5 English Mistakes native speakers SHOULD know but don’t!

If you’re an ESL student chances are, you’ve heard, hey you learn English. Well, today we turn the tables and today you get to say that to native speakers who should know better.

The first one is this one, I met a boy. When someone tells you something that you’re not interested in, for example, they meet a new boy and you respond with this: Dammit, Janet! I could care less! You actually don’t care. But by saying you could care less… Let me visualize this for you. If this is your level of caring and you say I could care less, you’re implying that there is still possibility for you to care less. So, in other words you still care. But, you want to say the opposite, right? So, don’t be a dummy. Say I couldn’t care less. English students, this is very very common among native speakers. So, again, if your native speaker friend says this one, tell them they’re stupid and they need to learn English.

Super common one is, “affect” and “effect”. Affect, that’s a verb and it talks about how something can change your condition. Remember a verb is a doing word not a noun which is a thing. The noun is this, effect, the result of something. For example, if you eat old chicken, what would the effect, the consequence, the results be? It would probably, the effect, would probably be very bad Diarrhea. So we could say in a sentence, fun fact, the effect of eating old chicken is diarrhea. But perhaps this guy has an iron tummy and he can say, eating bad chicken doesn’t affect me. effect that’s a noun, affect, that’s a verb. It’s disgusting, I know but hopefully, now, you’ll remember.

This one is so common, you might see it in a supermarket. 4 Other level of harassment. So what is the difference? Well, fewer, we use this for things that you can count. Less is for things that you cannot count. For example, you wouldn’t say he has fewer money. Money is the thing that you can’t count, one money to moneies? You can’t count money. But, you can count friends. So an example sentence, I have fewer friends and less money than you.

Another common mistake you’ll see time and time again is farther and further, used in the wrong places. Let me give you an example. In this situation, he wants to say, let’s discuss this more. Which word means more? Trick question, both of them do, but in different ways. Let me show you. He will say, let’s discuss this further. Further means more. You do something more. She can reply, I have nothing more to say. It’s still not farther, it’s still further. So the easy way to remember this is, to do something more, further. How about farther? If the last time you saw your friend, you were quite skinny but then, after a while, you got quite fat, your friend might ask, what happened? So in this case the gym is more far than McDonald’s. But, we don’t say more far .We say farther. So, basically, yes they both mean more but further means you do something more, and farther is talking about the comparison of distance. The gym is farther from my house than McDonald’s. So, what wins? This one is maybe the most common mistake and if you don’t use it correctly, then it means you don’t speak good. Well, “good”, that’s an adjective. We use it to describe nouns. For example, “A stupid idiot” or “A comfortable shoe”. But “well”, that’s an adverb. Think of it like an adjective but, to describe verbs, to describe how you do something. So, to clarify, “good” is an adjective so, they have a very good brain. I mean the grammar is fine, sure, but… No matter how good I do on something. They’ll never write good. I mean they don’t write good. That’s not okay. Write is a verb and so, we need an adverb. He wants to say, they don’t write well. Dummy.

So the next time one of your native speaking friends makes one of these mistakes, why don’t you go and tell them? Hey dummy, you learn English.
