Commit – Interactive Lesson B

Hi, this is AJ and welcome to part B of our interactive lesson. Time to use the mini story technique. I will read through the essay again, this time asking questions. Just answer with a simple word or phrase, one word or a few words that’s fine. Try to answer quickly. Remember you will listen to all audios, all the audio lessons you’ll listen to every day for at least two weeks.

So deep, deep learning. Let’s begin…

Unfortunately, most of modern adulthood is perpetually hanging out in the locker room Most of modern what?

Adulthood. Most of modern adulthood.

Most of modern adulthood is perpetually hanging out in the locker room.

So most of modern adulthood is sometimes hanging out in the locker room right?

No, not sometimes, perpetually means forever. Perpetually hanging out.

So are we perpetually hanging out in the locker room?

Yes. We are perpetually, forever, hanging out in the locker room.

Are we working out in the locker room, according to the author?

No, we’re not working out. Working out is doing exercise. We’re not working out in the locker room we are hanging out in the locker room.

So, are we talking in the locker room or are we doing exercise in the locker room?

Talking, chatting, hanging out. Modern adults, we, are hanging out in the locker room and talking, talking, forever talking.

Ultimately though, you only know who a man or woman is and what he or she believes by what he or she does, not by what he or she sits around talking about, not by what he or she says or what he or she feels. It’s only when he or she acts, when he or she does something that we start to know what he or she is. Action is character.

So, what is our true character?

Action. Our actions. Action is character.

Is action character or is action our reputation?

Action is character, our true self, who we truly are.

Is reputation who we truly are?

No, no not reputation. Reputation is what other people think we are. Character is who we truly are inside.

Adulthood is action. Some people are going to be uncomfortable with this conclusion. They’ll want to say that true adulthood comes from something else. For example, a man becomes a true man by recovering his natural wildness. This is one idea.

So one idea is that a man becomes a true man by recovering his natural domestication, right?

No, no, no, no not by recovering, not by getting back his natural domestication; no the opposite, recovering his natural wildness.

Is a dog a domesticated animal?

Yes, that’s right a dog is a domesticated animal, a lion is a wild animal.

So a man becomes a true man by recovering his natural what?

Wildness.

Or a man becomes a true man after he finds healing for his soul. Or a man becomes a true man when he starts to resist becoming over domesticated.

So a man becomes a true man when he starts to accept being over domesticated, is that right?

No, no, no, no not when he starts to accept being over domesticated, the opposite, when he fights against it. When he resists being over domesticated. Too much-over- too much domesticated. Too much safe. Too much civilized. Over domesticated.

So he becomes a true man when he starts to resist being under domesticated or resists being over domesticated?

Resist being over domesticated. Too civilized, too safe.

The great mistake we have made in our generation is to think we can make a man with words.

We need words certainly, we just don’t need words only. Yet, by making words our primary tool in building men, we have talked the modern man to death.

Have we entertained the modern man with words?

No, we have not entertained the modern man with words.

What have we done, we have talked to the modern man what?

To death. We’ve talked the modern man to death.

This phrase, using something to death, means something that’s too much. For example, you can say, oh my God she talked me to death. It means she talked and talked until you felt like dying or like you wanted to die because you were so bored. You were talked to death. We can also say, exaggerating again, we can say, oh my job is working me to death. My job is working me to death. They’re making me work too much. It makes me feel like I’m going to die. You’re not really going to die, it’s just exaggerating it meaning it’s too much.

So, we have been talked what?

We have been talked to death, too much talking.

The modern man is awash in a sea of words.

He is awash in a sea of what?

A sea of words. He is covered, he is surrounded by words always. He is awash in a sea of words.

Who is awash in a sea of words?

Modern man, meaning modern humans, modern humans, the modern man, the modern person is awash in a sea of words. Is constantly surrounded by words.

The modern person has language for things he hasn’t even thought about doing. For example, labels from a dozen therapeutic systems.

The modern man knows labels or ideas from how many therapeutic systems?

A dozen, from a dozen therapeutic system. Just an example, it might be more than a dozen or less than a dozen, but just for example, a dozen.

A dozen means 10 right?

No, no, no a dozen does not mean 10.

How many is a dozen?

Twelve. A dozen equals 12. In America we sell eggs, for example, at the grocery store. We buy and sell eggs in a dozen, 12 at a time.

A dozen therapeutic systems, what kind of systems?

Therapeutic systems, therapeutic meaning- good for your psychology, good for your emotions.

Healing for your mind. Healing for your emotions. Therapeutic… So how many therapeutic systems?

A dozen or 12. A dozen therapeutic systems.

Modern humans know lists and descriptions and nifty slogans to keep inspired, to stay inspired.

Bad slogans or nifty slogans?

Nifty slogans. Nifty – means nice or clever. Nifty slogans. It’s kind of an old word.

Fine, but has it made him a man or a woman? Has it made him act in noble ways?

What kind of ways?

Noble ways.

Noble means dishonorable, right?

No, no, no, no the opposite. Noble means honorable, good and truthful and just. Noble.

Dishonorable is the opposite.

So he asks, has it made him – has it made you, has it made me – act in noble ways?

He answers, not usually. I think it has bored him to death.

What has bored modern men and women to death? What has bored him to death?

Words, too many words has bored him to death.

Too many words has bored him to what?

To death, meaning too, too, too much.

So we say oh, I’m bored to death. That means I’m super, super, super bored.

So what has bored us to death as modern humans? What is boring us to death?

Words. Too much talk. Too much gossip. Too many words. It’s boring us to death.

Or worse it has made him – modern humans, modern man – it has made him feel like a victim or worse than that it has made him feel understood, as though being understood is the meaning of life.

Is the writer saying, being understood is the meaning of life, yes or no it’s not?

It’s not. The writer is saying it’s not the meaning of life, as though if being understood is the meaning of life. As though, as if, being understood is the meaning of life. So he’s implying he’s not directly saying it, but he’s implying. Implying means to suggest. He’s suggesting that being understood by other people is not the meaning of life, it’s not.

Here’s the question… when does he start the doing? When does he act? I think the more talk the less action.

So the more we talk the less we what?

Act. The more we talk the less we act.

I think the more drama the less adulthood.

So here in this sentence drama means like a movie, right?

No, no, no, no, no. That’s one meaning of drama, but here drama means gossip.

So what does drama mean in this sentence?

Gossip. I think the more drama the more gossip, the more emotional gossip; it really is like emotional gossip… arguing, gossiping, all that kind of stuff.

So the more drama we have, the more gossip we have in our life the less what?

The less adulthood, the less we are adults.

So does gossip make us more adults or less adults?

Less. Drama/gossip makes us less adults.

I also believe that the more talk, the more we talk, the more complex and unattainable adulthood starts to seem.

So, more talking makes adulthood seem simpler or more complex?

More complex. More talk makes adulthood, being an adult, a good adult, seem more complex, more difficult.

So it makes it seem more complex or more simple?

More complex.

And easier to attain, easier to do?

No, no, no, no more unattainable, unattainable, not achievable, not doable.

So, talking and talking and talking too much makes adulthood seem achievable or unattainable?

Unattainable, cannot be attained, cannot be achieved, cannot be done.

Especially, particularly (same meaning) since the average man doesn’t need that many words to begin with, on any subject.

So, according to the writer and to me too, do you need a lot of words to talk about any subject?

No, not really. You do not need so many words. You can talk about any subject with a common simple vocabulary.

Hear me, he says, true adults do things.

So true adults talk or what?

They do things. True adults do things they don’t just talk.

Mere humans, only humans who are not adults yet, who want to seem like adults just talk.

So people who are not really adults, do they talk or do they act?

They just talk.

People who are not really adults. They seem like adults. They look like adults, but not really they’re not really adults. What do they do?

They just talk. They only talk.

Adulthood is in the doing.

All right, that is the end of part B. Listen to it every day. Shout out your answers powerfully, with a loud voice when you can, when you’re alone. Try to answer quickly, but most of all listen and repeat, listen and repeat every audio. Interactive A, interactive B, the commentary and the main lesson. Listen to each one every day. Repetition, deep learning that’s how you become a master, by doing.

See you in the commentary.
