##Underdog – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is Big Nate. And Big Nate is a big man. He’s eight feet tall and he weighs 309 pounds. And Big Nate is a basketball player. He plays basketball for the Houston Rockets and he’s a very good basketball player. In fact, he’s the best basketball player in America. But he tells everyone that he’s the best basketball player in the world. He tells people this because he has a big head.

Well, one year the Houston Rockets play the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game.

And the Los Angeles Lakers have a very good team. They have 14 players on the team but 7 of those players are great players. Now, the Houston Rockets also have 14 players but only 1 of their players is a great player, and that’s Big Nate.

So the Houston Rockets are the underdog in the championship game. But even though they’re the underdog, Big Nate guarantees a victory for his team. Well, unfortunately the Houston Rockets do not win the championship game and the game is not even close. The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Houston Rockets by 57 points. And after the game, all of the players on the Los Angeles Lakers remember that Big Nate had guaranteed a victory for his team. So after the Houston Rockets lose the game, the players on the Los Angeles Lakers rub Big Nate’s nose in it.

Well, after the championship game, Big Nate is upset. He’s upset because his team has lost the championship and the game has left a bad taste in his mouth. So one week after the game, Big Nate meets with his teammates in New York. And he tells his teammates that they have to win a championship the next year and all of his teammates agree with him.

Well, the next year the Houston Rockets start by losing the first 11 games that they play in. And when Big Nate tells everybody that his team is still going to win the championship, they laugh at him. And Big Nate does not like to be laughed at so from that moment on, he plays with a chip on his shoulder. And it’s a good thing that he plays with his shoulder because after that the Houston Rockets win 33 consecutive games.

Well, later that year the Houston Rockets play the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship again, for the second year in a row. But the result is different this time because the Houston Rockets win the game. And after the game, no one ever laughs at Big Nate ever again.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first point of view story in this lesson. Now, in that story I told you the story as if it is happening in the present right now. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it will happen in the future, let’s say 32 years in the future. So let’s start.

32 years from now, in the future, there will be a man and his name is going to be Big Nate. And Big Nate is going to be a big man. He’s going to be eight feet tall and he’s going to weigh 309 pounds, very big. And Big Nate is going to be a basketball player and he will play for the Houston Rockets, that will be the team he’s going to play for. And Big Nate is going to be the best basketball player in America but he’s going to tell everybody he’s the best basketball player in the world. He’s going to do this because Big Nate is going to have a big head.

Well, one year the Houston Rockets are going to play the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. And the Los Angeles are going to have an excellent team. There will be 14 players on their team and 7 of them are going to be very good players, or great players even. And in comparison, the Houston Rockets are also going to have 14 players but only 1 of their players is going to be great, Big Nate.

So the Houston Rockets are going to be the underdog in the championship game. But even though they’re going to be the underdogs, Big Nate is going to guarantee a victory for his team.

Well, unfortunately Big Nate is going to be wrong. The Houston Rockets are going to lose to the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game and the game isn’t going to be close. They’re going to lose by 57 points. And after the game, the players on the Los Angeles Lakers are going to rub Big Nate’s nose in it.

Well, after the game, Big Nate is going to be upset because his team will have lost the championship. And the game is going to leave a bad taste in Big Nate’s mouth. So one week after the game, Big Nate is going to meet with his teammates in New York and he’s going to tell his teammates that they have to win the championship the next year. And all of his teammates are going to agree with him.

Well, the next year the Houston Rockets are going to lose the first 11 games that they play. But Big Nate is still going to tell everybody that his team is going to win the championship so people are going to laugh at him. And Big Nate is not going to like it when people laugh at him so from that moment on, Big Nate is going to play with a chip on his shoulder. And it’s going to be a good Underdog – Point Of View Lesson

thing that he plays with a chip on his shoulder because after that the Houston Rockets are going to win 33 consecutive games.

Well, later that year the Houston Rockets will play the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. It will be the second year in a row that these two teams will play in the championship game. But the result will be different that year because the Houston Rockets are going to win the game. They’re going to beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. And after the game, no one is ever going to laugh at Big Nate ever again.

Okay, so that was our second point of view story in this lesson. In that story, I told you the story as if it will happen in the future, okay? So I have one more story for you in this lesson. In this next story, I’m going to tell you the story from Big Nate’s point of view, okay? And the story’s going to be told as it has already happened in the past. So let’s start the story.

Hello, my name is Big Nate and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at the time of this story, I played basketball for the Houston Rockets and I was a big man. I was eight feet tall and I weighed 309 pounds. And when I played for the Houston Rockets I was the best player in America, the best basketball player in America, that is.

But I told everybody that I was the best basketball player in the world because I had a big head at that time.

Well, one year my team, the Houston Rockets, played the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. And the Houston Rockets had 14 players on the team but only 1 great player and that was me. Now the Los Angeles Lakers also had 14 players on their team but they had 7 great players. So the Houston Rockets had 1 great player, the Los Angeles Lakers, 7 great players.

So the Houston Rockets were the underdog in the championship game. But even though my team, the Houston Rockets, were the underdog, I guaranteed a victory for the team. Well, unfortunately my prediction was wrong because the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Houston Rockets, my team, in the championship game and the game wasn’t even close. The Lakers beat my team by 57 points. And after the game, the players on the Los Angeles Lakers rubbed my nose in it.

Well, after the game, I was upset because my team had lost the championship. And the game left a bitter taste…excuse me, the game left a bad taste in my mouth. So one week after the game, met with my teammates. I met with them in New York and I told my teammates that the next year we had to win the championship and they all agreed with me.

Well, to start the next year the Houston Rockets, my team, lost the first 11 games we played in.

But I still believed that we were going to win a championship so I told everybody that we were still going to win the championship and everybody laughed at me. Well, I didn’t like to be laughed at so from that moment on, I played with a chip on my shoulder. And it’s a good thing that I played with a chip on my shoulder because after that the Houston Rockets, my team, won 33 consecutive games.

Well, later that year the Houston Rockets played the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. And it was the second year in a row that my team, the Houston Rockets, played the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. But the result was different that year because the Houston Rockets beat the Los Angeles Lakers. And after my team won the championship, no one ever laughed at me again.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. Now in that last story, I told you the story from Big Nate’s point of view and I told you the story as if it was happening in the past. So that means we’re at the end of this lesson. Now I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each one of these stories, I want you to just understand what’s happening in the story.

And I also want you to be sure that you think of the point of view the story is being told from, okay? And you’ll hear that some of the words in the story change as the point of view changes.

So when you listen to this every day for at least every seven days, you’ll start to understand how the words change, okay?

That’s why I want you to listen at least seven days. I want you to learn this material deeply.

Alright then, that’s the end of this lesson so I’ll see you next time.
