everybody’s duty, it’s everybody’s obligation to give the world a reason to dance. This is a metaphor. To give the world a reason to be happy – right? To make the world a happy place. Because when you’re dancing, you’re probably happy – right?

So, get to it; to get to it,phrasal verb, to get to something, I need to get to it, or you need to get to it. It means to start and to do something. So he says, so get to it.

You’ve just been pep talked, create something that will make the world awesome! Play ball!

“You’ve just been pep talked, create something that will make the world awesome!” And the baseball metaphor, play ball! This is, when you start a baseball game, you will say, play ball! So, what is kid president telling you to do? Get to it!

“I think we all need pep talk; the world knows you, stop boing. Yeah, you!

That will do it for today’s feelgoodeglish, I hope you’re inspired to go out there and create something; go after it, go get it! keep going and going and going, and in the end, make somebody dance!
