Improvise – Mini Story

Welcome to the mini story. Let’s get started.

Nicola is a woman. Her best friends are Chimmy the monkey and Heva the dog.

Together they are treasure hunters. Right now, they are on the Hawaiian island of Maui. And right now, they are being chased by gangsters. Nicola is driving their rented Toyota as fast as she can.

What is Nicola, the woman, driving?

A Toyota. She’s driving a car. She’s driving a Toyota.

How fast is she driving?

As fast as she can. As fast as possible.

Why is she driving fast?

Because five black BMWs, full of vicious thugs are chasing them.

What are the BMWs full of?

Vicious thugs. (Vicious means violent and cruel) (Thugs are gangsters, criminals) So violent criminals, vicious thugs.

What kind of thugs are they? Are they kind?

No, they’re vicious, violent and cruel.

What kind of cars are the vicious thugs driving?

Black BMWs. The vicious thugs, the vicious gangsters are driving black BMWs. The vicious thugs are chasing Nicola, Chimmy and Heva.

What car are Chimmy, Nicola and Heva in?

A Toyota. They are in a Toyota and the vicious thugs are in 5 different black BMWs.

Nicola drives fast through the twisting roads of Haiku Town.

What kind of roads does she drive through?

Twisting roads. (Twisting means a lot of turns, many, many turns. Turns left, turns right. Turns left, turns right. That is a twisting road)

What kind of road is it?

A twisting road.

Is she driving slowly through the twisting road?

No, not slowly. Nicola is driving as fast as she can through the twisting roads of Haiku Town. (Haiku is the name of a town)

As she drives through the twisting roads her tires squeal. (A squeal is a high-pitched sound. So you imagine the car is turning, going around a turn very fast and the tires make a sound, that sound is called a squeal. Her tires squeal)

What kind of sound do they make?

A squeal. (It can be used as a verb too. Her tires squeal, they make a squeal sound, a high sound as she drives around the turns.)

What squeals?

The tires. The tires squeal.

When do the tires squeal?

The tires squeal as she drives around the turns. And the BMWs are close behind her.

The road is narrow, and the sun is beginning to set. (To set means to go down. When the sun sets the sun goes down)

So what is the sun beginning to do?

The sun is beginning, just beginning to set. The sun is beginning to go down.

What time is it?

It’s evening time. It’s in the evening.

The gangsters’ cars get closer. And as they’re getting closer, the Toyota comes up behind an old woman, driving very slowly.

What is in front of the Toyota?

Another car driving very slowly.

Who is driving the slow car?

An old woman. An old woman is driving the slow car.

Who is in the Toyota?

Nicola, Chimmy the monkey and Heva the dog. Nicola, Chimmy and Heva are in the Toyota.

What’s in front of them?

An old car with an old woman driving it.

The old woman is hunched over her steering wheel. (To be hunched over means your shoulders are forward and down. So she has the steering wheel but she’s leaning over it. She’s leaning over it. Her shoulders are down. She’s looking over the steering wheel. She’s leaning over the steering wheel. We say she is hunched over the steering wheel)

Is the old woman sitting up straight?

No, she’s not sitting up straight. She’s hunched over her steering wheel.

Who is hunched over her steering wheel?

The old woman. The old woman is hunched over her steering wheel.

The old woman who is hunched over her steering wheel, is she driving fast or slow?

Slow. She’s driving very slowly. She’s driving slowly.

In fact, she’s only driving 20 miles per hour. Nicola wants to pass but another car is coming in the other lane, from the other direction, and Nicola can’t pass. Nicola must slow down.

When Nicola slows down the first black BMW catches up with her. (To catch up means to reach, to arrive at. The BMW catches up with her). The BMW slams into the back of their car with a loud crash.

Does the BMW hit the Toyota?

Yes, the first BMW hits the Toyota from behind.

Does it make a soft noise or a loud crash when it hits the Toyota?

It makes a loud crash. The BMW makes a loud crash when it hits the back of the Toyota.

Chimmy and Heva are both in the backseat. They cover their heads and yell (ahhh). Finally, Nicola can pass. She goes fast around the old woman, and so does the black BMW, and the other four black BMWs too. They all pass the old woman.

Nicola drives as fast as possible. Soon, she approaches a red light, a traffic light. (Sometimes we say traffic light. Some people say a red light.) Soon she approaches a red light. That means stop.

“Go,” yells Chimmy and Nicola accelerates and drives through the light. The first BMW tries to follow but a huge truck crosses the intersection and hits the first BMW.

What hits the BMW?

A big truck. A truck hits the first BMW.

What happens to the first BMW?

Well, a truck hits it and it is knocked off the road. But the other four BMWs go through the intersection, still chasing the Toyota.

Nicola turns her car onto Haleakala Highway. (Haleakala is a name. It’s the name of the big volcano on Maui Island. And Haleakala Highway is the highway that goes to the top of the volcano.)

Which road does she turn onto?

Haleakala Highway. (It’s okay if you can’t really pronounce this word. It’s not really English. It’s Hawaiian. It’s a name. Haleakala Highway is the name of the road)

As she turns onto the highway, a red motorcycle joins the chase, and riding the motorcycle is a giant rat.

What joins the chase? What also chases the Toyota?

A red motorcycle.

Who is driving the red motorcycle?

A giant rat.

Who is riding the red motorcycle?

A giant rat is riding the motorcycle.

So now the Toyota, the four black BMWs and the red motorcycle all go up, up, up towards the top of the volcano. As they go towards the top, the sun sets. The sun goes down. And the sky quickly becomes dark.

What happens as they are driving to the top of the volcano?

The sun sets. The sun sets as they are driving towards the top of the volcano.

When does the sun set?

As they are driving. As they are driving towards the top of the volcano.

How does the sky become?

It becomes very dark. The sky grows very dark. The sky becomes very dark.

They all continue to drive fast through the darkness, driving around tight turns. And on the side of the road there are steep drop-offs. (A drop-off is a cliff. It’s a cliff. It means there’s a cliff and then a long fall. So there’s a long fall next to the road.)

There are steep what next to the road?

Steep drop-offs. There are steep drop-offs next to the road.

And how are they all driving in the dark?

Very, very fast. They’re driving very fast around tight turns with steep drop-offs next to them.
