Use “DO” for emphasis!
Hello again. Today, we’re answering the question. Why do people sometimes say, I do want to do something or I do like this, I do love you? Yeah, it’s kind of weird. Let’s look at an example. The short answer, the reason people put do in a sentence is for emphasis. A normal sentence might be like this. For example, I’m a fish. This is a contracted form. What is the uncontracted form? I am a fish. That’s obvious. In English contractions are more common. They sound more natural, they’re better. Just contractions are better in a normal sentence. But, if you’re trying to deny what someone says or go against what someone says. For example, I’m a fish. You’re not a fish. I am a fish. When someone says you’re not the thing and you want to argue with them, make it stronger, you emphasize. You emphasize that verb. I am a fish. I pick weird examples, I know. I’m sorry. Why am I doing a fish? But it’s the same feeling for the verb do. Let me give you an example. If a guy wants to say to a girl something like, I love you. That’s a normal sentence, right? I love you. Normal. But, maybe she doubts this and she wants to argue against it. You don’t love me. She’s saying a negative. You don’t love me. But, he wants to argue against the negative. I do love you. He used the do, to argue against the don’t. It’s adding stress, adding emphasis, adding strength to your sentence. So the whole thing would sound like. I love you. You don’t love me. I do love.
In another example, if an angry girlfriend or boyfriend wants to say, hmm you didn’t call me yesterday. Again, there’s the negative, you didn’t call me. A normal sentence would be, I called you last night. But he’s arguing against her accusation of not calling her. So he could say, I did call you. She thinks, he didn’t call her. He wants to say, no that’s wrong. I did call you. So is this the only way you can use this to argue against a negative? No, let me give you another example.
So in normal sentence you could say, I have a girlfriend, I have a boyfriend, whatever. But again, this style adds emphasis and strength to your sentence but in a certain way. You could use it to go against an expectation. So he could say, well, I’m not good-looking. You might be thinking, okay, so you don’t have a girlfriend. Wow, that’s mean. But then he’s thinking, hmm, if I say I’m not good-looking, you think I don’t have a girlfriend but you’re wrong. I’m not good-looking but I do have a girlfriend. So in this case, it would be going against the expectation. Okay, try a sentence with this in the comments below. See you next time. Bye.
