The Boxer – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times, but each time I tell you that story, I’m going to change the point of view. So first, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a kangaroo and his name is Peter. And Peter is a boxer and many people look up to Peter. Yes, many people look up to Peter because he wins a gold medal at the Olympics.

Well, Peter has a son and his name is Jimmy and Peter wants Jimmy to follow in his footsteps. Well, Jimmy does not want to be a boxer but he doesn’t want to let his father down. So Jimmy trains to become a boxer.

Well, while Jimmy is training to become a boxer, he works very hard. He is not lazy. For example, every day Jimmy wakes up at the crack of dawn and he runs 27 miles, yes. And then, he goes to the gym for 11 hours. He does this every day.

Well, Jimmy has a girlfriend and her name is Rebecca. And on the day before Jimmy’s first fight, Jimmy tells Rebecca that he does not want to be a boxer and he tells her that the only reason he is training to be a boxer is because he wants his father to be proud of him and he does not want to let him down.

Well, Rebecca tells Jimmy that he needs to level with his father. And Jimmy knows that Rebecca is right so he agrees to speak to his father before the fight. Well, the next day, before the fight, Jimmy talks to his father and he tells his father that he wants his father to be proud of him and he does not want to let his father down, but he does not want to be a boxer.

Well, Peter tells Jimmy that it’s fine if he doesn’t want to be a boxer. And he tells him that he will be proud of him no matter what he does in life. So Jimmy is very happy that he has finally leveled with his father.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. Now, in that story, I was telling you the story as if it was happening right now in the present. So next, I want to change the point of view. I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen sometime in the future, let’s say 59 years from now in the future. Okay, so let’s start the story.

59 years from now in the future there will be a kangaroo and his name is going to be Peter. And Peter is going to be a boxer, yes. Peter’s going to be a boxer and many people are going to look up to Peter. You see, many people are going to look up to Peter because Peter will have won a gold medal at the Olympics.

Well, Peter’s going to have a son and his name is going to be Jimmy and Peter is going to want Jimmy to follow in his footsteps. Well, Jimmy is not going to want to be a boxer but he isn’t going to want to let his father down so Jimmy is going to train to become a boxer.

Well, while Jimmy is training to become a boxer, he is going to work very hard. He is not going to be lazy. For example, every day Jimmy is going to wake up at the crack of dawn and then he is going to run 27 miles. And after that, he’s going to go to the gym for 11 hours. He’s going to do this every day.

Well, Jimmy is going to have a girlfriend, yes. He’s going to have a girlfriend and her name will be Rebecca. And on the day before Jimmy’s first fight, he’s going to tell Rebecca that he does not want to be a boxer. And he’s going to tell her that the only reason he is training to be a boxer is because he wants his father to be proud of him and he does not want to let his father down.

Well, Rebecca is going to tell Jimmy that he needs to level with his father. And Jimmy’s going to know that Rebecca is right so Jimmy is going to agree to speak to his father before the fight. Well, the next day, before the fight, Jimmy is going to talk to his father and he’s going to tell his father that he wants his father to be proud of him and he does not want to let his father down, but he does not want to be a boxer.

Well, Peter is going to tell Jimmy that it’s okay if he doesn’t want to be a boxer and that he will be proud of his son no matter what he does in life. So Jimmy is going to be happy that he has finally leveled with his father.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it will happen in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. Now this time, I’m going to tell you the story from Jimmy’s point of view, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a kangaroo named Jimmy for this story. Alright, let’s start the story then.

Hello, my name is Jimmy and I’m a kangaroo. And I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago in the past. But I want to start this story by telling you a little bit about my father. My father was named Peter. He’s not with us anymore. He died, so I will speak about him in the past. My father’s name was Peter and, of course, he was a kangaroo also. And he was a boxer and many people looked up to my father. Yes, many people looked up to my father because my father won a gold medal at the Olympics.

Well, as you know, my father had a son, me. And he wanted me to follow in his footsteps. Well, I did not want to be a boxer, but I did not want to let my father down so I trained to become a boxer. And while I was training to become a boxer, I worked very hard. I was not lazy. For example, every day I woke up at the crack of dawn and I ran 27 miles. And then after that, I went to the gym for 11 hours. I did this every day.

Well, at that time, I had a girlfriend and her name was Rebecca. And on the day before my first fight, I told Rebecca that I did not want to be a boxer. Yes, I told her that the only reason I was training to be a boxer was because I wanted my father to be proud of me and I did not want to let him down.

Well, Rebecca told me that I needed to level with my father. And I knew that she was right, so I agreed to speak to my father before the fight. Well, the next day, before the fight, I spoke to my father and I told him that I wanted him to be proud of me and I did not want to let him down, but I did not want to be a boxer.

Well, my father told me that it was okay if I didn’t want to be a boxer and that he would be proud of me no matter what I did in life. So I was happy that I have finally leveled with my father.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. Now, remember in that story, I was telling you the story from Jimmy’s point of view. So now that we’ve finished all three stories, that means we are at the end of this lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each one of these stories, I just want you to relax and try to understand what’s happening in the story, okay?

And, of course, I want you to remember the point of view that the story’s being told from. This is a great way to learn grammar, okay? Because you hear how the words change as the point of view changes. But I don’t want you to memorize how these words change. I just want you to relax and try and understand what’s happening in the story. And as you listen to these stories many times, you’ll start to understand how the words in the story change.

Alright, well that’s all for this point of view lesson so I’ll see you next time.
