##Hung Up – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. In this lesson, I’m going to tell you the same story three times, but each time I tell you the story I’m going to change the point of view for that story. So I want to start by telling you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is Ricky and Ricky is a lawyer. And one day after Ricky leaves work, he goes home, he takes his coat off and he puts it in the oven. He does not hang his coat in the closet. He puts it in the oven. Ricky does a lot of crazy things that day because he is hung up on a woman. He’s hung up on a woman named Kristina.

Well, Ricky is from Spain and his first language is Spanish. And Kristina is from America and her first language is English. And Kristina is unable to speak Spanish but Ricky can speak English well. Yes, Ricky knows how to speak English well, but he doesn’t have enough confidence to speak English. So Ricky has a problem. Ricky wants to talk to Kristina but he’s afraid to talk to Kristina. Ricky’s afraid to talk to Kristina because he has a hang up about speaking English.

Well, Ricky has a brother and his name is Ramon. And one day Ricky calls Ramon and he tells Ramon that he is hung up on Kristina but he’s afraid to talk to her. Well, when Ramon hears this he gets annoyed and he tells Ricky to stop acting like a little boy and just call her. And then Ramon hangs up on Ricky. He hangs up on Ricky because he’s still annoyed.

Well, that night Ricky is unable to sleep because he’s hung up on Kristina. He knows that he needs to talk to her so the next day that’s what he does. He calls Kristina and he asks her to go on a date with him at 7:00 on Friday and she says yes. Kristina agrees to go on a date with Ricky.

Well, Ricky is very excited about his date with Kristina, but unfortunately on Friday, the day of the date, there’s a problem. Ricky gets hung up. Yes, Ricky gets hung up at work and he is one hour late for his date with Kristina. Ricky arrives at Kristina’s house at 8:00, one hour late for the date. But after he arrives at the Kristina’s, just 10 seconds after he arrives, Kristina arrives. You see, Kristina is also one hour late for the date. Kristina is one hour late for the date because she also got hung up at work.

Okay, that’s the end of our first story in the lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s start.

Sometimes in the future there will be a man and his name is going to be Ricky. And Ricky is going to be a lawyer. And one day after work, after he leaves work Ricky is going to go home, he’s going to take his coat off and he’s going to put it in the oven. He isn’t going to hang up his coat. He’s going to put it in the over. You see, Ricky’s going to do a lot of crazy things that day because he’s going to be hung up on a woman named Kristina.

Well, Ricky is going to be from Spain and his first language will be Spanish. And Kristina is going to be from American and her first language is going to be English. And Kristina is going to be unable to speak Spanish but Ricky is going to know how to speak English well. Yes, he’s going to know how to speak English well, but unfortunately he isn’t going to have enough confidence to speak English.

So Ricky’s going to have a problem. He’s going to want to talk to Kristina but he’s going to be afraid to do it. Ricky’s going to be afraid to talk to Kristina because he’s going to have a hang up about speaking English.

Well, Ricky’s going to have a brother and his name is going to be Ramon. And one day Ricky’s going to call Ramon and he’s going to tell him that he is hung up on Kristina but he’s afraid to talk to her. Well, Ramon is going to hear this and he’s going to be annoyed. And he’s going to tell Ricky to stop acting like a little boy and just call Kristina. And then Ramon’s going to hang up on Ricky. He’s going to hang up on Ricky because he’s still going to be annoyed.

Well, that night Ricky is going to be unable to sleep because he’s going to be hung up on Kristina.

He’s going to know that he needs to speak to her so the next day that’s what he’s going to do.

Ricky is going to call Kristina and he’s going to ask her to go on a date with him at 7:00 on Friday. And guess what? Kristina’s going to say yes. Kristina’s going to agree to go on a date with Ricky at 7:00 on Friday.

Well, Ricky’s going to be very excited about his date with Kristina but unfortunately on Friday, the day of the date, there’s going to be a problem. Ricky’s going to get hung up. Yes, Ricky’s going to hung up at work and he’s going to be one hour late for his date with Kristina. Ricky’s going to arrive at Kristina’s house at 8:00, one hour late for the date. But just 10 seconds after he arrives, Kristina’s going to arrive. You see, Kristina is also going to be one hour late for the date. Kristina’s going to be late for the date because she will have gotten hung up at work also.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story. In that story, the story was being told as if it had happened sometime in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. In this story, you’re going to hear the story from Ricky’s point of view and the story will be told as if it’s already happened in the past. Okay, so you’re going to have to pretend I’m Ricky for this one. Let’s start the story.

Hi, I’m Ricky and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago in the past. You see, at that time I was a lawyer and one day after I left work, I went home, I took off my coat and I put it in the oven. Yes, I did not hang up my coat. I put it in the oven. I did a lot of crazy things that day because I was hung up on a woman named Kristina.

Well, I’m from Spain and my first language is Spanish. And Kristina was from America and her first language was English. And Kristina was unable to speak Spanish but I knew how to speak English well. Kristina was also late for the date because she also got hung up at work.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. That story was told from Ricky’s point of view and it was told as if the story had already happened in the past. So that brings us to the end of this point of view lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each one of these stories, I want you to just understand what’s happening. Okay, just listen to the story, try and understand what’s happening and remember the point of view that the story’s being told from. You’ll start to notice that the words change as the point of view changes. And as you listen to the stories more and more, you’ll understand how they change.
