How to Disagree

So we need to choose a topic for our project. I was thinking we could focus on international customs. Well, don’t get me wrong. International customs are interesting, but that’s too broad. We need to be more specific.

We can’t always share the same opinion with friends, family, and coworkers, but there is a way to disagree without causing offense. Let’s study some useful expressions to politely disagree… or at least to disagree without making others too mad.

I was thinking we could focus on international customs. Well, don’t get me wrong. International customs are interesting, bu that’s too broad. We need to be more specific. Spring holidays and rituals?

That’s better. Maybe a focus on Easter? I don’t feel that would be inclusive enough. Hmm. Maybe we could compare and contrast how a few different cultures have traditionally welcomed spring. I like that. Let’s see if we can agree on three or four countries. Okay. Did you note any of the ways to disagree?

Let me list them for you. I like the idea of using a slide presentation. Sorry. But I feel like slide presentations are overrated. I think it depends on how visually strong the slides are. I can’t help but disagree. Most slides create information overload. Even with colorful graphs, slides can be visually confusing.

You’re forgetting that slides can use any media, not just text and graphs. And we could limit the content on each slide. Images just support what we say. The focus will mostly be on us, not the slides.

I have to be honest and say I’m not fully on board with the idea, but…if you want to put a few sample slides together and try to convince me, I’ll try to keep an open mind. Okay. I’ll take on that challenge! Let’s note these other expressions.
