Commentary Lesson

Hi, this is AJ.

And this is a commentary for sick in India.

I’m going to talk a little about that story and where that story comes from.

Actually, the sick in India’s story is a little bit true.

Because I did go to Jodhpur India and I did get sick, very sick in Jodhpur.

Not all of the story is true but a lot of it is true.

It was my first time traveling outside of the United States.

And I decided to go to India because I don’t know.

I had a strong interest in India for many different reasons.

One reason is that I’m a Buddhist.

So, Buddhism comes from India.

Was born in India.

So, that was a big reason I wanted to go.

But, in general, I liked the diversity of India.

So many different kinds of people, languages, religions, and of course it has such a long, deep ancient history.

So, for all of these reasons I wanted to visit India.

But unfortunately, on my first trip to India, I became very, very sick.

And in Jodhpur India in fact which is in the desert.

It’s in the western part of India, called Rajasthan.

The state is called Rajasthan.

And the town is called Jodhpur.

So I was in Jodhpur.

And I was getting more and more sick.

And just like the story I had diarrhea, I had nausea, I was vomiting, I was very weak, I was pale.

All these things were happening to me.

But, so I got to Jodhpur feeling terrible.

And I got a cheap little guest house.

Actually, I shared a guest house place with a British tourist.

So, actually I met her on the train going to Jodhpur.

And we shared a place to save money.

As I was broke I had no money.

She was also broke.

She didn’t have much money either.

And then she convinced me to go see the fort.

So, Jodhpur has an incredible fort.

In fact in Rajasthan there are many towns with incredible forts.

They’re usually on top of these huge or mountains.

Big castles, big forts.

Very impressive.

Very, very fantastic looking.

From the bottom down in the city you look up and you see this huge hill with its giant fort.

It’s really great.

So, we went up there.

I went to the fort.

And I started feeling really bad.

And the begging, at the entrance to the fort.

So I told this British girl.

I said: oh, just go ahead, go ahead and see the fort yourself.

I’m going to stay here and rest.

So, I sat down, I rested near the entrance to the fort.

And I was feeling worse and worse.

And, then I vomited.

Sorry, this is not a nice story.

But anyway, I throw up, I vomited outside the fort.

And then I laid down.

I was so weak.

I could hardly stand up.

You know, it was very difficult to stand up.

So I waited and waited and the British girl finally came back.

And she could see I was really sick.

And I asked her, you know, please ohh, take me to a doctor.

So, we walked down to some taxis.

Rickshaws actually.

But, They’re like little taxis.

And then I remember, it’s one of my strong memories from travelling in India, that the taxi driver wanted a lot of money.

He could see that I was sick.

He knew I really needed a taxi.

So he tried to charge extra.

He tried to charge us a very high price.

And so the girl was upset and another American guy there was upset.

And they were arguing about the price.

And I’m trying to stand up but I was very weak.

But finally, I just sit down on the street.

I’m so weak and the taxi driver won.

Because I just said: oh I don’t care, I pay anything, take me to the doctor.

I’m too sick to argue about the money.

So, we got in the taxi.

And went to a hospital in the middle of Jodhpur.

I don’t know where it was or is.

I couldn’t find it again actually.

Because it’s not a famous hospital.

And this hospital, they were surprised to see me.

Because this was an Indian hospital.

And they treated Indian people.

They never got, you know, American or European patients.

So, I was kinda strange to them.

Kinda something new.

Cause normally, there’s maybe more expensive hospital somewhere that the foreigner might go to.

Like private hospitals.

But I went to this one in the middle of the city.

Finally, I had to wait a long time for the doctor.

But he finally came.

And, he was a really, really nice guy.

He had gone to medical school in England.

So, he spoke excellent English.

Which was nice for me.

Made it easy for me.

And in the story, you know, I just eat a banana and I feel better.

But in the real story, I had to stay in the hospital for three days.

I was so sick that they made me stay.

Three days in the hospital.

Giving me medicine every day and resting all day.

That’s true, I only ate bananas and white rice.

My stomach was very bad.

So, the doctor told me: just eat white rice and bananas.

Very simple food.

So, you know, one nice thing about this, the doctor and the nurses at this hospital were excellent, fantastic, better than the United States.

Many of you probably know that America, The United States, had terrible health care.

So, so expensive.

And also the people, the health care people are not so nice usually.

Doctors always in hurry.

They never take time to help you.

I hate doctors in America.

I hate hospitals in America.

I never go, never.

Unless I’m super sick.

I will not go to a doctor here.

So I was surprised and actually happy in India because the doctor was excellent, the nurses were very nice.

Hospital supper clean.

And it was not expensive.

It was very cheap compared to the United States.

So, I got all this great care, lots of medicine, and I was feeling fantastic after three days.

And the bill was so small.

I can’t remember.

Maybe like a 100 dollars or something.

And in America that would cost probably 10,000 dollars at least.

Maybe more.

if you spend three nights in a hospital probably in America at least 10,000 dollars.

Maybe, I don’t know really, I don’t know exactly.

Maybe 15,000 maybe 12,000 I’m not sure.

But very, very expensive.

So, in India it was like 100 or 200 dollars.

I was so happy.

Thank you so much.

So, day after that, I felt much better.

And I enjoyed the rest of my trip then.

But actually the rest of my trip I could not eat Indian curries.

So that’s also true from the story.

The doctor told me to eat simple food only.

So, it was terrible I love Indian food.

So, in San Francisco I go to Indian restaurant all the time.

In Malesia, I visit my friend in Malesia and his wife is Indian.

So, we also go to many Indian restaurants.

We eat a lot of Indian food.

Indian food is fantastic and I love it.

So, I was in India, but I couldn’t eat anything.

Only bananas and rice and like plane bread.

Just brown bread, chapatti they call it.

So, it was a little bit difficult.

Because for me in India.

But it was a great trip, really fantastic.

And I’ve actually been in India three times total.

That was my first trip, I got very sick.

Then I went back again.

Second time with a friend.

And I went again a third time a few years ago.

And I hope to go yet again soon.

I would like to go to south India sometime.

I’ve always traveled in north India.

Bombay, Rajasthan which is in the west.

And then in the north like Delhi, Varanasi, Bodh Gaya.

Bodh Gaya is the Buddhist holy city.

Gautama Buddha sat under the tree became enlightened.

So, I visited there because, again, I’m Buddhist.

And, I also like to visit the Tibetan area in India where the Dalai Lama is.

Dharamsala is a really nice place in India.

It’s in the mountains.

And all these Tibetan people are there.

The Dalai Lama lives there.

That’s his home.

The Tibetan government in exile is in Dharamsala.

And the Tibetan people are so wonderful, so fantastic.

So, that’s another great thing about visiting India.

It’s to visit these Tibetan areas.

Because, the Tibetan people I think are very special people.

And it’s terrible, terrible what the Chinese government has done to them.

The Chinese government has murdered them, you know, killed them, tortured them.

Horrible, horrible, horrible stuff that the Chinese government has done to Tibetan.

And also to the Falun Gong.

Another spiritual group that the Chinese government kills then, tortures them, puts them in prison only because of their religion.

Really horrible.

So this is a special issue for me that Tibetan issue.

Probably because I am a Buddhist and because I do feel some connection to the Tibetan people.

Because I visited them in India.

So I heard their stories about what the Chinese did to them, have done.

What the Chinese are still doing, the Chinese government.

So, it’s horrible.

So, unfortunately this is happening everywhere.

The American government does terrible things also.

We have prisons on the Cuban island.

We also torture people and kill them.

So it not only the Chinese government but the Chinese government is quite bad obviously.

So anyway.

But, good news, happy news, that India is a fantastic place and I recommend.

If you have a chance, visit India.

It’s a really amazing place.

It’s a special place I think.

Because for many reasons, the history is so ancient and old and so many religions started in India.

Hinduism and Buddhism of course.

And these are probably two of the oldest.

But also these religions, these ideas influenced the Middle East.

They had an influence even on Christianity, and even on Islam.

So, it’s kinda the spiritual center of the world I think, India.

You find every religion there.

So many religions.

They have a huge Muslim population, Islamic population.

Giant Hindu population of course.

Buddhist are there.

Christians are there.

Even small Jewish population, Zoroastrian, Zoroastrianism are there.

It’s another old religion.

It’s amazing.

Then you have many different cultural groups.

A lot of different languages.

People speak many different languages.

So much history going back so far.

It’s just a fantastic place.

And the democracy.

You have all these different people, but they still managed to have a democracy.

I think that’s hopeful.

It’s not a perfect democracy.

They have a lot of problems.

But still, it’s a democracy.

It shows that even if it’s very difficult, it’s possible for very different people to live together, to share a government, to have democracy.

And you know, that’s great.

It’s something I really love about India also.

So, if you get a chance, go to India.

Alright.

That is all of my commentary for the sick in India’s story.

Hope you enjoyed it.

I’ll see you next time.

This is AJ.

Bye-bye.
