Hello. Welcome to the second lesson. Are you ready? Good. Let’s get started.

So, the first word we have here is “corpse”. A corpse, is a dead body, usually of a person. We’re using it as a noun, but it’s also a verb. Now, let’s see the examples. A) When given all the data* on the corpse, the professor was able to solve the murder. B) The corpse was laid to rest in the vacant* coffin. C) An oath* of revenge was sworn over the corpse by his relatives. So, one more time, corpse; a dead body.

The next word we have is, “conceal”. Conceal means to hide. It’s a verb. A) Tris couldn’t conceal his love for Gloria. B) Count Dracula concealed the corpse* in his castle. C) The money was so cleverly concealed that we were forced to abandon* our search for it.

Next word, “dismal”. Can you guess the meaning? Just look at the picture. So, dismal means dark and depressing. It’s an adjective. A) When the weather is so dismal, I sometimes stay in bed all day. B) I am unaccustomed* to this dismal climate. C) As the dismal reports of the election came in, the senator’s friends tactfully* made no mention of them.

The next word we have is “frigid”. Frigid means very cold. Again, it’s an adjective. Let’s see the examples. A) It was a great hardship* for the men to live through the frigid winter at Valley Forge. B) The jealous* bachelor* was treated in a frigid manner by his girlfriend. C) Inside the butcher’s freezer the temperature was frigid.

The next word is “inhabit”. Inhabit means to live in. And, it’s a verb. A) Eskimos inhabit the frigid* part of Alaska. Now, as you can see inhabit here means to live in. And it has no preposition. So, we’re not saying inhabit in the frigid parts of Alaska. That is wrong. B) Because Sidney qualified, he was allowed to inhabit the vacant apartments. C) Many crimes are committed each year against those who inhabit the slum area of our city.

The next word is “numb”. Numb, letter b is not pronounced here, a silent b. Numb which means without the power of feeling; not having the ability to feel. We’re using it as an adjective. So, as you can see in this picture, this guy’s hand is numb. A) My fingers quickly became numb in the frigid* room. B) A numb feeling came over Mr Massey as he read the telegram. C) When the nurse stuck a pin in my numb leg, I felt nothing.

The next word is “peril”, which simply means danger. It’s a noun. Let’s take a look at the examples. A) The hunter was abandoned* by the natives when he described the peril that lay ahead of them. B) There is great peril in trying to climb the mountain. C) Our library is filled with stories of perilous adventures. Now, guys, we have perilous here, which is an adjective. So, peril, noun; perilous, adjective.

Okay, our next one, “recline”. Look at the picture, recline means to lie down, stretch out, or lean back It’s a verb. A) Richard likes to recline in front of the television set. B) After reclining on her right arm for an hour, Maxine found that it had become numb*. C) My dog’s greatest pleasure is to recline by the warm fireplace.

Next one on the list, “shriek”. Shriek means to scream. That sound you make, as an expression of terror, pain, or excitement. A) The maid shrieked when she discovered the corpse. B) With a loud shriek, Ronald fled from the room. C) Facing the peril of the waterfall, the boatman let out a terrible shriek.

Okay, the next word we have is “sinister”. It means evil; dishonest; frightening. Sinister, it’s an adjective. Now, let’s see the examples we have here. A) The sinister plot to cheat the widow was uncovered by the police. B) When the bank guard spied the sinister-looking customer, he drew his gun. C) I was frightened by the sinister shadow at the bottom of the stairs.

Alright, the next word: “tempt”. It means to entice or try to get someone to do something. It’s a verb, right? You’ll get it in the examples. A) A banana split can tempt me to break my diet. B) The sight of beautiful Louise tempted the bachelor* to change his mind about marriage. C) Your offer of a job tempts me greatly. So, tempt, once again, to entice.

And the last word of lesson number 2: “wager”. Look at the picture, the guy is wagering. Wager means bet, to bet on something. It’s a noun, and a verb. A) I lost a small wager on the Super Bowl. B) After winning the wager, Tex treated everyone to free drinks. C) It is legal to make a wager in the state of Nevada. So, wager means bet.
