After an old tanker sank near the coast of South America. Several penguins were covered by oil. More than 60 birds were rescued from the oily water and they were taken to the SOCOBIOMA Centre in Uruguay. There the birds were cleaned to remove the oil from their feathers. For several weeks after that they were looked after at the center. The detergents that we used to remove the oil. Also removed the birds natural oil. Which makes their feathers waterproof. So they weren’t released immediately. Unfortunately, 14 of the penguins died. Probably because they swallowed some of the oil before they were rescued. Now 38 of the penguins have been returned to the sea. The others will be kept for a few more weeks until their feathers are waterproof again. Then they will be released too.
