Mouse In The House – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a bear and his name is Bob and Bob has a problem. Bob has a mouse in his house. Yes, Bob has a mouse in his house and the mouse is driving him nuts. The mouse is driving Bob nuts because the mouse is eating Bob’s cheese. Well, Bob has a girlfriend and her name is Jane and Jane is also a bear. And Jane is in her late 20s and Bob and Jane are joined at the hip.

Well, Bob is an excellent cook and Jane knows this so Jane wants Bob to cook dinner for her at his house so she asks him to do this. Well, Bob does not want Jane to come to his house because he has a mouse in his house. But Bob really loves Jane and he is unable to say no to her. So Bob agrees to cook dinner for Jane at his house.

Well, Jane arrives at Bob’s house at 7:00 and she is dressed to the nines. And Bob is also dressed nicely but he is sweating bullets. Yes, Bob is sweating bullets because he has a mouse in his house and he doesn’t want Jane to see the mouse. Well, after Jane arrives, Bob goes to the kitchen to finish cooking dinner.

And a couple of minutes later, Jane walks into the kitchen and she’s holding the mouse. Well, when Bob sees Jane holding the mouse, he’s embarrassed and he doesn’t know what to say. But then Jane hugs and kisses Bob and she thanks him for the mouse. You see, Jane loves mice and she thinks that the mouse is just a present from Bob.

Okay, well that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. Now remember in that story I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next, I’m going to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future, let’s say 31 years in the future. Okay, so let’s start.

31 years in the future there will be a bear and his name is going to be Bob and Bob’s going to have a problem. Bob’s going to have a mouse in his house and the mouse is going to be driving Bob nuts because the mouse is going to be eating Bob’s cheese. Well, Bob’s going to have a girlfriend and her name will be Jane and Jane is also going to be a bear and she will be in her late 20s. And Bob and Jane are going to be joined at the hip.

Well, Bob is going to be an excellent cook and, of course, Jane’s going to know that. So Jane is going to want Bob to cook dinner for her at his house so she’s going to ask him to do that. Well, Bob is not going to want Jane to come to his house. Bob isn’t going to want Jane to come to his house because he’s going to have a mouse in his house, remember. Well, Bob is really going to love Jane so he’s going to be unable to say now to her so Bob is going to agree to cook dinner for Jane at his house.

Well, Jane is going to arrive at Bob’s house at 7:00 and she’s going to be dressed to the nines. And Bob also is going to look very nice that night but he’s going to be sweating bullets. Bob’s going to be sweating bullets because he isn’t going to want Jane to see the mouse. Well, after Jane arrives at Bob’s house, Bob is going to go to the kitchen to finish cooking dinner.

And a couple of minutes later, Jane is going to walk into the kitchen and she’s going to be holding the mouse. Well, Bob’s going to see Jane holding the mouse and he’s going to be very embarrassed. But he isn’t going to know what to say. But then Jane is going to hug and kiss Bob and she’s going to thank him for the mouse. You see, Jane is going to love mice and she’s going to think that the mouse is just a gift from Bob.

Okay, that is the end of our second story in this lesson. Now remember, in that story I was telling you the story as if it was happening in the future, 31 years in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. Now in this story, I’m going to change the point of view so it’s told from Bob’s point of view, okay? And the story is going to be told as if it’s already happened in the past. So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a bear named Bob, okay? Alright, let’s start the story then.

Hello, my name is Bob and I’m a bear and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I had a problem. I had a mouse in my house and the mouse was driving me nuts because the mouse was eating my cheese. Well, at that time I had a girlfriend and her name was Jane and at that time Jane was in her late 20s. And Jane and I were connected at the hip, we were joined at the hip, I mean to say. Jane and I were joined at the hip.

Well, I was a great cook and Jane knew that so Jane wanted me to cook dinner for her at my house. And so she asked me to cook dinner for her at my house and, y’know, I really didn’t want

Jane to come to my house because I had a mouse in the house. But I really loved Jane and I just couldn’t say no to her. I was unable to say no to her so I agreed to cook dinner for Jane at my house.

Well, Jane arrived at my house at 7:00 and she was dressed to the nines. And I was dressed nicely, too, but I was sweating bullets. I was sweating bullets because I didn’t want Jane to see the mouse. Well, after Jane arrived, I went to the kitchen to finish cooking dinner.

And after a couple of minutes Jane walked into the kitchen and she was holding the mouse. Well, when I saw Jane holding the mouse, I was embarrassed and I didn’t know what to say. But then Jane hugged and kissed me and she thanked me for the mouse. You see, Jane loved mice and she thought that the mouse was just a present from me.

Okay, well that was our third and final story for this lesson. In that story, I told you the story as if it was being told from Bob’s point of view and the story was occurring in the past. So this means we’re at the end of this lesson.

So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days so you can really start to understand how the story changes as the point of view changes. And as you listen to each story, just relax and try and understand what’s happening in the story and always remember the point of view the story is being told from.

Okay, well that’s all for this point of view lesson. I’ll see you next time.
