Roll The Dice – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and director of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times but each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view for that story. So first I want to tell you the story as if it is happening right now, in the present. So let’s start.

There is a penguin and his name is Jeff. And Jeff is a lawyer and Jeff does not like to dress up. Jeff likes to dress casually. Well, while Jeff is in law school, he racks up a lot of debt so after he finishes law school, he needs to find a job. But Jeff does not worry about finding a job. He doesn’t worry about finding a job because he is the best student in his school.

Well, just three weeks after Jeff finishes law school, he has his first job interview. He has a job interview with the Texas Law Group. And Jeff is the best lawyer to interview for the job. But Jeff does not get the job. No, no, no. Jeff does not get the job because he does not wear a suit for the job interview.

Well, Jeff is upset when he does not get the job but he still has other job interviews. In fact, one week later he has four more job interviews but he doesn’t get any of those jobs. You see, Jeff does not get those jobs because he does not dress up for the job interviews. He dresses casually. And right after the last job interview, his wallet is pickpocketed. Poor Jeff.

Jeff is down on his luck but he remains positive because he still has one more job interview. And before that job interview, Jeff’s mother tells Jeff that he needs to dress in a suit. He needs to wear a suit for that job interview. And Jeff knows that his mother is right but Jeff rolls the dice. He does not wear a suit for the job interview. Instead, he dresses casually for the job interview.

And Jeff has the job interview and after the job interview, Jeff is offered the job. And the woman who offers him the job tells Jeff that she does not care what he wears as long as he’s a good lawyer and he’s also a good person.

Okay, so that’s the end of the first story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s start.

10 years from now in the future there will be a penguin and his name is going to be Jeff. And Jeff will be a lawyer and Jeff is not going to like to dress up. He’s going to like to dress casually. And while Jeff is in law school, he’s going to rack up a lot of debt. So after he finishes law school, he’s going to need to find a job.

And Jeff is not going to worry about finding a job. He’s not going to worry about finding a job because he’s going to be the best student in his school. Well, just three weeks after Jeff finishes law school, he’s going to have his first job interview. He’s going to have the job interview with the Texas Law Group and he will be the best lawyer to interview for the job but he isn’t going to get the job. Jeff isn’t going to get the job because he isn’t going to wear a suit for the job interview.

Well, Jeff’s going to be disappointed but he still is going to have more job interviews. In fact, one week later he’s going to have four more job interviews. But unfortunately, he isn’t going to get any of those jobs either. He isn’t going to get any of those jobs because he isn’t going to dress up for the job interview. He’s going to dress casually for the job interview. And after the last of those four job interviews, his wallet is going to be pickpocketed. Poor Jeff.

Jeff is going to be down on his luck but he is going to remain positive. He’s going to remain positive because he’s still going to have one more job interview. And before that job interview, Jeff’s mother is going to tell Jeff that he needs to wear a suit for the job interview. And Jeff’s going to know that his mother is correct but he is going to roll the dice. He’s going to dress casually for that last job interview. He is not going to wear a suit.

Well, Jeff’s going to have the last job interview and after the interview is finished, the person is going to offer the job to Jeff. Jeff’s going to get the job offer. He’s going to get the job. And the person who offers the job to Jeff is going to tell him that she does not care what clothes he wears as long as he’s a good lawyer and he’s also a good person.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this point of view lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it will happen in the future, I think I said 10 years from now, 10 years in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. For this story, I’m going to tell you the story from Jeff’s point of view. So you will have to believe that I am Jeff as I tell you this story. So let’s start.

Hello, my name is Jeff and I’m a penguin and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was a lawyer and I did not like to dress up. I liked to dress casually. Well, while I was in law school, I racked up a lot of debt so after I finished law school, I needed to find a job. But I didn’t worry about finding a job, no. I didn’t worry about finding a job because I was the best student in my law school.

Well, three weeks after I finished law school, I had my first job interview. I had a job interview with the Texas Law Group. And I was the best lawyer to interview for the position. But guess what? I didn’t get the job. I didn’t get the job because I didn’t wear a suit for the job interview.

Well, I was disappointed that I didn’t get the job but the following week I had four more job interviews. But guess what? I didn’t get any of those jobs either. I didn’t get those jobs because I didn’t dress up for the job interview. I dressed casually for those job interviews. And after the last of those four job interviews, my wallet was pickpocketed.

Well, I was down on my luck but I remained positive. I remained positive because I still had one more job interview. And before that job interview, my mother told me that I needed to wear a suit for the job interview. Well, I knew that my mother was right but I rolled the dice. I did not wear a suit for the job interview. Instead, I dressed casually.

And I had the job interview and after it was finished, I was offered the job. And the person who offered me the job told me that she didn’t care what clothes I wore as long as I was a good lawyer and I was also a good person.

Okay, well that’s the end of our third and final story in this point of view lesson. Now for that story, I told you the story as if Jeff was telling you the story. So you heard the story from Jeff’s point of view. And the story was told as if it had already happened. So the story was told as if it happened in the past. So now that we’re done with this lesson, now that we’re done with the stories for this lesson, we’re pretty much done with the lesson.

So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for seven days. And as you listen to each one of these stories, I just want you to remember the point of view the story is being told from and I just want you to understand what’s happening, alright? This will help you to learn grammar without memorizing grammar rules.

Alright then, that’s all for this point of view lesson so I’ll see you next time.
