Crucible Experiences – Mini Story
Welcome to the mini story. Let’s start.
Nicola is a woman. Her best friends are Heva the dog and Chimmy the monkey.
Together they are treasure hunters. They are on the Hawaiian island of Maui, hiding from a dangerous gangster, who wants to find them. They have been on Maui for a while. They have been hiding because they fear the gangster, Emile Rothchild and his men.
During their time on Maui, Chimmy the monkey has learned to kite surf and has become a famous kite surfer in Hawaii. Heva the dog has enjoyed eating the avocados that grow in his friend’s yard. And Nicola has just been relaxing on the beach. Each day Heva continues eating avocados. Nicola continues to relax at the beach and Chimmy continues to kite surf.
One day, while Chimmy is kite surfing, a big jet ski comes out into the water.
What comes out into the water?
A jet ski. A jet ski comes out into the water. A jet ski is like a tiny little motor boat. A jet ski comes out into the water. A jet ski is like a motorcycle on water.
What is Chimmy doing when the Jet Ski comes out into the water?
Chimmy is kite surfing. Chimmy the monkey is kite surfing when the Jet Ski comes out into the water.
What comes out into the water while Chimmy is kite surfing?
A jet ski. A jet ski comes out into the water while Chimmy is kite surfing.
Chimmy is annoyed, because jet skis are not supposed to come into the kite surfing area.
How does Chimmy feel?
He’s annoyed. Chimmy is annoyed because the Jet Ski is not supposed to be there.
The Jet Ski goes directly towards Chimmy. Chimmy gets more and more annoyed.
How does he feel?
Annoyed. He feels annoyed. He feels irritated.
Who feels annoyed?
Chimmy feels annoyed. A little bit angry, irritated… Chimmy feels annoyed.
He says to himself, ‘Who is that idiot? Does he know it’s not safe for jet skis to be out here with kite surfers?’
What does he call the guy on the Jet Ski?
He calls him an idiot. He says, ‘who is that idiot?’ An idiot is a stupid person, it’s an insult.
Who is that idiot he says? It’s not safe for jet skis to be out here with kite surfers.
And, just as Chimmy is about to yell at the Jet Ski driver, he gets a closer look.
What is he about to do? What
will he do soon?
Yell at the Jet Ski driver. Chimmy is about to yell at the Jet Ski driver. He’s going to, soon, yell at the Jet Ski driver.
But then he gets a closer look. (To get a closer look means to see more clearly. To get closer and see more clearly).
He can see the driver more clearly because he’s closer Who is driving the Jet Ski?
Ah, a giant rat wearing sunglasses. There’s a giant rat driving the Jet Ski.
What is driving the Jet Ski?
A giant rat.
What is the rat wearing?
Big sunglasses. The giant rat is wearing sunglasses.
The rat is looking directly at Chimmy. As he looks at Chimmy he accelerates the Jet Ski.
(To accelerate means to go faster, to speed up. We say to speed up or accelerate. Both mean go faster)
What does the rat do?
He accelerates the Jet Ski. He makes the Jet Ski go faster. He accelerates the Jet Ski.
Who accelerates the Jet Ski?
The rat. The rat driving the Jet Ski accelerates the Jet Ski. He accelerates the Jet Ski.
Does he go slower or does he accelerate?
What does he accelerate?
The Jet Ski. He accelerates the Jet Ski.
Oh no says Chimmy. Chimmy turns his kite and catches the wind. He accelerates away from the rat. So the rat accelerates more and starts to gain ground on Chimmy. (To gain ground on means to get closer. We use it when someone is chasing another. If you gain ground on someone, it means you’re behind them and you’re getting closer.) Who gains ground on Chimmy?
The rat. The rat gains ground on Chimmy. The rat on the Jet Ski gains ground on Chimmy.
The Jet Ski gets closer and closer. Chimmy can hear the sound of its engine louder and louder and louder As Chimmy is surfing away he sees a big wave. Chimmy turns around and jumps over the wave. The kite pulls him and his board high into the air and he jumps right over the rat. The rat looks up and watches Chimmy sail over his head.
(Sail means kind of to fly over, glide over, to jump over.) Chimmy sails over the rat’s head.
When the rat looks down again he sees a huge wave coming right at him. The wave hits the Jet Ski and knocks the rat off.
What happens to the rat?
The rat is knocked off the Jet Ski.
Does the rat fall off the Jet Ski?
Yes, he’s knocked off the Jet Ski.
What is he knocked off by?
He’s knocked off by a giant wave. A big wave knocks the rat off the Jet Ski.
Chimmy yells, see ya Getty and goes back towards the shore. Getty is the rat’s name.
What does Chimmy yell?
He says see ya Getty, see you, but we say it fast we say see ya, Getty.
When he reaches the beach, Chimmy lands his kite. He sees Nicola who is on the beach also, laying on a towel. Chimmy runs to Nicola and says, ‘let’s get out of here.’ Nicola says, ‘what? What are you talking about Chimmy? Chimmy turns and points towards the ocean, towards a jet ski that is moving towards the beach. ‘That jet ski that’s Getty, they found us. He almost ran me over’, says Chimmy. (To run someone over means to drive over them. We can use this with a car. So if you have a car and it runs over a person, hopefully not, if it drives over the person we say the car ran over the person. So the Jet Ski almost ran over Chimmy, almost drove over him.)
Did the Jet Ski run him over?
No, it didn’t run him over, it almost ran him over, but it did not run him over.
Chimmy grabs his kite and he and Nicola run to their car and drive back to their home to warn Heva, their friend, Heva the dog. Nicola and Chimmy arrive at the house and say ‘Heva, we’ve got to get out of here now’ The three get back in the car and as they pull out of the driveway, five black BMWs come over the hill driving fast towards them.
What kind of cars are driving towards them?
Black BMWs are driving towards them.
What color are the BMWs?
The BMWs are black.
Are they driving slowly or quickly?
Very quickly. The black BMWs are driving very quickly towards Nicola, Chimmy and Heva.
Where are Nicola, Chimmy and Heva?
Well, they’re inside their own car.
Chimmy yells, the gangsters. Nicola slams the car into drive and jams her foot onto the accelerator.
What does Nicola do?
First, she slams the car into drive. Drive is a gear. We have drive, neutral, and reverse. Drive goes forward. Neutral doesn’t go and reverse goes backwards. To slam means to hit something, hit something hard or hit fast. So she hits the car, she hits the lever into drive. She puts the car into drive, she puts the car into the drive gear.
Does she put the car into reverse?
No she doesn’t put the car into the reverse gear, she puts the car into drive, into the forward gear.
Which is the forward gear?
Drive. D for drive.
Which gear does she put the car in?
Drive. She puts the car into drive.
Then she jams her foot onto the accelerator.
Does she push softly?
No, she jams her foot. That means she pushes her foot hard, strongly. She pushes her foot onto the accelerator. The accelerator is the pedal that makes the car go faster. So she pushes the accelerator with her foot. Their car races away and the chase begins.
That is the end of our mini story. As usual, listen to this story each and every day, pause and answer the questions. You can answer with just one, two or three words, simple answers are fine.
Have your shoulders back, have a big smile, use a lot of energy as you do this.
See you again. Bye.
