Halloween! American English Pronunciation

Hello everyone. This video is going to go over the pronunciation of a few vocabulary words, but mostly it’s going to reveal a bit about American culture to you. I had a Halloween party this past weekend, and so I’m going to have a little bit of footage from that party so that you can see what this might be like in the United States. Halloween is the 31st of October. And generally, little kids dress up and they go door-to-door in a costume and they say “trick or treat” and then the homeowner will give the children a little bit of candy. But actually, adults also can enjoy the holiday by dressing up to hand out candy or dressing up to go to a party. And I had a Halloween costume party.

Halloween. It’s spelled with a capital H.

The first syllable is the stressed syllable, and it begins with the H consonant, then the ‘aa’ as in ‘bat’ vowel: ha-, ha-, ha-. The middle syllable has the L consonant sound and then the schwa sound: Hallo-, Hallo-.

I do want to note this can also be pronounced with the ‘oh’ as in ‘no’ diphthong: Hallo-, Hallo-. The final syllable begins with the W consonant sound, ww, the ‘ee’ as in ‘she’

vowel, we-, and the N consonant sound. -ween-.

Halloween, Halloween. Costume. The first syllable is accented. It begins with the kk consonant, kk, kk. Then the ‘ah’ as in ‘father’ sound.

Co-, co-. The second and unaccented syllable begins with the ST blend. Cost, st. The ‘oo’

as in ‘boo’ vowel. Costu-, costu-. Mm, and finally the M consonant sound. Costume. This year I opted for gore and went as a zombie bride. I don’t typically do the gore, so it was very fun to do that to my hair, and do my makeup, and pour fake blood all over my dress. At one point in the evening I did end up taking a short bike ride which was sort of fun because there were a lot of other people out on the streets of Manhattan in all sorts of crazy costumes. Come stand. Be zombie.

Excellent. Slash aquatic creatures. I believe there’s a horse in there, which will be a sea horse. Oh wow. That looks like a blue whale. Woo-hoo! Which seems like a little too big for a fish tank. Wooo! It’s a baby blue whale. It’s a very very tiny one.
