Can Jem really be trusted?

Hello again. I’m Mariam. Let’s return to Jamaica Inn where Mary sees Joss and his men planning something. What are they up to?

Mary decides to confront Joss. She tells him that she had told the Squire about him - which just makes him angry. He forces her into his carriage and they head off to the coast, where he plans to wreck a ship and steal its cargo. She now realises what Joss and his men are up to, but she can’t escape. Joss tells Mary to stay put while he gets to work guiding a ship onto the rocks. Sailors call out for help as their ship breaks apart - but nobody helps and they drown in the wild and dangerous water. Joss’s men stay until dawn but daylight comes sooner than expected and a fight breaks out between the men. Joss kills some of them and tries to escape with the cargo. Mary then escapes and goes to get help from Mr Davey, the vicar - but he’s not at home. She returns to Jamaica Inn. She finds Joss and her aunt, dead, murdered, lying on the cold stone floor.

Mary is taken to the vicar’s house to recover. Over dinner he reveals that he controlled Joss’s illegal activities but wanted to stay out of trouble and had to kill Joss to stop him from telling anyone about his involvement. Then the vicar runs away, taking Mary with him, but there’s a thick fog on the moor and they have to stay there until morning. As the sun rises, a search party arrives, led by Jem. He kills the vicar and rescues Mary. Mary is relieved - but also realises that she’s in love with Jem, and it’s not long before they make plans to stay together forever, in the place where Mary grew up with her mother - far away from Jamaica Inn.

It’s a happy ending to an intriguing and dramatic story - I hope you enjoyed it and I hope to see you again soon for another one. Bye for now.
