5 Pretty Idioms

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to English with Lucy. I’ve got a really exciting vocabulary lesson for you today. Today, we’re going to talk about idioms that include the word pretty. So, today, we’re going to talk about five pretty idioms.

Let’s get started. So, the first idiom, sitting pretty. If you are sitting pretty, you are in a favourable position. You’re living in luxury or comfort. For example, I got a promotion at work and now I’m sitting pretty. Idiom number two, pretty as a picture.

If something is as pretty as a picture, it means it’s very nice looking or presentable. For example, I cleaned my room, and now it is as pretty as a picture. Yea. So, idiom number three is not a pretty sight. If something isn’t a pretty sight, it means it’s not nice to look at. It could be a situation, it could be a view. In either sense, it’s ugly. For example, this calamari isn’t a pretty sight, but it tastes delicious.

Okay, idiom number four is a little bit complicated. It’s not exactly an idiom, but it’s an informal phrase using the word pretty. It is pretty much. Pretty much means nearly, almost or more or less. For example, I’m pretty much done with my nails. I’ve almost finished them. And last, but not least, idiom number five, not just a pretty face.

If someone is not just a pretty face, it means not only are they attractive, but they’re very intelligent, too. For example, she’s a model, but she also works as a rocket scientist. She’s not just a pretty face. That’s it for today’s lesson. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you learned something.
