Making A Living – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times, but each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view for you. So first, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start there.

There is a monkey and his name is John and John makes a living as an accountant. And every week his take-home pay is $1,087. And after John’s 33rd birthday, he does not want to be an accountant anymore. You see, every day at work he’s bored stiff. Now after work, he’s excited. He’s not bored stiff. After work, he’s excited because every night he plays guitar with his band.

Well, John loves to play guitar. It’s actually one of his favorite things in the world. But he only earns $27 each time he plays with his band so he does not earn enough money by playing guitar to pay all of his bills. But down the road he hopes to make a living playing guitar.

Well, one night John is at a bar and he’s playing guitar with the band and Barack Obama is also at the bar. Yes, it’s true! And Barack Obama brings his guitar with him to the bar. And he asks John if he can play guitar with the band. Well, of course, John says yes. But unfortunately, then there’s a problem.

You see, Barack Obama starts to play guitar and he’s terrible at it. He is probably the worst guitarist that John has ever heard. Well, John is a very nice man and he doesn’t want Barack Obama to be embarrassed so John gives Barack Obama some pointers about playing guitar. And after he does that, Barack Obama starts to play the guitar beautifully.

It’s an amazing transformation. And Barack Obama is so happy at this that he offers John a job to be his personal guitar teacher and he offers to pay him $2,011 in take-home pay every week. Well, John is so happy that the next day he quits his job as an accountant because he finally is able to make a living playing guitar.

Okay, so that’s our first story in this lesson. Now in that story I told you that story as if it’s happening in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s start the story.

Eleven years from now in the future, there will be a monkey and his name is going to be John. And John is going to make a living as an accountant. And every week his take-home pay is going to be $1,087. Well, after his 33rd birthday, John is not going to want to be an accountant anymore. You see, every day at work John’s going to be bored stiff. Now after work, he is not going to be bored stiff. After work, he’s going to be excited. Yes, it’s true. He’s going to be excited because every day after work John is going to play guitar with his band.

Well, John is going to love playing guitar. In fact, it’s going to be his favorite thing in all of the world. But he’s only going to be able to make $27 each time he plays with the band so he isn’t going to be able to pay his bills just by playing guitar. But down the road John is going to hope to make a living playing guitar.

Well, one night John’s going to be at a bar and he’s going to be playing guitar with his band. And guess what? Barack Obama is going to go to the bar that night and he’s going to bring his guitar with him. And Barack Obama’s going to ask John if he can play with the band. Of course, John’s going to say yes. But then there’s going to be a problem.

Because Barack Obama is going to start to play guitar and he’s going to be terrible at it. So John isn’t going to want Barack Obama to be embarrassed and he’s going to give Barack Obama some pointers about playing guitar. And after that, Barack Obama is suddenly going to play some amazing guitar.

He’s going to turn into an amazing guitarist just after John gives him the pointers. Well, Barack Obama’s going to be so happy by this that he’s going to offer John a job. He’s going to offer John a job as his personal guitar teacher and he’s going to offer John take-home pay of $2,011 every week. Well, John’s going to be so happy that the next day he’s going to quit his job as an accountant because it’s finally going to be the first time that he is able to make a living playing guitar.

Okay, so that’s our second story in this lesson. Now in that story I told you the story as if it was going to happen in the future, I think I said 11 years in the future, but it was definitely in the future. Now I have one more story for you in this lesson and this time I’m going to tell you the story from John’s point of view. Okay, so you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a monkey named John for this story. So let’s start.

Hello, my name is John and I’m a monkey and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I made a living as an accountant. And my take-home pay each week was $1,087. Well, after my 33rd birthday, I did not want to be an accountant anymore. You see, every day at work I was bored stiff. After work, I wasn’t bored stiff though.

You see, after work I was excited because every day after work, I played guitar with my band and I loved playing guitar. It was my favorite thing in the world to do. But unfortunately, I only earned $27 every time I played guitar with my band so I was unable to pay my bills just from playing the guitar. But down the road I always hoped to be able to make a living playing guitar.

Well, one day I was at a bar and I was playing guitar with my band. And Barack Obama was also at the bar and he brought his guitar to the bar with him. Well, he asked me if he could play guitar with the band so, of course, I said yes. But then there was a problem. You see, Barack Obama started to play the guitar and he was terrible. Well, I felt bad for him and I didn’t want him to be embarrassed so I gave him some pointers about playing the guitar and then he started to play the guitar beautifully.

I’d never seen anything like it. And he always had wanted to play the guitar very well so when he finally was able to play the guitar well, he was so happy. He was so happy that he offered me a job as his personal guitar teacher and he offered to pay me $2,087 take-home pay every week. Well, I was very happy when Barack Obama offered me the job so the next day I quit my job as an accountant because I was finally able to make a living playing guitar.

Okay, well that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. Now that story was told from John’s point of view, John the monkey’s point of view. So we’ve arrived at the end of this lesson and I really want you to learn this material deeply. I want you to understand how the story changes as the point of view changes. And what I mean by that is I want you to understand how the words change when I tell you the story as a result of the point of view changing.

So I just want you to listen to these lessons every day, or this lesson, excuse me, every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each of these stories each day, I just want you to try and concentrate on what’s happening in the story. Just try and understand what’s going on, okay? And try and understand

the time that it’s taking place and you will find as you listen to these stories, more and more you will start to learn the material deeper and deeper and deeper.

Alright? Alright, well then that’s the end of this lesson so I’ll see you next time. Bye-bye.
