Sugar Man - Point of View

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson.

Okay, so in today’s lesson I’m going to tell you a story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now, in the present. So let’s start.

There is a shark and his name is Peter and there’s also a dolphin and her name is Elizabeth. And Peter and Elizabeth both live in the Atlantic Ocean. And they know each other because they attend the same swimming school.

Well, Peter has a crush on Elizabeth and Peter always wears his heart on his sleeve. So Peter tells Elizabeth he wants to date her because he has a crush on her. Well, unfortunately for Peter, Elizabeth is unable to date him because she is already dating Larry the whale.

Well, one day, Larry and Elizabeth go to a movie together. And, unfortunately, Larry gets liquored up before he goes to the movie and then he acts rude to Elizabeth during the movie.

Let me tell you what he does. He eats all of the popcorn that they have to eat during the movie. He does not allow Elizabeth to eat any of it. And he spills his orange juice on Elizabeth. And then he tries to kiss Elizabeth seven times after she tells him she does not want to kiss him.

Well, the next day, Elizabeth calls Larry and she wants Larry to apologize to her for his rude behavior at the movie. But Larry doesn’t think he was rude at the movie. So then Elizabeth demands that Larry apologize to her. But Larry is pigheaded, so he refuses to apologize. So Elizabeth pulls the plug on her relationship with Larry.

Well, the next day, Elizabeth sees Peter at school and she tells Peter that she pulled the plug on her relationship with Larry. And Elizabeth has a crush on Peter because he always wears his heart on his sleeve. So Elizabeth asks Peter out. Peter happily says yes because he still has a crush on Elizabeth.

Well, after Peter and Elizabeth date for one year, they get married in the Pacific Ocean. And then they adopt two baby seals and they live happily together as a family in the Atlantic Ocean.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first point of view story. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen some time in the future. So let’s start.

Okay, some time in the future, let’s say seven years in the future, there will be a shark and his name will be Peter. And there will also be a dolphin and her name is going to be Elizabeth.

And Peter and Elizabeth are going to live in the Atlantic Ocean, they’re both going to live there. And they’re going to know each other because they’re both going to attend the same swimming school.

Well, Peter’s going to have a crush on Elizabeth and he’s always going to wear his heart on his sleeve.

So Peter’s going to tell Elizabeth he wants to date her because he has a crush on her. But unfortunately, Elizabeth is going to be unable to date Peter because she’s already going to be dating Larry the whale.

Well, one day, Elizabeth and Larry are going to go to a movie together. But unfortunately, Larry’s going to get liquored up before going to the movie and then he’s going to act rude to Elizabeth during the movie.

So Elizabeth is going to ask Peter out. Peter is going to happily say yes because he’s still going to have a crush on Elizabeth. Well, Peter and Elizabeth will date for one year and then they will get married in the Pacific Ocean. And then they’re going to adopt two baby seals and their family will live happily together in the Atlantic Ocean.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it will happen some time in the future.

Okay, so we have one more point of view story in this lesson. In this story, I’m going to tell you the story from Elizabeth’s point of view and the story will be told as if it has already happened in the past. So let’s start the story.

Hello, my name is Elizabeth and I’m a dolphin and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago.

You see, at that time I lived in the Atlantic Ocean and Peter the shark also lived in the Atlantic Ocean. And Peter and I knew each other because we both attended the same swimming school.

Well, Peter had a crush on me and he always wore his heart on his sleeve. So Peter told me he wanted to date me because he had a crush on me. Well, unfortunately, I was unable to date Peter because I was already dating Larry the whale.

Well, one day, Larry and I went to a movie together. But unfortunately, Larry got liquored up before the movie. Yes, he got liquored up before the movie and then he was rude to me during the movie.

Let me tell you what he did. He ate all of the popcorn that we had to eat during the movie. He didn’t let me eat any of it. And he spilled his orange juice on me. And then he tried to kiss me seven times after I told him I did not want to kiss him. So you can see he was very rude.

Well, the next day I called Larry. I called him because I wanted him to apologize to me for his rude behavior at the movie. But Larry didn’t think he was rude during the movie.

So then I demanded that Larry apologize to me. But Larry was pigheaded so he refused to apologize. So I pulled the plug on our relationship. I pulled the plug on my relationship with Larry.

Well, the next day, I saw Peter at school and I told him that I had pulled the plug on my relationship with Larry. And I have something else to tell you. At that time, I had a crush on Peter because he always wore his heart on his sleeve.

So I asked him out. I asked Peter out and he happily said yes because he still had a crush on me. Well, after Peter and I dated for one year we got married in the Pacific Ocean and then we adopted two baby seals. And after that we lived happily together as a family in the Atlantic Ocean.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story from Elizabeth’s point of view. And the story was told as if it had already happened in the past.

So that brings us to the end of this lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each story, I want you to remember the point of view that the story’s being told from. This is very important because as the point of view changes for each story, the words in the story change, okay?

So as you listen to these stories more and more, you’ll start to understand how the words change as the point of view changes. Okay, so just listen to the stories, remember the point of view the story is being told from and just try and understand what’s happening in the story each time you listen to it.
