متن انگلیسی درس

Okay, I’m at the gate to the Treasury of the Ancients, I’m going in.

Stay close to the wall. Avoid the mummies.

Got it.

I must say, you’re playing very well for a woman of 23?

22.

Right. 22.

Oh, here come the mummies, which spell do I use?

The hateful strike or the frenzy stance?

What happened to the rest of your group?

I dumped them, they’re a bunch of wussies.

Frenzy stance.

Frenzy, frenzy, frenzy, frenzy, frenzy!

So listen, would you describe your ideal vacation as a wild adventure to unknown lands, or staying at home curled up with a good book?

What?

These are market research questions.

I’m filling out the online registration for your game.

Oh, okay, wild adventure.

Oh, frenzy stance isn’t working, die you undead mummy, die!

Drink a healing potion.

Thank you.

You’re welcome.

Anyhow, on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being always initiated by him, and 5 being always initiated by you, how do you prefer your sexual encounters to being?

That’s on the registration?

Oh yes, it’s quite extensive.

But if we complete it, we get a free expansion pack, 75 additional quests.

Ooh, awesome, okay, I totally like to initiate.

I’m a big old five.

Good to know.

Big old five.

Hello.

Hi.

Leonard, this is Tom.

Hi Tom. Sheldon?

Didn’t I explain to you about your little mistake in the cafeteria?

Yes, you were very clear, as was everyone else at the table.

Tom, however, has been chosen by science as a suitable mate for Penny.

Chosen by science?

Well, what passes for science on dating sites.

They claim to use heuristic algorithms, but it may well be hokum.

You got Penny to sign up for online dating?

No, of course not.

I used trickery and deceit.

This is bad.

Tom is a paramedic with the fire department, but he’s going to med school at night, he likes the outdoors, and strong women who initiate sex.

Really, really bad.

I’m surprised you struck out with Penny.

Apparently she’s a big old five.

Sheldon, what do you want?

Oh, good, you got my note.

Penny, I’d like you to meet Tom, uh, Penny, this is Tom, Tom, may I present Penny.

Hi, Penny.

Yeah. Hi. Listen, as long as I’m here, I’m on a quest with a bunch of noobs, they don’t know what they’re doing, we’ve got one assassin, there spellcasters and no tank.

Can we talk about this later.

No, no, no, no. I need you now.

But wouldn’t you prefer to socialize with Tom, Who is a sexually passive outdoorsman.

Whatever, I’ll figure it out myself.

Bye, Penny.

I’m sorry, dude, she didn’t look anything like her picture.

They never do.

Hello, fair Penny.

Who are you?

It is I, Sir Howard of Wolowitz.

Can I interest you in an afternoon of spirited questing, followed by a flagon of ale at you virtual tavern?

Yeah, sure, why not?

Oh my God, I need help.

Okay, I’m at the gate to the Treasury of the Ancients, I’m going in.

I’m going in.

Gate

A sort of door in a wall or fence.

Treasury of the Ancients

A treasury is a place or building where treasure or money is stored.

A treasure is a quantity of precious metals, gems, or other valuable objects.

The adjective ancient refers to something belonging to the very distant past.

Example:

The ancient pyramids of Egypt.

As a noun, however, the ancients probably refers to a group of people who are very old.

By the looks of it, Penny is probably playing a game called Age of Conan, which is set in a fantasy world with mummies, witches, and other mythological creatures.

Note that many of the words Penny says in reference to the game belong to that context.

I’m at the gate to the Treasury of the Ancient, I’m going in.

I’m going in:

Another way to say you are entering a place.

Here the present continuous tense refers to an action she is doing in this moment.

However, it’s worth noting that we often use it for an action in the future.

For example:

I’m travelling to Europe next month.

If you find the Future Tense confusing, you will definitely want to check out this lesson we taught with Friends about how to use the Future by clicking up at the top.

Avoid the mummies.

Got it.

Avoid:

To actively try not to do something because it might have a negative effect.

You can also avoid a person when for some reason you don’t want to see them.

Example:

I want to avoid caloric foods because I want to lose a few pounds.

Got it:

Colloquial expression used to say “I understand.”

Example:

A: Is it clear now what you have to do?

B: Yeah, I got it.

I must say, you’re playing very well for a woman of 23?

Twenty two

I must say, you’re playing very well for a woman of 23?

I must say:

Sheldon often uses overly formal or scholarly vocabulary and this expression is a good example.

I must say, or the more common alternative I have to say, is used to emphasize what you’re saying.

I must say is similar to I must admit and it is even sometimes used when you’re making an observation on a topic that could in some way be sensitive.

Example:

I must say, I didn’t think you’d get an A+ in the exam.

I have to say, this place isn’t as good as you made me believe.

Oh, here come the mummies, which spell do I use?

The hateful strike or the frenzy stance?

A spell:

A magical speech that someone does.

When expressed as an action, this word is collocated as to put or to cast a spell on somebody.

Example: The witch casted a magical spell on the prince that made him turn into a frog.

The prince is under a spell now.

To break a spell means to stop a spell from working.

Example: The kiss of the beautiful princess broke the spell.

Hateful strike / frenzy stance:

These are two attacks in the game Penny is playing.

A strike is the action of hitting someone.

Hateful is the adjective equivalent of the verb to hate.

If you put a hateful strike on somebody you’re certainly showing you do not like that person.

Frenzy refers to a state of uncontrolled activity or emotion.

A stance is a position in which you stand.

A frenzy stance is probably similar to a fighting stance.

What happened to the rest of your group

I dumped them, they’re a bunch of wussies.

Dump:

To abandon someone

A bunch of:

A large number of people or things.

Example: I have a bunch of things to take care of today.

Wussy:

A person regarded as week, ineffectual, or overly fearful. Often shortened to wuss.

Here we can understand that Penny left behind the group she was playing with because they were not brave or aggressive enough for her.

Would you describe your

ideal vacation as a wild adventure to unknown lands.

Ideal:

Fulfilling one’s idea of perfect.

Example:

Barcelona is an ideal city to live in:

It isn’t too big, has great food, and beautiful architecture.

Unknown:

Not known.

Example: He’s a celebrity now, but a year ago he was totally unknown.

or staying at home curled up with a good book

What?

These are market research questions.

Curled up:

To lie in a comfortable curved position.

Example: The cat curled up as he slept.

Market research:

The action of gathering information about consumers’ needs and preferences.

I’m filling out the online registration for your game.

Fill out:

To write all the necessary information on an official document, from etc.

Example: I just filled out the application from.

die you undead mummy, die!

Undead:

Another name for zombies, the undead are beings in mythology, legend, or fiction that are deceased but behave as if they were alive.

Drink a healing potion.

Thank you.

You’re welcome.

Healing potion:

A potion is a drink intended to have a magical effect on the person who drinks it.

It could also be poison, a substance that can cause death or serious illness.

Healing comes from to heal, which means to make someone who is ill become healthy again.

Anyhow, on a scale of One to five

Anyhow:

Used as an alternative to anyway or in any case to make an additional point or change the topic of conversation.

On a scale of:

Used with a range of numbers to show the size, strength, or quality of something.

Example: On a scale of 1 to 10, how good was the concert last night?

with 1 being always initiated by him, and 5 being always initiated by you, how do you prefer your sexual encounters to being?

Initiate:

More formal way to say to start.

Example: Have you initiated the paperwork, yet?

Sexual encounter:

A formal way to refer to an instance where two people have sex.

That’s on the registration?

Oh yes, it’s quite extensive.

Extensive:

Large in size, amount, or degree.

Example: This dictionary is not very extensive.

I’m a Big old five

Big old five:

Big old works as an intensifier in some expressions like “my big old friend” or “I’m going to give you a big old hug.”

It is usually pronounced and even written dropping the D (Big ol’). Big old

She says “I’m a big ol’ five” in reference to being a five on the scale of 1 to 5 sheldon asked about.

That’s to say, she likes to initiate sex and adding “big ol’” makes it humorously emphatic.

Good to know.

Big old five.

Good to know:

Usually said after someone has told you something to express that you’re happy to know what they have just told you.

Depending on the tone, this could be said in a genuine or sarcastic manner.

Example:

A: They just told me I got hired!

B: Oh wow! That’s good to know.

When are you going to start working?

Didn’t I explain to you about your little mistake in the cafeteria?

Didn’t I explain to you about your little mistake in the cafeteria? :

Here Leonard is surprised seeing a strong man in the apartment.

It is unclear what exactly Sheldon’s mistake was.

I believe that Leonard has misunderstood that Tom is romantically interested in Sheldon and Sheldon is ignorant to this, which based on Leonard’s question, happened sometime in the past.

However, if you understood Leonard’s question differently, please feel free to share your opinion with your fellow learners in the comments below.

Tom, however, has been chosen by science as a suitable mate for Penny.

Suitable:

Having the right qualities for a particular person, purpose, or situation.

Example: The house is not really suitable for a large family.

Chosen by science?

Well, what passes for science on dating sites.

Pass for:

If something passes for another thing, it is so similar to that thing that people think that is what it is.

Here Sheldon is saying that the method the dating site uses to link two people is not really science despite the site saying it is.

Example: His English is so good he sometimes passes for a native.

They claim to use heuristic algorithms, but it may well be hokum.

Claim:

To state that something is true, even though it has not been proven or is believed to be false.

Example: The pill claims that it can make you thin without dieting.

Algorithms:

A procedure or formula that has a specific function in software, like an app or a website.

For example, Google runs algorithms to show you ads on things you looked for in the past.

A heuristic algorithm is a type of a algorithm used in searches.

Hokum:

Nonsense. This is not a common term.

I used trickery and deceit.

Trickery:

The use of tricks to make people believe something so that you can take advantage of them.

Example: A lot of Instagram ads use trickery to make you buy their products.

Deceit:

Noun form of the verb to deceive, which means to make someone believe something that is not true.

Example: His political opponents have accused him of corruption and deceit.

Tom is a paramedic with the fire department, but he’s going to med school at night.

Paramedic:

Someone who has been trained to help people who are hurt or to do medical work, but who is not a doctor or nurse.

Usually you will see them in ambulances.

Med school:

Common way of shortening Medical School, where people study to become a doctor.

He likes the outdoors, and strong women who initiate sex.

The outdoors:

An area that is not under a roof, especially one where there’s nature.

An outdoorsman is a man who likes doing activities outdoors like, camping, running, trekking, etc.

I’m surprised you struck out with Penny.

Apparently she’s a big old five.

Strike out:

If someone strikes out, they fail.

Example:He quite his job to start a company but struck out in the process.

Sheldon,what do you want?

Yeah. Hi. Listen, as long as I’m here, I’m on a quest with a bunch of noobs, they don’t know what they’re doing, we’ve got one assassin, there spellcasters and no tank.

On a quest:

A quest is a long and difficult search for something.

To be on a quest means to be involved in such activity.

Quests are commonly done with groups of other players in games like this one.

Example: Scientists have been on a quest to find life outside Earth.

Noob:

Someone who has just started doing something, especially on the Internet or in video games.

Similar to newbie.

Example: I don’t want to play Fortnite with a bunch of noobs!

Assassin:

Someone who murders an important person.

Example: The mafia hired an assassin to murder the president.

But wouldn’t you prefer to socialize with Tom.

Who is a sexual passive outdoorsman.

Passive:

Accepting what happens or what others do without resistance.

This is funny because Sheldon assumes that because the dating website connected Tom and Penny, and Penny likes to initiate sex, that Tom must be sexually passive.

Whatever, I’ll figure it out myself.

Figure something out:

To find a solution for something or develop an understanding of something.

Example: I can’t figure out how to fix my computer.

Notice how she uses the reflective pronoun myself here.

Whatever, I’ll figure it out myself.

She does it to emphasize that no one else is going to help her do that.

I’m sorry, dude, she didn’t look anything like her picture.

They never do.

She didn’t look anything like her photo:

This is a common collocation for dating online when someone has a misleading picture on their profile.

It’s also humorous that Leonard says, “They never do,” which shows that he has a lot of experience on dating websites.

Can I interest you in an afternoon of spirited questing, followed by a flagon of ale at you virtual tavern?

Spirited:

Having energy and determination.

Example: She’s a very spirited young lady.

A flagon of ale at you virtual tavern:

There is a lot of confusing words here, which are not important to know.

Howard is using a lot of old English words to try to sound medieval.

A tavern is place where alcoholic drinks are served.

Yeah, sure, why not?

Why not?

Used to say yes to something.

We say this when someone invites us to do something which we think might not be entirely a good idea but that there couldn’t be any significant consequence, if at all.

Example: Want to go out for some drinks tonight?

Uhm, yea, I just finished school and I have nothing else to study, so why not!

Oh my God, I need help.

Oh my God, I need help:

Seeing Howard, Penny has a sudden realization that she is too obsessed with this game.

When we say I need help, usually we refer to psychological help.

This is often an exaggeration, as used by Penny here.

Okay, I’m at the gate to the Treasury of the Ancient, I’m going in.

Stay close to the wall. Avoid the mummies.

Got it.

I must say, you’re playing very well for a woman of 23?
