Assertiveness - VIP POV Story

Hi this is AJ, welcome to the point-of-view stories for the VIP lesson set this month. So same story, we’re just going to tell it with different versions, different points of view, starting with the present, as usual. Let’s go.

Hiva is a dog. He lives a hectic life in New York City and he has a type-A personality. He is also a workaholic and he’s an aggressive go-getter. Now, Hiva’s girlfriend, Laura the dog, is exactly the opposite. She’s very mellow. She loves to chill out at home and relax.

She loves to hang out with friends. Because they’re opposite, they constantly argue.

Hiva is always wired and stressed and this makes Laura feel anxious.

Well, to solve the problem first they try to go on vacation. They go to Bali and it’s very tranquil, very peaceful in Bali. Unfortunately, when they return to New York City Hiva quickly becomes wired again.

Next, Hiva tries yoga classes, but after the class again Hiva quickly becomes wired.

Well, finally, they decide to move to Thailand and, in Thailand, Hiva learns how to chill out and relax. As they say in Thailand, “mai pen ray”

Okay, that’s the first version. Next version,, on to the next one. So, this one is in the future. We just imagine we’re dreaming about this. It’s going to happen in the future.

So in the future there will be a dog and his name will be Hiva. He’s gonna live a hectic life in New York City and he’s gonna have a type-A personality. (‘Gonna’ means going to, we use it in casual speech for the future.) He’s also gonna be a workaholic and he’ll be an aggressive go-getter.

So imagine I’m telling you this story like for a movie. That I’m suggesting this as a movie story, all right? So I’m talking about the future.

So in the future, Hiva will also have a girlfriend. His girlfriend will be named Laura, Laura the dog. She’ll be just the opposite of Hiva. She’ll be mellow and relaxed. She’ll love to chill out at home and she’ll love to hang out with friends. That’s all. Because they’re total opposites, they’re going to constantly argue. Hiva, he’ll always be wired and stressed.

Laura, she’ll always feel anxious.

Finally, they’ll decide to try to solve this problem. They realize that they need to help Hiva relax, so first they’ll go to Bali on vacation. And, of course, it will be very tranquil and peaceful in Bali and Hiva will relax when he’s there, but when he returns to New York City Hiva will quickly become wired again.

Next, he’s gonna try yoga. He’ll try taking yoga classes. He’s gonna take yoga, but the problem is after the class he’ll quickly become wired, hectic, energized again. So that won’t work either. That will not work. It won’t work. Finally, they’ll decide to move to Thailand. Hiva’ll learn to chill out finally in Thailand.

(That one was hard to hear probably. It’s a little difficult to say even. Hiva’ll, Hiva’ll learn to chill out. If I’m speaking very quickly you probably can’t even hear that, but that’s how we could say it in a very short and fast way. Hiva’ll, Hiva’ll learn to chill out. There’s a little slight ‘ll’ ‘L’ sound at the end of that or you can just say Hiva will learn to chill out.)

Okay, that’s the end of the future version. Version number three.

Since he was a teenager, this dog lives a long time, by the way. Since he was a teenager, Hiva has lived in New York City. He has lived a hectic life in New York City for a long time. Now, all of his life he has had a type-A personality. Most of his life he has been a workaholic. Most of his life, certainly all of his adult life, he has been an aggressive go-getter.

Now, Laura, it’s a similar situation. She has always been mellow. Since she was a baby she has been mellow. She has been mellow, relaxed, yeah. And she has always loved to just chill out at home and she has loved to hang out with her friends. She has always loved doing these things. She has always loved doing these things. She has always been a very calm, relaxed, mellow person.

Well, of course, because they’re opposites, ever since they started to date Hiva and Laura have constantly argued. They have constantly argued with each other. Hiva has usually been wired and stressed and usually this has made Laura feel anxious. Well, finally they decide to find a solution.

First, they go on a vacation to Bali and in Bali it’s very tranquil, very peaceful, but the problem is they return to New York City and Hiva quickly becomes wired again, stressed again. So next he decides to try yoga. He takes yoga classes and he does relax during the yoga, but after the yoga class he quickly becomes wired, too energized again.

Finally, they decide to move to Thailand and there in Thailand Hiva finally learns to just chill out and relax. And their relationship improves and they have a great life.

That is the end of our point-of-view stories. You’ll notice in the third one it usually changes at some point because we’re talking about things that happened for a while and then suddenly we start talking about specific things and when that happens we have to change a little bit.

Don’t think about the grammar rules, please. Just notice how it changes, get used to it.

Listen to this every day for seven days, 10 days or more. You will get used to the grammar, I promise you. Just relax and be patient.

Okay, I will see you next time.

Have a great day, great week and a great month. Bye-bye.
