##Cheapskate – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times but each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view. So first I want to tell you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. So let’s start.
There is a bird and his name is Billy and Billy loves to play tennis and Billy is quite good at tennis.
Actually, he is the best tennis player in New York. But, unfortunately, he has a problem. No one wants to play tennis with Billy. No one wants to play tennis with Billy because Billy is cocky.
Well, Billy has a daughter and her name is Michelle. And Michelle is just 11 years old and Michelle is unlike her father in that she does not like tennis, no. She likes new clothes. But, unfortunately, she doesn’t have any new clothes. All of the clothes she has are hand-me-downs. She only has hand-me-downs because her father, Billy, is a cheapskate.
Well, one day Michelle asks Billy to buy her a new dress. And Billy does not want to buy a new dress for Michelle because he’s a cheapskate. But he does want to have someone to play tennis against so Billy tells Michelle that he will buy her a new dress if she beats him in a game of tennis.
So Billy and Michelle agree to play tennis one week later.
Well, Michelle really wants to beat her father, Billy, in a game of tennis because she wants a new dress. So every day she practices. She practices for 11 hours each day. Now Billy does not practice at all. You see, Billy thinks that the game of tennis against Michelle is going to be a walk in the park for him so he doesn’t practice at all. In fact, the day before he plays the game of tennis against Michelle, he drinks like a fish.
Well, the next day Billy and Michelle play tennis. But Billy is only able to play for 10 minutes and then he has to quit. He quits because he gets sick. You see, Billy gets sick because the day before, he drank like a fish. So Michelle wins the game of tennis against her father, Billy, and the next day she wears a new dress.
Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. Now, for that story, I told you the story as if it is happening in the present, right now. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future, okay? So let’s start.21 years from now in the future, there will be a bird and his name’s going to be Billy. And Billy is going to love to play tennis and he’s going to be very good at playing tennis. In fact, he’s going to be the best tennis player in New York. But no one is going to want to play tennis against Billy because Billy is going to be cocky.
Well, Billy is going to have a daughter and her name is going to be Michelle. And Michelle is going to be 11 years old and Michelle isn’t going to love tennis like her father, no. Michelle is going to love new clothes. But, unfortunately, she isn’t going to have any new clothes. She’s only going to have hand-me-downs. You see, the only reason she’s going to have hand-medowns is because her father is going to be a cheapskate.
Well, one day Michelle is going to ask her father to buy her a new dress. And her father, Billy, is not going to want to buy her a new dress because, remember, he’s going to be a cheapskate. But he is going to want to have someone to play tennis against. So he’s going to tell Michelle that he will buy her a new dress if she beats him in a game of tennis. So Michelle and Billy are going to agree to play a game of tennis one week later.
Well, Michelle is really going to want to beat her father in that game of tennis because she’s going to want to have a new dress. So she’s going to practice every day. Every day she’s going to practice for 11 hours. Now, Billy isn’t going to practice at all. You see, Billy is going to believe that the game of tennis against Michelle will be a walk in the park for him. So he isn’t going to practice at all. And the day before he plays the game of tennis against Michelle, he’s going to drink like a fish.
Well, Billy and Michelle are going to play the game of tennis one day and Billy is only going to be able to play for 10 minutes and then he’s going to quit. You see, he’s going to quit because he’s going to be sick and he’s going to be sick because he will have drank like a fish the day before he played the game of tennis. So Michelle is going to win the game of tennis against her father, Billy, and the next day she’s going to wear a new dress.
Okay, so that’s the second story in this lesson. Now, in that story, I told you the story as if it will happen in the future, I think I said 21 years in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson and in this next story, I’m going to tell you the story from Billy’s point of view. And I’m going to tell you the storyas if it has happened already in the past, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend I’m a bird named Billy when I tell this story, alright? Alright, so let’s start the next story.
Hello, my name is Billy and I’m a bird. And I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time, I loved to play tennis and I was a very good tennis player. Actually, I was the best tennis player in New York but, unfortunately, no one wanted to play tennis against me. No one wanted to play tennis against me because I was cocky.
Well, at that time I had a daughter and her name was Michelle. And at the time of the story, Michelle was only 11 years old and Michelle didn’t like to play tennis. Michelle liked new clothes.
But she only had hand-me-downs, she did not have any new clothes. You see, Michelle only had hand-me-downs because I was a cheapskate.
Well, one day Michelle asked me to buy her a new dress. And I didn’t want to buy her a new dress because I was a cheapskate. But I did want someone to play tennis against so I told Michelle that I would buy her a new dress if she beat me in a game of tennis. So Michelle and I agreed to play tennis one week later.
Well, Michelle really wanted to beat me in the game of tennis because she wanted a new dress.
So every day she practiced. She practiced 11 hours each day. I didn’t practice at all. You see, I thought that the game of tennis against Michelle was going to be a walk in the park for me. So I didn’t practice at all and the day before the game of tennis against Michelle, I drank like a fish.
Well, Michelle and I played tennis that day and I was only able to play for 10 minutes and then I had to quit. You see, I had to quit because I was sick. I was sick because the day before the match, I drank like a fish. So Michelle won the game of tennis against me and the next day she wore a brand new dress.
Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this point of view lesson. Now, in that story, I told you the story from Billy’s point of view and the story was told as if it had happened already in the past, okay? So now we’ve reached the end of this lesson so I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to this lesson, I want you to just understand the point of view that the story is being told from as you listen to each story, okay? And you’ll notice that the words in the story change as the point of view changes. Now, all I want you to do though is just try and understand what’s happening with the story, okay?
Just relax, listen to the story and understand what’s happening. This is a really powerful way for you to learn grammar without studying grammar rules and that’s why I want you to make sure you learn this material deeply. So please, listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.
Alright, I look forward to seeing you next time. Have a good day.
