Ex-Con – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in today’s lesson I’m going to tell you the same story that I told you in the mini-story lesson. But this time I’m going to tell you that story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a fox and his name is Brian and Brian is a cook. And Brian has a girlfriend and her name is Shannon. And Shannon is a schoolteacher. Well, one day Brian wants to cook breakfast for Shannon. But Brian does not have any eggs and Brian is unable to buy eggs because he doesn’t have any money. So Brian steals 7 eggs from a chicken named Clara.

Well, Brian thinks he has gotten away with stealing the eggs but Brian does not know that after he steals the eggs, Clara calls the police. And the police go to Brian’s home and they bust Brian for stealing the eggs. And then Brian goes to jail.

Well, when Brian is in jail he calls Shannon every day. But Shannon does not want to date an ex-con. No, she doesn’t. And Shannon thinks that Brian might steal again after he gets out of jail. So Shannon refuses to speak with Brian when he’s in jail.

Well, Brian is in jail for two years and when he gets out of jail he turns his life around. Brian gives up eating eggs and he volunteers at a home for abused chickens. And Brian goes to schools and he teaches children that stealing is wrong.

Well, one day when Brian is at a school teaching children, Shannon sees him. Shannon sees him at the school because she’s a teacher at the school. And Shannon realizes that Brian has turned his life around so she asks Brian to be her boyfriend again. And Brian happily says yes because he is still in love with Shannon.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first point of view story. In that story, I told you the story as if it was happening in the present, right now. Next I want to tell you the story as if it will happen in the future. So let’s start.

41 years from now in the future, there will be a fox and his name is going to be Brian. And Brian’s going to be a cook. And Brian’s going to have a girlfriend and her name will be Shannon. And Shannon is going to be a schoolteacher. Well, one day Brian is going to want to cook breakfast for Shannon but he isn’t going to have any eggs. And Brian will be unable to buy eggs because

he isn’t going to have any money. So Brian is going to steal 7 eggs from a cow named Clara, from a chicken named Clara, excuse me. Brian’s going to steal 7 eggs from a chicken named Clara.

Well, Brian is going to think that he has gotten away with stealing the eggs. But Clara is going to call the police after Brian steals the eggs and the police are going to go to Brian’s house and they’re going to bust Brian for stealing the eggs. And then Brian’s going to go to jail.

Well, when Brian is in jail he’s going to call Shannon every day. But Shannon isn’t going to want to date an ex-con and she’s going to think that Brian will steal again after he gets out of jail. So Shannon is going to refuse to speak to Brian when he’s in jail.

Well, Brian’s going to be in jail for two years and then he’s going to get out of jail. And after he gets out of jail, Brian is going to turn his life around. Brian’s going to quit, excuse me, Brian’s going to give up eating eggs and Brian’s going to volunteer at a home for abused chickens. And Brian’s going to go to schools and he’s going to teach children that stealing is wrong.

Well, one day when Brian is teaching children, Shannon’s going to see him. And Shannon’s going to see him at the school because she’s going to be a teacher at that school. And Shannon’s going to realize that Brian has turned his life around so she’s going to ask Brian to be her boyfriend again. And Brian’s going to happily say yes because he will still be in love with Shannon.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it will happen in the future. So we have one more story in this lesson. In this next point of view story, I’m going to tell you the story from Brian’s point of view. And I’m going to tell the story as if it has already happened in the past. So let’s start the story.

Hello, I’m a fox and my name’s Brian and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was a cook and I had a girlfriend and her name was Shannon. And Shannon was a school teacher. Well, one day I wanted to cook breakfast for Shannon but I didn’t have any eggs. And I was unable to buy eggs because I didn’t have any money, so I stole 7 eggs from a chicken named Clara.

Well, I thought I had gotten away with stealing the eggs but I did not know that after I stole the eggs, Clara called the police. And the police went to my house and they busted me for stealing the eggs. And after that, I went to jail.

Well, when I was in jail, I called Shannon every day but Shannon didn’t want to date an ex-con. You see, Shannon thought that I might steal again after I got out of jail so she refused to speak to me when I was in jail.

Well, I was in jail for two years and after I got out of jail, I turned my life around. I gave up eating eggs and I volunteered at a home for abused chickens. And I went to schools and I taught children that stealing was wrong.

Well, one day when I was at a school teaching children that stealing was wrong, Shannon saw me. See, Shannon saw me at the school because she was a teacher at that same school. And Shannon realized that I had turned my life around so she asked me to be her boyfriend again. And I happily said yes because I was still in love with Shannon.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. In that story, I told you the story from Brian’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So that means we’ve come to the end of this point of view lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each one of these point of view stories, I want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from and I just want you to try and understand what’s happening in the story.
