سلام، دوستان! به بخش دایره لغات، واسه درس ۸ از ۵۰۴ واژه‌ی کاملا ضروری خوش اومدین. آماده‌این؟ بیاید شروع کنیم.

کلمه‌ی اولی که توی این درس داریم “exaggerate” هستش. Exaggerate یعنی چیزی رو بهتری از چیزی که هست نشون دادن؛ غلو کردن. یه فعله. بذارید چند تا مثال ببینیم. الف) وقتی که گفت اتومبیلش بهترین اتومبیل دنیا است سعی نمی‌کرد شما را فریب دهد، او فقط مبالغه می‌کرد. ب) دفتردار درباره‌ی اهمیت خود برای شرکت غلو کرد. ج) قطعا زمانی که گفت قد «شکیل اُنیل» هشت فوت است، مبالغه می‌کرد.

کلمه‌ی دوم این درس “amateur” هستش. Amateur یعنی کسی که یه چیزی رو واسه تفریح انجام می‌ده، نه واسه پول یا به عنوان یه حرفه. یه اسمه، و یه صفت. در واقع بر عکس “professional” هستش، درسته؟ متضادن. الف) دونده آماتور دو صحرایی می‌خواست در المپیک شرکت کند. ب) بعد از آواز، به «دان» گفته شد که او چیزی بهتر از یک آماتور نیست. ج) گلف‌بازان حرفه‌ای از آماتورهایی که فکر می‌کنند به خوبی افرادی که بخاطر پول بازی می‌کنند هستند، بیزارند.

سومی واسه این درس “mediocre” هستش. Mediocre یعنی نه خوب نه بد؛ متوسط؛ معمولی. یه صفته. الف) خانم «ایوانز» بعد از خواندن انشاء، به من گفت متوسط است و می‌توانم بهتر بنویسم. ب) «هاوارد» دانشمندی معمولی بود که هرگز هیچ کشف منحصر به فردی نکرد. ج) فیلم برجسته‌ای نبود، تنها یک فیلم معمولی بود.

بعدی، “variety”. Variety یعنی عدم مثل هم بودن؛ یه سری چیزهای مختلف. یه اسمه. الف) رستوران «الدورادو» غذاهای بسیار متنوعی سرو می‌کند. ب) آن نمایش، انواع سرگرمی‌ها را نشان می‌داد. ج) او به دلایل گوناگون، با مشکلات پیش‌بینی نشده‌ای روبه رو شد.

کلمه‌ی بعدی که داریم “valid” هستش. Valid یعنی متکی به حقایق یا اعتبار؛ معتبر؛ درست. یه صفته. الف) شاهد از دادن پاسخ‌های موثق به پرسش‌های قاضی غفلت کرد. ب) «ریتا» برای محکوم کردن سبک زندگی پدرش دلایل معتبری داشت. ج) بعد از اینکه «دِیو» پروانه کار معتبری را ارائه کرد، رئیس به استخدام فوری او رضایت داد.

بعدیمون “survive” هستش. Survive یعنی بیشتر زندگی کردن از؛ بقا یافتن پس از. یه فعله. بذارید مثال‌ها رو ببینیم. الف) معلوم نبود که آیا از باران سیل‌آسا جان سالم به سر می‌بريم. ب) بعضی از افراد بر این باورند که تنها قوی‌ترین‌ها باید زنده بمانند. ج) کپسول فضایی به گونه‌ای ساخته شده بود که پس از سفر فضایی طولانی باقی بماند.

بعدی توی لیست، “weird”. اوه، شرط می‌بندم این یکی رو زیاد شنیده‌ین. Weird یعنی اسرارآمیز؛ غیرزمینی؛ به طور خودمونی یعنی عجیب و غریب، درست؟ یه صفته. الف) با آن آرایش وحشتناک روی صورتش، عجیب به نظر می‌رسید. ب) وقتی «آلین» وارد خانه جن‌زده شد احساس کرد چیزهای عجیبی در حال رخ دادن است. ج) «بکی» پس از بلعیدن قرص ها، احساس عجیبی داشت.

کلمه‌ی بعدی “prominent” هستش، prominent. یعنی مشهور؛ مهم. یه صفته. الف) موکلم، تاجر مشهوری است. ب) در تاریخ فرانسه «ناپلئون» وجهه‌ی مهمی است. ج) ویژگی برجسته‌ی چهره‌ی آن مدل، چشم‌های بنفشش بود.

کلمه‌ی بعدمون “security” هستش. این یکی رو می‌دونید. Security یعنی عاری از خطر، مراقبت، یا ترس؛ احساس یا حالت امن بودن. یه اسمه، درسته؟ الف) سرایدار ما، امنیت ناشی از قفل بودن همه‌ی درها را در شب دوست دارد. ب) هنگامی که رئیس جمهور سفر می‌کند، اقدامات شدید امنیتی اتخاذ می‌شود. ج) «پابلو» می‌خواست امنیت سبک زندگی‌اش را حفظ کند.

کلمه‌ی بعدی که داریم “bulky” هستش. آیا کلمه‌ی “massive” رو از درس قبلی به یاد می‌آرین؟ مترادفن، درست؟ پس، bulky یعنی فضاگیر؛ درشت. یه صفته. الف) «چارلی» و «مرتی» بسته‌ی جاگیر را از داخل اتومبیل برد‌اشتند. ب) میز بزرگ، کاملاً حجیم و حمل آن غیر ممکن بود. ج) «آلسن» به ما گفت که مشتری‌اش چیزی می‌خواهد که خیلی جاگیر نباشد.

بعدی، “reluctant”. Reluctant یعنی بی‌میل. دوباره، یه صفته. الف) درک اینکه «هرمن» برای بیرون رفتن و یافتن کار بی‌میل بود، ساده بود. ب) بیمار تمایل نداشت تمام حقیقت غم‌انگیز را به پرستار بگوید. ج) مایل نبودم امنیت زندگی خانوادگی را از دست بدهم.

و آخریمون واسه این درس، “obvious”. Obvious یعنی به راحتی درک یا دیده بشود؛ شفاف برای چشمان یا ذهن؛ غیرقابل شک؛ آشکار. یه صفته. الف) بدیهی بود که چوب‌بُر پس از کار روزانه‌اش خسته بود. ب) این حقیقت که «دارسی» پسر محبوبی بود، برای همه آشکار بود. ج) سرنخ آنقدر واضح بود که کارآگاه به آن توجه نکرد.

Hi there, guys! Welcome to the vocabulary part, for lesson 8 of 504 Absolutely Essential Words. Are you ready? Let’s begin.

The first word we have in this lesson is “exaggerate”. Exaggerate means to make something greater than it is; to overstate. It’s a verb. Let’s see some examples. A) He wasn’t trying to deceive* you when he said that his was the best car in the world; he was just exaggerating. B) The bookkeeper exaggerated her importance to the company. C) When he said that O’Neal was eight feet tall, he was undoubtedly* exaggerating.

The second word of this lesson is “amateur”. Amateur means someone who does something for pleasure, not for money or as a profession. It’s a noun, and an adjective. It’s actually the opposite of “professional”, right? They’re antonyms. A) The amateur cross-country runner wanted to be in the Olympics. B) After his song, Don was told that he wasn’t good enough to be anything but an amateur. C) Professional golfers resent* amateurs who think they are as good as the people who play for money.

The third one for this lesson is “mediocre”. Mediocre means neither good nor bad; average; ordinary. It’s an adjective. A) After reading my composition, Mrs Evans remarked that it was mediocre and that I could do better. B) Howard was a mediocre scientist who never made any unique* discoveries. C) The movie wasn’t a great one; it was only mediocre.

Next, “variety”. Variety means lack of sameness; a number of different things. It’s a noun. A) Eldorado Restaurant serves a wide variety of foods. B) The show featured a variety of entertainment. C) He faced unforeseen* problems for a variety of reasons.

The next word we have is “valid”. Valid means supported by the facts or authority; sound; true. It’s an adjective. A) The witness neglected* to give valid answers to the judge’s questions. B) Rita had valid reasons for denouncing* her father’s way of life. C) When Dave presented valid working papers, the foreman consented* to hiring him immediately.

Our next one is “survive”. Survive means to live longer than; to remain alive after. It’s a verb. Let’s see the examples. A) It was uncertain whether we would survive the torrent* of rain. B) Some people believe that only the strongest should survive. C) The space capsule* was built to survive a long journey in space.

Next one on the list, “weird”. Oh, I bet you’ve heard this one a lot. Weird means mysterious; unearthly; informally it means very strange, right? It’s an adjective. A) She looked weird with that horrible makeup on her face. B) Allen felt that weird things were starting to happen when he entered the haunted house. C) Becky had a weird feeling after swallowing the pills.

The next word is “prominent”, prominent. It means well-known; important. It’s an adjective. A) My client* is a prominent businessperson. B) Napoleon is a prominent figure in the history of France. C) Her violet eyes were the prominent feature of the model’s face.

Our next word is “security”. You know this one. Security means freedom from danger, care, or fear; feeling or condition of being safe. It’s a noun, right? A) Our janitor likes the security of having all doors locked at night. B) When the president travels, strict security measures are taken. C) Pablo wanted to preserve* the security of his lifestyle.

The next word we have is “bulky”. Do you remember the word “massive” from our previous lesson? They’re synonyms, right? So, bulky means taking up much space; large. It’s an adjective. A) Charley and Morty removed the bulky package from the car. B) The massive* desk was quite bulky and impossible to carry. C) His client* wanted an item that wasn’t so bulky, Olsen told us.

Next one, “reluctant”. Reluctant means unwilling. Again, it’s an adjective. A) It was easy to see that Herman was reluctant to go out and find a job. B) The patient was reluctant to tell the nurse the whole gloomy* truth. C) I was reluctant to give up the security* of family life.

And our last one for this lesson, “obvious”. Obvious means easily seen or understood; clear to the eye or mind; not to be doubted; plain. It’s an adjective. A) It was obvious that the lumberjack was tired after his day’s work. B) The fact that Darcy was a popular* boy was obvious to all. C) The detective missed the clue because it was too obvious.
