part A

Good afternoon. We’ve been talking about preparing children for natural hazards. Today we have with this Ramon with the community emergency committee in El Salvador.

He has some great stories. Thanks for joining us today Ramon.

Thanks for having me.

Yeah, I’ve got a few stories. One that stands out in particular is these three teenage boys who saved a seven-year-old boy named Oscar.

Wow. What happened?

Well, this is back when El Salvador was hit by tropical storm Stan if you remember that. And at that same time the Santa Ana volcano erupted. So, as you can imagine this was a huge emergency situation.

Something like 70,000 people had to be evacuated from that area because of the mudslides and flooding. There was mud and water everywhere.

She sounds terrible.

it was, but fortunately a lot of the kids in that area had been educated on what to do in an emergency. Oscar, the seven-year-old I mentioned, so he was caught in the mud, totally stuck, could not move. It’s up to his shoulders. When these three teenage boys come along. CM there totally caught.

So, they start scooping up the mud with their own hands and fingers fast as they can. They lift him up scoop him out of the mud just in time.

These three boys risk their own lives doing this.

Wow, heroes, they must’ve been scared, though.

sure, but they knew what they needed to do. They’d been educated on how to act in an emergency
