The Election – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times but each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view for the story. So let’s start with our first story. This one I’m going to tell in the present, okay? So it’s going to be told as if it’s happening right now. So let’s begin.

There is an old man and his name is Ronald Dump and Ronald Dump is always grumpy. Well, Ronald Dump is rich and he looks down on anyone who’s not rich like him. And Ronald Dump lives in Beachville and he wants to be mayor of Beachville so he spends a lot of his money trying to become mayor.

Well, before the election, the people of Beachville believe that Jill Minton is going to become the mayor. And one reason they believe this is because the people of Beachville can’t stand Ronald Dump. But guess what happens? Ronald Dump becomes mayor. Yes, you see, he becomes mayor because his friends rig the election.

Well, just one week after Ronald Dump becomes mayor, he creates a terrible law and after that the people of Mountain City are not allowed to enter Beachville. Well, the people of Beachville are upset by this law. They do not like it. So guess what they do? They protest. The people of Beachville protest in front of Ronald Dump’s house.

Well, when Ronald Dump sees the protestors, he loses his temper and he throws eggs at them. So the police arrest Ronald Dump. They arrest him for throwing eggs at the protestors. Well, the people of Beachville do not want Ronald Dump to be mayor anymore so they agree to let him out of jail if he agrees not to be mayor.

Well, Ronald Dump does not want to be in jail anymore so he resigns as mayor of Beachville and the people of Beachville live happily ever after.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first story. In this version of the story, I told you the story as if it’s happening in the present, as if it’s happening right now is what that means. So next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s start.

22 years from now in the future, there will be an old man and his name is going to be Ronald Dump. And Ronald Dump is always going to be grumpy. Well, Ronald Dump is going to be rich and he’s going to look down on people who are not rich like him. Well, Ronald Dump is going to live in the town of Beachville and he’s going to want to be the mayor of Beachville so he’s going to spend a lot of his money trying to become mayor.

Well, before the election the people of Beachville are going to believe that Jill Minton will be mayor of Beachville. And one reason they’re going to believe this is because the people of Beachville are not going to be able to stand Ronald Dump. But guess what? Ronald Dump is going to become the mayor and he’s going to become the mayor because his friends are going to rig the election.

Well, just one week after Ronald Dump becomes mayor, he’s going to create a terrible law and after that the people of Mountain City are not going to be allowed to enter Beachville. Well, the people of Beachville are going to be very upset by this law. They are going to hate it. So they’re going to protest. Yes, the people of Beachville are going to protest in front of Ronald Dump’s house.

Well, Ronald Dump is going to see these protestors and he’s going to lose his temper. So he’s going to throw eggs at the protestors so the police are going to arrest Ronald Dump. They’re going to arrest Ronald Dump because he was throwing eggs at the protestors. Well, the people of Beachville are going to agree to let Ronald Dump out of jail if he agrees not to be mayor of Beachville anymore.

Well, Ronald Dump is not going to want to remain in jail so he’s going to resign as mayor of Beachville and the people of Beachville are going to live happily ever after.

Okay, so that was the second story in this lesson. Now in that story I told the story as if it was going to happen in the future, 22 years in the future. So there’s one more story in this lesson and in this story I’m going to tell you the story from Ronald Dump’s standpoint, okay? I’m going to tell you the story from Ronald Dump’s point of view. So you’re going to have to pretend that I am Ronald Dump. Okay, so here goes.

Hello, my name is Ronald Dump and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me in the past. You see, at that time I was always grumpy and I was rich and I looked down upon people who were not rich like me. And I lived in Beachville and I wanted to be the mayor of Beachville so I spent a lot of my money trying to become mayor.

Well, before the election the people of Beachville believed that Jill Minton was going to be elected mayor of Beachville. One reason was because the people of Beachville couldn’t stand me. But guess what happened? I was elected the mayor of Beachville and I was elected the mayor of Beachville because my friends rigged the election.

Well, one week after I became the mayor of Beachville, I created a terrible law and after that the people of Mountain City were not allowed to enter Beachville. Well, the people of Beachville did not like this law at all so they protested. The people of Beachville protested in front of my house.

Well, when I saw the protestors, I lost my temper and I threw eggs at the protestors. Well, after that the police arrested me. They arrested me because I threw eggs at the protestors. Well, the people of Beachville agreed to let me out of jail if I agreed not to be the mayor of Beachville anymore.

Well, I didn’t want to be in jail anymore so I resigned as mayor of Beachville and after that the people of Beachville lived happily ever after.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this point of view lesson. Now in that story I told you the story as if I was Ronald Dump. So now we’re at the end of this lesson so I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least one week. And as you listen to each story I just want you to think about the point of view of the story.

Think about what the story is boing told from, what point of view, excuse me. Is it being told as if it’s happening right now? Maybe it’s being told as if it’s happening in the future. Maybe Ronald Dump is telling the story and he’s telling it as if it’s already happened in the past, alright? And as you listen to each story you’ll see that the words change as the point of view changes.

Alright, then. Well, that’s all for this point of view lesson. I’ll see you next time.
