Full Engagement – Interactive Lesson B

Okay, hello again. Welcome to part B. Continuing now with the Tony Robbins’ speech.

Most people in a tech world say oh yeah, I know that story, I know that thing. If you’re not doing it you don’t know shit

Some more slang and here he makes a strong word. Before he said frickin’, which is kind of polite, but now he says the word shit, which is not polite and again it adds power, emotional power that’s why we say these words– fuck, shit. They’re a little rude but they add more emotional power, emotional intensity. That’s how we use those words usually. So he’s saying you don’t know shit. This is a slang phrase, it means you don’t know anything. You don’t know anything. You know nothing. You don’t know shit. So he’s saying if you’re not doing it you really don’t know. You say you know something, oh I know how to do that. Oh yeah, I know, I know, but if you don’t really do it in your life, if you’re not taking action then you don’t really know. You don’t know shit. You don’t know anything.

You understand

You only understand. You understand but you don’t know deeply.

And understanding and $3 will almost get you a Starbucks.

Then another joke, understanding and $3 will almost get you a Starbucks coffee.

He doesn’t say coffee but, what does that mean? Understanding and $3 will almost get you a Starbucks. Starbucks coffee is more than $3, so it means you have $3 and understanding, understanding is worth zero, zero. So it’s just saying understanding is worthless. Only deep knowledge and mastery is useful.

If you’re gonna master something you need to get the repetition where you get it in your body

If you’re going to master something you need to get the repetition where you get it in your body

Get it in your body it means it becomes automatic, it becomes automatic, it becomes natural, effortless and automatic. Like Effortless English.

And you bring emotion to it. And enough emotion and enough repetition

You bring emotion to it, it means you add emotion to the repetitions and with enough emotion and enough repetition

It gets in your body and now it becomes physical mastery

It gets in your body and now it becomes physical mastery Where you don’t think about it and you just do it.

Then you don’t think about it you just do it. That’s true mastery

Just like with English, while you’re still thinking about grammar rules, you’re still thinking about vocabulary, you’re not a master yet. When you’re a master you don’t think. You don’t translate, you just do it. You just speak English, you don’t think about it at all.

Mastery is tying your shoes.

Mastery is tying your shoes.

You can tie your shoes without thinking.

Most of you can do this, chew on some gum and send a text simultaneously.

Most of you can do chew gum and send a text on your phone simultaneously.

Simultaneously, at the same time, right you don’t think about it.

Not some people, some people need their tongue out while they’re doing it but you get the idea.

Not some people, some people need their tongue out while they’re doing it, another joke, but you get the idea.

He’s like you get the idea, you understand.

If you do something enough and you’re confident enough, you’re certain enough that’s in your body that’s mastery.

If you do something enough and you’re confident enough, you’re certain enough that’s in your body that’s mastery.

So he’s saying all skills become almost physical.

I’d like to see if we couldn’t get to a different level of mastery in this

I’d like to see if we can get to a different level of mastery in this, if we couldn’t get.

What I’m gonna ask you to do,

I’m gonna ask you to do and then he changes, by the way if you…

By the way if you listen and take notes, just write those notes down

If you take notes just write those notes down…

Type them in or do whatever you do, research shows. Or type them in whatever you do.

Research shows that you’ll retain about 40-50% of what’s been said.

You’ll retain about 40-50% of what has been said, what’s been said.

You’ll retain, here retain means to keep, to remember. It really means remember, keep in your mind, you’ll retain. So if you take notes you’ll retain more. He said before no notes you’ll retain 10%, with notes you’ll retain 40-50%.

For the future I highly encourage you to do that. Now might be a good time.

For the future I highly encourage you (he makes a mistake highly engage, then he says highly encourage you) to do that. Now might be a good time.

Then the third, the third most powerful one is if you physically engage your body.

Then the third, the third most powerful one is if you physically engage your body.

So use your body that’s part of the power of notes, you’re actually using your body to write. So you’re involving your body, engaging your body. It creates stronger memories.

If I ask you a question yell back the answer

If I ask you a question yell back the answer

In a few minutes I’m gonna ask you to actively engage at a different, engage with each other,

In a few minutes I’m gonna ask you to actively engage with each other, talk to each other.

Do some crazy things, things you wouldn’t normally do.

Do some crazy things, things you wouldn’t normally do.

What that does is it brings up engagement 80-90% retention

What that does is it brings up engagement 80-90% retention

Retention here means, it’s a noun, so to retain is the verb, the noun is retention. It means memory. So he’s saying if you actively engage, if you strong engage, strongly use your body by shouting, by moving, then your memory will go up to 80 or 90%.

Because now it’s not just a thought or a write it’s a feeling in your body as well.

Because now it’s not just a thought or a write, something you wrote, it’s a feeling in your body also.

And if you do that you’re gonna retain it.

And if you do that you’re gonna retain it, you’re going to keep it, remember it.

Who’s up for doing more and holding onto more say I?

Who’s up for doing more say I?

Up for means who will join me? Who wants to?

I’m gonna ask you to do a couple things. One is if I ask you a question please yell out the answer. You’re already doing that,

I’m gonna ask you to do a couple things. One is if I ask you a question please yell out the answer. You’re already doing that,

You’re being very kind but don’t be kind anymore

You’re being very kind but don’t be kind anymore

Do it with more passion and intensity

Do it with more passion and intensity

Do it with more power is what he’s saying. So he’s like don’t just do it in a nice, kind of boring way, you need to do it in a very strong and passionate way.

Onto the next part…

Because I’m not gonna ask you questions you don’t know the answer to, because I want you to feel good about yourself.

Because I’m not going to ask you questions you don’t know the answer to, because I want you to feel good about yourself.

Another little joke.

But if you yell out the answer you’ll activate your body’s nervous system.

But if you yell out the answer you’ll activate your body’s nervous system.

To activate means to turn on. You’ll turn on your nervous system, your brain, your nerves.

Make sense? The more you activate the more energy you’ll have.

Make sense? The more you activate the more energy you’ll have.

We live in a passive society

We live in a passive society

Not active, passive means not active.

And if we’re gonna engage– by the way, the companies that engage,

By the way, the companies that engage

The companies that have records of 24, the top 25%

Who have records who are at the top 24-25%?

In the country

In the country

Highest level engagement of employees

Highest level engagement of employees

Are companies like: Google, companies like Sales Force, companies like Apple, companies like Facebook– and by the way, guess what all the research shows?

Twenty-two percent more profitability

They’re 22% more profitable. Make more money or profit than companies with less employee engagement.

Almost one for one. For every percentage of increased engagement you almost get an increase of profitability

It’s kind of like a one for one. For every percentage of increased engagement you almost get an equal increase in profitability

But I would argue you get that in your personal life as well.

He’s saying, I would argue you get that in your personal life as well.

So it’s not just in business, also in your personal life. The more you are engaged the more profit, the more happiness, the more success you have in your life.

The more engaged you are the more the other person will become engaged.

The more engaged you are the more the other person will become engaged.

You want to get someone engaged? You get engaged.

You want to get someone engaged? Someone to be excited, to be focused, to really focus and care about your relationship, then you get engaged first. Think about it.

Think about it, everyone in this room is a leader, what’s our job to do as a leader?

Think about it, everyone in this room is a leader, what’s our job to do as a leader?

Our job is maximize resources.

Our job is maximize resources.

So resources are the positive things you have and you need to maximize those. It means you need to use those strengths, those resources, those strengths the most, the most possible, as much as possible.

How do we take whatever resource and get more out of it?

How do we take whatever resource, whatever strength, whatever positive thing we have and get more out of it, get more useful things from it, get more results from it?

Ourselves, other people,

Ourselves, other people; these are examples of kinds of resources, strengths.

Our economics, our business, our technology that’s the job of a leader, but you can’t maximize resources if you don’t have full engagement.

Our economics, our business, our technology that’s the job of a leader, but you can’t maximize resources if you don’t have full engagement.

So I’d like to see if we couldn’t increase that.

So I’d like to see if we couldn’t increase that.

So here using the negative, I’d like to see if we couldn’t increase that. It’s kind of a softer way to suggest something. Sometimes we can use the negative like that, but it’s a soft way of suggesting. It really means the same as, I’d like to see if we could do that. I’d like to see if we couldn’t do that. I’d like to see if we could do that. Pretty much the same meaning for those two. The negative doesn’t really mean anything here, it’s just a soft suggestion. It’s softer.

One simple way of doing that, increasing that engagement is to start with us

Another way of doing that, of increasing that engagement is to start with us, to start with ourselves.

Are you gonna engage other people if you’re not engaged yes or no?

And by the way, are you gonna, are you going to, engage other people if you’re not engaged yes or no? Are you going to activate other people if you are not activated? Are you going to energize other people if you are not energized? Are you going to inspire other people if you are not inspired? Are you going to motivate other people, if you are not motivated? No.

No. Yes or no? No!

Are you gonna be able to touch other people if you’re not touched? Are you going to be able to touch other people if you’re not touched?

Here touch, of course you know the direct meaning of touched, but here touched means to make someone emotional, to affect them emotionally, to make them feel good emotions. To touch someone, to make them feel happy, to make them feel trust, that means to touch someone.

Are you gonna move other people if you’re not moved? No.

Are you going to move other people if you’re not moved? No.

Again, this is slang. Here moved means motivate. Sometimes we use this word moved. To move someone means to motivate them.

So, by the way, here’s the problem.

By the way, here’s the problem.

How many of you wake up, you have certain days you wake up and you think to yourselves,

How many of you wake up, you have certain days you wake up and you think to yourselves,

Today I don’t want to talk to any people!?

Today I don’t want to talk to any people!?

He’s joking again, but he’s saying how many of you wake up in a bad mood, you don’t want to talk to anyone, you don’t want to be a leader, you don’t want to be engaged.

Who in this room has days like this where you don’t want to talk to anybody, say I?

Who in this room has days like this where you don’t want to talk to anybody, say I?

Come on, say it with some energy, I!

Come on, say it with some energy, I!

But, as a professional you gotta do that most times

But, as a professional you’ve got to do that most times

Got to means, gotta means much. You gotta do that, you must do that sometimes.

And if you fake it do people feel it?

And if you fake it do people feel it?

If you pretend, to fake means to pretend, do people feel it? Can they feel that you’re not really engaged?

Yes. So I want to show you some ways to change it.

I want to show you some ways to change it.

I’ll teach you in the commentary.

By the way, here’s the reward of engagement.

By the way, here’s the reward of engagement.

If you can become a person and engage others, you will now become an extraordinary leader

If you can become a person and engage others, you will now become an extraordinary leader, not a mediocre or good one.

Extraordinary means amazing, fantastic! So if you can learn how to engage other people, you know, get them fully engaged, fully involved, you will be an amazing leader, a great leader.

Not a mediocre or good one.

Not a mediocre or good one.

Mediocre means so-so, kind of average, not that great, not terrible not great, mediocre. You won’t be a mediocre leader if you learn how to do this and you won’t be a bad leader.

Whew. Okay then that is the end of part B. You might need to practice this a few times. Listen to part A several times. Listen to part B, he’s very, very fast. In part C we’re going to review

some of the vocabulary and I will ask you questions. When I ask you questions you will shout, you will be fully engaged with your answers.

See you in part C.
