The Magic Carpet Ride – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weis and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story that you heard in the mini-story lesson. But this time I’m going to tell you that story from three different pointes of view. First I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start the story.

There is a woman and her name is Jane. And Jane wants to buy a pink piano. Now the piano costs $2,134 but Jane cannot buy the piano because she’s strapped for cash. Well, Jane needs money to purchase the pink piano so she tries to get a job. And Jane tries to get a job for two weeks. She looks for a job for two weeks but she’s unable to get one.

Jane is unable to get a job because she never graduated from high school. Yeah, you see Jane dropped out of high school when she was just 13 years old. So no one wants to give her a job.

So Jane goes home and she cries. She cries because she’s unable to get a job.

Well, the next day Jane’s Uncle Manny passes away. And Jane is very sad after Uncle Manny passes away because she loves him very much. But even though Jane is very sad, the next day she pays her last respects to her Uncle Manny.

Well, about a week later, Jane’s mother calls her and she tells Jane that her Uncle Manny wanted her to have his carpet when he passed away, and Jane’s mother has the carpet at her house. So Jane drives to her mother’s house to get the carpet. But this is no ordinary carpet. It’s a magic carpet. Yes, the reason it’s a magic carpet is because the carpet can fly.

Well, after Jane gets the carpet she learns how to fly it. And then she starts a new business. The business is named The Magic Carpet Ride and Jane charges $197 for a ride on the magic carpet.

Well, every day Jane has a lot of customers so she makes money hand over fist. And one week after Jane starts her business she purchases the pink piano.

And the business continues to make money hand over fist. So every day Jane thanks her Uncle Manny by placing flowers on his grave.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future.

So let’s start the story.

Thirty-two years from now in the future, there will be a woman and her name will be Jane. And Jane’s going to want to purchase a pink piano. Now the piano will cost $2,134. But Jane will be unable to purchase the piano because she’s going to be strapped for cash. Well, Jane will need money to purchase the pink piano so she’s going to try to get a job. And Jane will look for a job for two weeks but she will be unable to get one.

Yes, Jane will be unable to get a job because she will never have graduated from high school.

You see, Jane will have dropped out of high school at age 13. So no one will give her a job. So Jane’s going to home and she’s going to cry. She’s going to cry because she’s going to be unable to get a job.

Well, unfortunately the next day Jane’s Uncle Manny is going to pass away. And Jane is going to love her Uncle Manny very much so she’s going to be very sad after he passes away. But even though Jane is going to be very sad, the next day she’s going to pay her last respects to her Uncle Manny.

Well, about a week later, Jane’s mother is going to call Jane and she’s going to tell Jane that her Uncle Manny wanted her to have his carpet after he passed away. And Jane’s mother is going to have the carpet at her house. So Jane is going to drive to her mother’s house to get the carpet.

But this will be no ordinary carpet. It’s going to be a magic carpet. It’s going to be a magic carpet because it’s going to be able to fly.

So Jane is going to get the carpet and she’s going to learn how to fly it. And then she’s going to start a new business. The business will be named The Magic Carpet Ride and she’s going to charge $197 for a ride on the magic carpet. Well, Jane will have a lot of customers every day so she’s going to make money hand over fist. Well, one week after Jane starts her new business she’s going to purchase the pink piano.

And the business will continue to make money hand over fist. So Jane is going to thank her Uncle Manny every day by placing flowers on his grave.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. In that story I told you the story as if it was going to happen sometime in the future. Okay, so we have one more point of view story. In this story I’m going to tell you the story from Jane’s point of view. So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m Jane.

And the story will be told as if it’s already happened in the past. Okay then, let’s start the story.

Hello, I’m a woman and my name is Jane. And I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see at that time I wanted to purchase a pink piano. And the piano cost $2,134. But I was unable to purchase the piano because I was strapped for cash. Well, I needed money to purchase the pink piano so I tried to get a job. And I looked for a job for two weeks but I was unable to get one.

I was unable to get a job because I dropped out of high school. Yes, I did not graduate from high school. I dropped out of high school when I was just 13 years old. So no one wanted to give me a job. So I went home and I cried. I cried because I was unable to get a job. No one would give me a job.

Well, the next day was very difficult for me because my Uncle Manny passed away. And I loved my Uncle Manny very much so I was very sad when he passed away. But even though I was very sad, the next day I paid my last respects to my Uncle Manny.

Well, about a week later, my mother called me and she told me that my Uncle Manny wanted me to have his carpet after he passed away. And the carpet was at my mother’s house. So I drove to my mother’s house to get the carpet. And this was no ordinary carpet though. It was a magic carpet. It was a magic carpet because it could fly.

So after I got the carpet I learned how to fly it. And then I started a new business. The business was named The Magic Carpet Ride and I charged $197 for every ride on the magic carpet. And every day I had a lot of customers so I made money hand over fist. Well, one week after I started my new business I purchased the pink piano.

And the business continued to make money hand over fist. So every day I thank my Uncle Manny by placing flowers on his grave.

Okay, so that brings us to the end of our last point of view story. In that story I told you the story from Jane’s point of view. And I told you the story as if it had already happened. So that means we’ve come to the end of this point of view lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each story, I want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from.

And as you listen to these stories each time you will begin to understand how the words change as the point of view changes.

Okay, well that’s the end of this point of view lesson. I’ll see you next time.
