Cheapskate – Mini-Story Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss, and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this mini-story lesson. Okay, I want to start by telling you about some of the idioms that you will hear me use in the story. So let’s start there.

Okay, first is to be “cocky.” Okay, so if you are cocky, it means that you’re arrogant. It means that you think you’re better than other people. Let me give you an example. No one wanted to play golf with Jimmy because Jimmy was cocky. Okay, so what I’m saying is no one wanted to play golf with Jimmy because Jimmy was arrogant. Jimmy thought he was better than other people, okay? He was cocky.

Okay, so next is a “hand-me-down.” So a hand-me-down is a piece of clothing that belonged to someone else before you received it, okay? And it’s not usually something that you buy, it’s usually given to you.

And sometimes the term hand-me-down can refer to something other than a piece of clothing, but most of the time it refers to clothing. And in the story, when I use this idiom, I will be referring to a piece of clothing. Let me give you an example to help you understand this one and I think that then you’ll, really, it’ll be clear to you what it means. When I was younger, I never had any new clothes. All of my clothes were hand-me-downs from my older brother, John. Okay, so what I’m saying is when I was younger, I never had any new clothes. All of my clothes were clothes that I received from my brother John. They were clothes that belonged to my brother John before me, okay, my older brother John. They were handme-downs.

Okay, so next is a “cheapskate.” So a cheapskate is a person who’s cheap. And what I mean by that is a person who does not like to spend money. Let me give you an example. John never bought presents for his children because he was a cheapskate. Okay, so what I’m saying is John never bought presents for his children because he was cheap. He did not like to spend money. He was a cheapskate.

Okay, so next is one that I really like, it’s a “walk in the park.” So if something is a walk in the park, it means that it’s very easy, it’s simple, okay? It doesn’t cause you any stress. Let me give you an example, I think it’ll help you understand this one better. Because John was such an excellent student in math, taking the final exam for him was like a walk in the park. Okay, so what I’m saying is because John was such an excellent student, taking the final exam was very easy for him, okay? It was simple. There was no stress. It was a walk in the park.

Okay, and I have one more for you before we start the story. This one is to “drink like a fish,” okay? To drink like a fish. So if you drink like a fish, it means you drink a lot of alcohol or you drank a lot of alcohol, I’ll say, okay? Let me give you an example. On the day that Peter got divorced, he drank like a fish.

Okay, so what I’m saying is on the day that Peter got divorced, he drank a lot of alcohol.Okay, so now I’m going to tell you a story but I’m going to ask you a lot of questions as I tell you the story.

So when I ask you a question, I want you to answer that question quickly. Just tell me the first thing that you think of when you hear the question. Okay, and don’t worry about making mistakes. Y’know, mistakes are okay as long as you learn from them.

So if you make a mistake when you’re answering one of these questions, just try not to make the same mistake the next time you hear the question, okay? Learn from the mistake. And when you answer these questions, I want you to speak loudly and confidently. Alright, well it’s time for our story then so let’s begin.
