##Runny Nose – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times but each time I tell you that story, I am going to change the point of view. So first I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present, so let’s start.

There is a gorilla and his name is Gary and Gary wants to go scuba diving with his wife, Patty.

But unfortunately, Gary has a problem. Gary has a runny nose so he is unable to go scuba diving.

Well, even though Gary has a runny nose, he does not want to see a doctor. He doesn’t want to see a doctor because he believes that all doctors are crooked. But his wife, Patty, insists that he see a doctor so Gary agrees to get a checkup.

Well, the next day, Patty drives Gary to the doctor’s office but unfortunately, there’s a problem.

Gary smells alcohol on the doctor’s breath. You see, the doctor is three sheets to the wind, so Gary leaves the doctor’s office immediately. He does not get a checkup from the doctor.

Well, the next day, Patty finds another doctor for Gary to see and that doctor’s office is in New York. So that next day, Patty drives Gary to the doctor’s office in New York. And Gary tells the doctor that he has a runny nose. So the doctor gives Gary a checkup and he tells Gary that he understands what’s wrong and he knows how to cure him.

So Gary is pretty happy to hear this. He’s happy, at least, until the doctor tells him that he immediately needs to get a nose job. Well, Gary knows he does not need to get a nose job just because he has a runny nose, so he runs away. He runs away from the doctor’s office as fast as he can.

He runs all the way from the doctor’s office to Central Park. And guess who he sees in Central Park? He sees his friend, Chico the dog. Now Chico is in Central Park because he’s getting acupuncture. Yes, Chico’s getting acupuncture because he has a runny nose also.

Well, later that night, Gary calls Chico and Chico tells Gary that after the acupuncture he no longer had a runny nose. So the next day, Gary goes to Central Park and he gets acupuncture and after the acupuncture, Gary no longer has a runny nose and the following day he goes scuba diving with his lovely wife, Patty.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Okay, so next I want to tell you the story as if it will happen in the future, let’s say 36 years in the future, okay? Alright, so let’s start.

36 years from now in the future, there will be a gorilla and his name is going to be Gary. And Gary is going to want to go scuba diving with his wife, Patty. But unfortunately, Gary will have a problem. Gary is going to have a runny nose so he is going to be unable to go scuba diving.

Well, even though Gary is going to have a runny nose, he is not going to want to see a doctor.

You see, Gary is going to believe that all doctors are crooked. That’s why he is not going to want to see a doctor. But Patty is going to insist that Gary see a doctor. So Gary is going to agree to get a checkup.

Well, the next day, Patty is going to drive Gary to the doctor’s office, but there’s going to be a problem. Gary is going to smell alcohol on the doctor’s breath. You see, the doctor is going to be three sheets to the wind so Gary is going to immediately leave the doctor’s office. He is not going to get a checkup from that doctor.

Well, the next day, Patty is going to find another doctor for Gary to see and that doctor’s office will be in New York. So that next day, Patty is going to drive Gary to the doctor’s office in New York.

And Gary’s going to tell the doctor that he has a runny nose. So the doctor is going to give Gary a checkup and he’s going to tell Gary that he understands what’s wrong with him and that he knows how to cure it.

So Gary’s going to be really happy, at least he’s going to be happy until the doctor tells Gary that he immediately needs to have a nose job done. He immediately needs to get a nose job. Well, Gary’s going to know that he does not need a nose job, he only has a runny nose. So Gary is going to run away. He’s going to run away from the doctor’s office as fast as he can.

Well, Gary’s going to run all the way from the doctor’s office to Central Park. And guess who he’s going to see there? He’s going to see his friend, Chico the dog. Chico is going to be in Central Park getting acupuncture. He’s going to be getting acupuncture because he is also going to have a runny nose.

Well, I have some more information for you. That night, Gary is going to call Chico and Chico is going to tell Gary that after the acupuncture, he no longer had a runny nose. So the next day, Gary is going to go to Central Park and he’s going to get acupuncture. And after he gets the acupuncture, Gary is no longer going to have a runny nose and the following day he’s going to go scuba diving with his lovely wife, Patty.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen in the future, I think I said 36 years in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. Now in this story, I’m going to tell you the story from Gary’s point of view and I’m going to tell you the story as if it has already happened in the past. So for this story, you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a gorilla named Gary. Okay, are you ready? Let’s start.

Hello, I’m a gorilla and my name is Gary and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time, I wanted to go scuba diving with my wife, Patty, but I had a problem. I had a runny nose so I was unable to go scuba diving.

Well, even though I had a runny nose, I did not want to see a doctor. You see, I didn’t want to see a doctor because I believed that all doctors were crooked. But my wife, Patty, insisted that I see a doctor so I agreed to get a checkup.

Well, the next day, Patty drove me to the doctor’s office but there was a problem. I smelled alcohol on the doctor’s breath. You see, the doctor was three sheets to the wind, so I left the doctor’s office immediately. I did not get a checkup from the doctor.

Well, the next day, Patty found another doctor for me to see and that doctor’s office was in New York. So the next day, Patty drove me to the doctor’s office in New York and I told the doctor that I had a runny nose. Well the doctor gave me a checkup and he told me that he understood what was wrong and that he knew how to cure it, so I was very happy to hear that.

Well, I was very happy though until he told me that I immediately needed to get a nose job. Well, I only had a runny nose so I knew that I did not need a nose job, so I ran away. I ran away from the doctor’s office as fast as I could run.

I ran all the way from the doctor’s office to Central Park. And guess who I saw at Central Park? I saw my friend Chico, Chico the dog. Chico was in Central Park because he was getting acupuncture. He was getting acupuncture because he also had a runny nose, just like me.

Well, I have some more to tell you. Later that night, I called Chico and Chico told me that after he got the acupuncture, he no longer had a runny nose. So the next day, I went to Central Park and I got acupuncture and after the acupuncture I no longer had a runny nose. And the following day, I went scuba diving with my lovely wife, Patty.

Okay, well that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. Now in that story, you heard the story being told from Gary the gorilla’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So that means we’ve reached the end of this lesson.

So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days and just try and understand what’s happening each time you hear a different point of view for the story, okay? Just understand what’s happening, relax, and you’ll start to notice that the words in the story change. And as you listen to the stories more and more, you’ll understand why they change, okay? It’s a very powerful way for you to learn grammar without memorizing grammar rules.

Alright, well that’s the end of this lesson. I’ll see you next time. Bye-bye.
