Pickles And Ice Cream – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in today’s lesson I’m going to tell you the same story that you heard in the mini-story lesson but I’m going to tell you this story from three different points of view. Okay, so let’s start with our first point of view story. In this story you’re going to as if it’s being told in the present. So you’re going to hear it as if it’s happening right now. So let’s start the story.

There is a woman and her name is Donna. And Donna has a sweet tooth and her favorite food is ice cream. But I want to tell you something else about Donna. Donna is pregnant. Yes she is!

Donna is pregnant and after Donna gets pregnant she wants to eat pickles with her ice cream.

Yes, in fact, Donna eats pickles and ice cream every day during the time that she is pregnant.

Well, one day Donna has a craving for pickles and ice cream. And she has pickles but she is out of ice cream. So Donna decides to go to the store to buy ice cream. And Donna does not own a car so she takes a taxi to the store. And the taxi driver’s name is Henry. So Henry drives Donna to the store. But unfortunately Donna is unable to buy ice cream at the store because the store is out of ice cream. So Donna still does not have ice cream to eat with her pickles.

Well, Donna has a brother and his name is John. And John also loves ice cream. Well, Donna still has a craving for pickles and ice cream so she decides to go to John’s house to get some ice cream. So Henry drives Donna to John’s house. But unfortunately Donna is unable to get ice cream at Henry’s house because Henry is not at home. Poor Donna. Donna still does not have any ice cream to eat with her pickles.

Well, Donna still has a craving for pickles and ice cream so she decides to go to an ice cream shop. And she tells Henry to drive her there. But while Henry is driving to the ice cream shop, something unexpected happens. Yes, something unexpected happens for sure. Donna starts to give birth in the taxi.

Well, when Donna starts to give birth in the taxi, Henry doesn’t know what to do. But then Henry remembers that there is a hospital just a stone’s throw away from them. So Henry drives Donna to the hospital and he drives very fast. And Donna arrives at the hospital before she gives birth.

And after Donna arrives at the hospital she goes inside the hospital and just 5 minutes later she gives birth to a beautiful baby boy.

And you know what she names the boy? Henry. Donna names the boy Henry in honor of Henry the taxi driver. Well, the day after Donna gives birth, Henry the tax driver visits Donna in the hospital. And he brings her a gift that he knows she loves, pickles and ice cream.

Okay, that brings us to the end of our first point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future, let’s say 15 years in the future this story happens. So let’s start the story.

There, in 15 years from now in the future, there will be a woman and her name is going to be Donna. And Donna is going to have a sweet tooth, yes. And her favorite food will be ice cream.

Well, Donna is going to be pregnant and after Donna gets pregnant she’s going to want to eat pickles with her ice cream. In fact, Donna is going to eat pickles and ice cream every day during the time that she is pregnant.

Well, one day Donna is going to have a craving for pickles and ice cream. And she is going to have pickles but she is going to be out of ice cream. So Donna is going to decide to go to the store to buy some ice cream. And Donna isn’t going to own a car so she’s going to take a taxi to the store. The taxi driver’s name will be Henry and Henry’s going to drive Donna to the store. But unfortunately Donna is going to be unable to buy ice cream at the store because the store is going to be out of ice cream. So Donna still will not have any ice cream to eat with her pickles. Poor Donna.

Well, Donna is still going to have a craving for pickles and ice cream and she still isn’t going to have any ice cream. So Donna is going to decide to go to John’s house to get some ice cream. So Henry is going to drive Donna to John’s house. But unfortunately Donna isn’t going to be able to get any ice cream at John’s house either because John isn’t going to be at home. So Donna will still have no ice cream to eat with her pickles. Poor Donna.

Well, Donna is still going to have a craving for pickles and ice cream so she’s going to decide to go to an ice cream shop. And she’s going to tell Henry to drive her there. But as Henry is driving to the ice cream shop, something unexpected is going to happen. Donna is going to start to give birth in Henry’s taxi. It’s true.

Well, as Donna starts to give birth, Henry is going to be nervous and he isn’t going to know what to do. But then Henry is going to remember that there is a hospital just a stone’s throw away from them. So Henry is going to drive Donna to the hospital and he’s going to drive very fast. And Donna’s going to arrive at the hospital before she gives birth. And then she’s going to go inside the hospital and just 5 minutes Donna is going to give birth to a beautiful baby boy.

And you know what she’s going to name the boy? Henry. She’s going to name the boy Henry in honor of Henry the taxi driver. Well, the day after Donna gives birth, Henry will visit Donna in the hospital. And Henry’s going to bring Donna a present. And it’s going to be a present that he knows she will love, pickles and ice cream.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. Now remember, our next story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen 15 years in the future. Okay, so for our last point of view story, I’m going to tell you the story from Donna’s point of view. So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m Donna, okay? And the story’s going to be told as if it has already happened in the past. Okay, let’s start the story.

Hello, my name is Donna and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time, I had a sweet tooth and my favorite food was ice cream. And I was pregnant. Yes, I was pregnant at that time. And after I got pregnant I wanted to eat pickles with my ice cream. In fact, I ate pickles and ice cream every day during the time that I was pregnant.

Well, one day I had a craving for pickles and ice cream. And I had pickles but I was out of ice cream. So I decided to go to the store to buy some ice cream. And I did not own a car so I took a taxi to the store. And the taxi driver’s name was Henry and Henry drove me to the store. But unfortunately I did not…I was not able to buy any ice cream at the store. Yes, I was not able to buy any ice cream at the store because the store was out of ice cream. So I still didn’t have any ice cream to eat with my pickles.

Well, I still had a craving for pickles and ice cream so I decided to go to an ice cream shop. And I told Henry to drive me there. But as Henry was driving to the ice cream shop, something unexpected happened. I began to give birth in the taxi. Yes, it’s true.

And when I began to give birth in the taxi, Henry didn’t know what to do. But then Henry remembered that there was a hospital just a stone’s throw away from us. So Henry drove me to the hospital and he drove very fast. And I arrived at the hospital before I gave birth. And after I arrived at the hospital, I went in side the hospital and 5 minutes later I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

And you know what I named the boy? Henry. I named the boy Henry. I named the boy Henry in honor of Henry the taxi driver. Well, the day after I gave birth, Henry the taxi driver visited me in the hospital and he brought me a gift that he knew I would love, pickles and ice cream.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. Now in that story you heard the story from Donna’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened. So I want you to listen to these stories every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each story I want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from.

And you will notice that the words in each story change, okay? The words change as the point of view changes. And the reason I want you to listen to these for at least seven days is because I want you to start to understand how the words change as the point of view changes; because this is a very powerful way for you to learn grammar without having to study those boring grammar rules.

Okay, well that’s the end of this point of view story lesson. I’ll see you next time.
