Chain Smoker – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss, and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in today’s lesson, I’m going to tell you the same story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is Jim and Jim is a chain smoker. And Jim is a basketball player.

Jim plays basketball for the San Francisco basketball team and Jim hates losing.

Well, one day Jim smokes a cigarette during basketball practice. And Jim’s basketball coach is named Jerry. And when Jerry sees Jim smoking a cigarette during practice, he blows his top.

Then he gives Jim a piece of his mind. Jerry tells Jim that smokers are not allowed to play on the San Francisco basketball team. So Jim quits. Jim quits the team.

Well, Jim still wants to play basketball and Jim also still wants to smoke cigarettes. So Jim moves to Smoke City and after he moves to Smoke City he joins the Smoke City basketball team. And the Smoke City basketball team smokes cigarettes during games. But the Smoke City basketball team is terrible and it loses a lot of games.

Well, one day the Smoke City basketball team plays the San Francisco basketball team. And, of course, Jim lays for the Smoke City basketball team at the time. Well, unfortunately, during the game Jim is unable to run because he coughs a lot. Jim coughs a lot because he smokes 21 cigarettes during the game. Well, the Smoke City basketball team loses the game by 72 points.

And after the game, Jim is angry. Jim is angry because he loses the game.

Well, Jim hates losing and he wants to play for the San Francisco basketball team again. So he quits smoking cold turkey. And after he quits smoking, Jim calls Jerry. And he tells Jerry that he wants to play for the San Francisco basketball team again and Jim promises not to smoke cigarettes anymore. Well, Jerry believes that Jim is a man of his word so Jerry allows Jim to rejoin the basketball team.

Well, after Jim rejoins the San Francisco basketball team, he never loses another basketball game.

And he never smokes another cigarette. Jim never smokes another cigarette again because he’s a man of his word.

Okay, well that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. In that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future. So let’s start the story.

Sometime in the future, let’s say 11 years from now in the future, there will be a man and his name will be Jim and Jim is going to be a chain smoker. And Jim is going to be a basketball player. Jim is going to play basketball for the San Francisco basketball team. And Jim is going to hate losing.

Well, one day Jim is going to smoke a cigarette during basketball practice and Jim’s basketball coach is going to be named Jerry. And when Jerry sees Jim smoking a cigarette during basketball practice, he’s going to blow his top. And then he’s going to give Jim a piece of his mind. Jerry is going to tell Jim that smokers are not allowed to play on the San Francisco basketball team. So Jim is going to quit the team. Jim is going to quit the San Francisco basketball team.

Well, Jim is still going to want to play basketball and Jim is also still going to want to smoke cigarettes. So Jim is going to move to Smoke City and after he moves to Smoke City, Jim is going to join the Smoke City basketball team. Well, the Smoke City basketball team is going to smoke cigarettes during the games. And they’re going to be terrible. The Smoke City basketball team is going to lose a lot of games, unfortunately.

Well, one day the Smoke City basketball team is going to play the San Francisco basketball team.

And at the time, Jim is going to play for the Smoke City basketball team. And, unfortunately, during the game Jim is going to be unable to run because he’s going to cough a lot during the game. Jim is going to cough a lot during the game because he’s going to smoke 21 cigarettes during the game. Well, the Smoke City basketball team is going to lose the game by 72 points.

And after the game, Jim is going to be angry. Jim is going to be angry because of losing the game.

Well, Jim is going to hate losing and he’s going to want to play for the San Francisco basketball team again. So he’s going to quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey. And after he quits smoking cigarettes, Jim is going to call Jerry. And he’s going to tell Jerry that he wants to play for the San Francisco basketball team again. And Jim is going to promise not to smoke cigarettes anymore.

Well, Jerry is going to believe that Jim is a man of his word so he’s going to allow Jim to rejoin the San Francisco basketball team.

Well, after Jim rejoins the San Francisco basketball team, he’s never going to lose another game.

And he’s never going to smoke another cigarette. Jim is never going to smoke another cigarette because Jim is going to be a man of his word.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen sometime in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. In this story you’re going to hear the story from Jim’s point of view. And I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s already happened in the past. So let’s start the story.

Hello, I’m a man and my name is Jim and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was a chain smoker. And I was a basketball player.

I played basketball for the San Francisco basketball team and I hated losing.

Well, one day I smoked a cigarette during basketball practice. And my basketball coach was named Jerry. And when Jerry saw me smoking a cigarette during practice, he blew his top. And then he gave me a piece of his mind. Jerry told me that smokers were not allowed to play for the San Francisco basketball team. So I quit the basketball team.

Well, I still wanted to play basketball but I also still wanted to smoke cigarettes. So I moved to Smoke City and after I moved to Smoke City, I joined the Smoke City basketball team. And the Smoke City basketball team smoked cigarettes during games. But the Smoke City basketball team was terrible. The Smoke City basketball team lost a lot of games.

Well, one day the Smoke City basketball team played the San Francisco basketball team. And at the time, I played for the Smoke City basketball team. And, unfortunately, during the game I was unable to run because I coughed a lot. I coughed a lot during the game because I smoked 21 cigarettes during the game. Well, the Smoke City basketball team lost the game by 72 points. So after the game, I was angry. I was angry because I had lost the game.

Well, I hated losing and I wanted to play for the San Francisco basketball team again. So I quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey. And after I quit smoking cigarettes, I called Jerry and I told Jerry that I wanted to play for the San Francisco basketball team again. And I promised not to smoke cigarettes anymore. Well, Jerry believed that I was a man of my word so he allowed me to rejoin the San Francisco basketball team.

Well, after I rejoined the San Francisco basketball team, I never lost another basketball game. And I never smoked another cigarette. I never smoked another cigarette because I was a man of my word.

Okay, well that was our third and final story in this lesson. Now in that story, you heard the story from Jim’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each story, just try and understand what’s happening in each of these stories, okay?

And it’s a good idea to remember the point of view that the story’s being told from because you will start to then understand how the words in the story change as the point of view changes.

Okay, well that’s all for this point of view lesson. I’ll see you next time.
