Bill Is Blue - Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story from three different points of view. First, I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a monkey and his name is Bill. And unfortunately, Bill is blue. Bill is blue because his dog has died. And after Bill’s dog dies he does not leave home for two years. Well, even though Bill does not leave home for two years, he always has plenty of food to eat.

You see, Bill is lucky because there’s a banana tree in front of his house so Bill always has plenty of bananas to eat. In fact, for two years Bill eats nothing but bananas. But even though Bill has bananas and plenty of them, one thing he does not have is toothpaste. Bill does not have any toothpaste because he has not gone to the store to buy toothpaste for two years.

Well, Bill has a problem. His teeth are very dirty. In fact, his teeth are so dirty that they are black. Bill has black teeth. Bill’s teeth are very dirty because he has not brushed his teeth for 19 months. Bill has not brushed his teeth for 19 months because he doesn’t have any toothpaste.

Well, Bill has not gone to the dentist for three years. And he needs to go to the dentist. He needs to go to the dentist because his teeth are black and they’re very dirty. But even though Bill knows he needs to go to the dentist, he puts off going to the dentist. Bill puts off going to the dentist because he’s blue so he doesn’t want to leave home.

Well, one day Bill is eating a banana and seven of his teeth fall out of his mouth. Yes, that’s right, seven of Bill’s teeth fall out of his mouth. So Bill has to go to the dentist and that’s what he does. He goes to the dentist. And when Bill arrives at the dentist’s office, there are five puppies there and one of the puppies jumps on Bill and licks his face. And when the puppy licks Bill’s face, Bill’s eyes light up.

Well, the dentist tells Bill that each of the puppies needs a new home. So that day when Bill leaves the dentist’s office, not only does he have seven new teeth, he also has a new puppy. And after Bill leaves the dentist’s office he is not blue anymore.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first story. In that story, I told you the story as if it was happening in the present, right now. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen sometime in the future. So let’s start.

Many years from now in the future, there will be a monkey and his name is going to be Bill. And unfortunately, Bill is going to be blue. Bill is going to be blue because his dog will have died. And after Bill’s dog dies, Bill isn’t going to leave home for two years. Well, even though Bill is not going to leave home for two years, he’s always going to have plenty of food to eat.

You see, there will be a banana tree in front of Bill’s house so Bill is always going to have plenty of bananas to eat. In fact, for two years Bill is going to eat nothing but bananas. But even though Bill will have plenty of bananas to eat, he isn’t going to have any toothpaste. Yes, Bill isn’t going to have any toothpaste because he will not have gone to the store to buy toothpaste for two years.

Well, Bill is going to have a problem. His teeth are going to be very dirty. In fact, they’re going to be so dirty that they’re going to be black. And Bill’s teeth are going to be dirty because he will not have brushed his teeth for 19 months. Bill will not have brushed his teeth for 19 months because he isn’t going to have any toothpaste.

Well, Bill will not have gone to the dentist for three years and he’s going to need to go to the dentist because his teeth are going to be very dirty. And Bill is going to know that he needs to go to the dentist but he’s not going to go. He’s going to put off going to the dentist. Bill will put off going to the dentist because he’s going to be blue so he isn’t going to want to leave home.

Well, I have something else to tell you about Bill. One day Bill is going to be eating a banana and seven of his teeth are going to fall out of his mouth so Bill will have to go to the dentist and that’s what he’s going to do. He’s going to go to the dentist. And Bill’s going to go to the dentist and there will be five puppies in the dentist’s office. That’s right, five puppies. And one of the puppies is going to jump on Bill and lick his face and when the puppy lick’s Bill’s face, Bill’s eyes are going to light up.

Well, the dentist is going to tell Bill that each of the puppies needs a new home. So that day when Bill leaves the dentist’s office, not only will he have seven new teeth, he’s also going to have a new puppy. And after Bill leaves the dentist’s office that day, he will not be blue anymore.

Okay, so that completes our second point of view story. Now that story was told as if it’s going to happen many years in the future. Okay, so I have one more story for you in this lesson. Now in this point of view story, you’re going to hear the story from Bill’s point of view and the story will be told as if it’s already happened in the past. So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a monkey named Bill for this one, okay? I’ll do my best to convince you. Okay, let’s start the story.

Hello, my name is Bill and I’m a monkey and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me many years ago. You see, at that time I was blue. I was blue because my dog had died. And after my dog died I did not leave home for two years. Well, even though I didn’t leave home for two years, I always had plenty of food to eat.

You see, there was a banana tree in front of my house so I always had plenty of bananas to eat. In fact, for two years I ate nothing but bananas. But even though I had plenty of bananas to eat, I didn’t have any toothpaste. I didn’t have any toothpaste because I didn’t go to the store to buy toothpaste for two years.

Well, I had a problem. My teeth were very dirty. In fact, they were so dirty that they were black. My teeth were very dirty because I had not brushed my teeth for 19 months. I had not brushed my teeth for 19 months because I didn’t have any toothpaste.

Well, I had not gone to the dentist for three years and I needed to go. I needed to go to the dentist because my teeth were very dirty. And I knew that I needed to go to the dentist but I put off going to the dentist. I put off going to the dentist because at that time I was blue so I didn’t want to leave home.

Well, one day I was eating a banana and seven of my teeth fell out of my mouth, yes. So I had to go to the dentist and that’s what I did. I went to the dentist. And when I arrived at the dentist’s office, there were five puppies there. Yes, there were five puppies in the dentist’s office. And one of the puppies jumped on me and he licked my face. And when the puppy licked my face, my eyes lit up.

Well, the dentist told me that each of the puppies needed a new home. So that day when I left the dentist’s office, not only did I have seven new teeth, I also had a new puppy. And after I left the dentist’s office, I wasn’t blue anymore.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. Now that story was told as if Bill was telling you the story and the story was taking place in the past, okay? The story had already happened. So that brings us to the end of this point of view lesson and I wanted to tell you that I would like you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each one of these stories, I just want you to understand what’s happening in the story. And I want you to remember when the story is taking place, okay? What point of view is the story being told from? And also remember who’s telling the story. Y’know, maybe Bill’s telling the story. And just listen to each one of these stories and, y’know, just try and understand what’s happening and you’ll see that the words in the story change because the grammar actually changes.

But I don’t want you to think about the grammar changing. I just want you to listen to the stories and understand what’s happening, okay? This is a really powerful way for you to learn grammar without having to actually memorize any grammar rules.

Okay, well that’s the end of this point of view story, excuse me…that’s the end of this point of view lesson and I’ll see you next time.
