How to use keen on, fond of & fan of in English

Hi guys welcome back to English with Lucy.

Just in a little, tiny, baby video for you today. I want to talk to you about three little tiny phrases that all mean roughly the same thing, that you really should know, if you’re thinking about taking a Cambridge exam anytime soon. Because, I’ve seen them come up time and time again. Normally, my students are pretty clueless or have no idea about what they mean.

So, the three phrases are to be keen on to be fond of and to be a fan of, to be keen on, to be fond of, and to be a fan of.

Okay, now all of these phrases mean to like or to be very interested in something. So, let’s use some examples. I am very keen on running. you will know that if you’ve seen my Instagram. I am very fond of running and also I am a fan of running. Or I am a big fan of running.

These three sentences all mean that I like running. I am interested in running. Okay, so, that was the affirmative. now, let’s use it in the negative. I’m not keen on cleaning. I’m not fond of cleaning. and I’m not a fan of cleaning. All the same now as Brits like to complicate things a little further. We like to put a so in there as well.

So, I’m not so keen on cleaning. I’m not so fond of cleaning and I’m not such a fan of cleaning so. Because, It’s a fan which is a noun we have to use such up instead of so. so, maybe you do those phrases and maybe you didn’t now there are two things that if you’re going to do an exam.

You must remember that is so and such and also the prepositions. So, it’s keen on, fond of, fan off, and then so and such so keen on, so fond of, and such a fan.

All right, well, make sure you try and use those in your writings especially in the b1 if you can use that in the b1 Cambridge will be really, really impressed.
