Money Hungry – Mini-Story Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English, and I’d like to welcome you to this mini-story lesson. Okay, I want to start today’s lesson by telling you about some of the idioms that you will hear me use in today’s story. So let’s start.

Okay, first is to be “the spitting image of someone.” So this one’s easy. If you are the spitting image of another person it just means that you look a lot like that person, okay? Let me give you an example.

When I saw Tommy at the library I thought he was his brother Mark because Tommy is the spitting image of Mark. Okay, so what I’m saying is when I saw Tommy at the library I thought he was his brother Mark because Tommy looks exactly like Mark. He looks a lot like him. Okay, so let’s move on to the next one.

The next one is a “full plate.” Okay, so if you have a full plate it means that you have a lot to do. Here’s an example for you. I asked Tonya to go to the movies with me on Monday but she was unable to go because she had a full plate that day. Okay, so what I’m saying is I asked Tonya to go to the movies with me on Monday but she was unable to go because she had a lot to do that day. She had a full plate that day.

Okay, so next is the “graveyard shift.” So the graveyard shift is the work shift that starts late at night and ends early the next morning, okay? So let me give you an example and I think you’ll understand this one a little better. John works the graveyard shift. He starts at 12:00 midnight and he finishes at 8:00 in the morning. John starts work very late at night and he finishes early in the morning. He starts work at 12:00 midnight and he finishes work at 8:00 the next morning. He works the graveyard shift.

Okay, so next is “money hungry.” So if you are money hungry it means that you always want more money, okay? You can kind of think of it as you’re hungry, not for food, but for money. Okay, you always want more money. Here’s an example. Even though John had $20 million, he still worked 15 hours a day because he was money hungry. Okay, so what I’m saying is even though John had $20 million, he still worked 15 hours a day because he always wanted more money. He was money hungry.

Okay, next I have a great idiom for you. It’s one that I hear people use a lot. It’s to have a “short temper.” So if you have a short temper it means that you get angry quickly, okay? So here’s an example. Pete used to get in a lot of fights because he used to have a short temper. Pete used to get in a lot of fights because he used to get angry quickly. He used to have a short temper.

Okay, so now I’m going to tell you a story but I’m also going to ask you a lot of questions as I tell you this story. So when I ask you a question I want you to answer that question quickly. Just tell me the first answer that you think of. And don’t worry about making a mistake. You’re going to listen to this lesson many times so you may make a mistake this time when you listen to this lesson but you will not make the same mistakes the next time you listen to it, probably not at least.

And when you answer these questions I want you to pretend you’re in a big room and the people who are far away from you have to hear you. Okay, so I want you to speak loudly and I want you to speak confidently. Okay, so it’s time for our story then. Let’s begin.

It can be anyone who you know. And I want you to use all of the idioms I taught you at the beginning of this lesson when you tell this story.

You know, idioms are a very popular form of communication in the English language so it’s important to learn as many of these idioms as you can and this lesson has five really good idioms. So I want you to learn these lessons very deeply and the best way to do that is to listen to this lesson many times. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days and I’m sure after the seven days you will probably know these idioms very, very well.

Okay, that’s all for this mini-story lesson then. I’ll see you next time.
